    Default allergic to Bare Minerals

Hi guys, I just ordered this product and received it last week. I used it over the weekend and when I used it my face would itch very badly. I used it two nights in a row because I wanted to make sure it wasn't another type of allergic reaction. I was using Lancome before which is hypoallergenic and dermatologist tested. I was happy with Lancome but just wanted to try something different and the Bare Minerals looks beautiful on the girls at work. But I suppose it just wasn't for me. I looked it up online and read that mica was in in it and some people are allergic to that mineral. Has anyone else had this problem at all?

There are some brands of minerals that do not contain Mica. I can't remember them offhand, but they are also not glossy like bare minerals is.

It's not the mica. You're allergic to bismuth oxychloride (or its derivative) in it. It' quite a common reaction, actually. The bismuth helps the mica adhere to the skin and also gives it the "shimmery" effect.

Try aromaleigh's products, as they conatin no bismuth.

Mineral makeup isn't for everyone. I've found that people with dry skin often don't like it very much, because it's a dry product, and if you have dry skin with flakes, it doesn not look very good. OTOH, it's great for those with oily skin.

Either way, I avoid mineral makeup with bismuth. I've found people develop allergies to it over time.

BTW, if you're allergic to mica, you would not be able to use powdered makeup product like eyeshadow or blush- most of the contain mica for the color. Same goes for a lot of lipsticks.

I had been using Lancome products before I tryed Bare Minerals, which I am going back to using. I never had that problem with their eye shadows, blushes or lipsticks. Who knows, like other's suggested, maybe it's another substance in the product that caused the allergy.

kitten kat is right its the bismuth oxychloride, its really irritating to some people. try www.aromaleigh.com , i love it and its cheaper then most. they also have a type of foundation that is made with silica to make it more soothing for dry or sensitve skin.

Thanks for putting up the link. I always forget! GAH!

I avoid any mineral makeup with bismuth. I don't care for the shimmery effect is gives, either- I like my foundation matte. If I want shimmers, I'll add them, but I don't want de facto shimmers.

I have also used Jane Iredale and Everyday Minerals. Jane Iredale was fine, but expensive and limited in the color range. Everyday Minerals is amazing- and they will send you free samples. You just pay, like, 4 dollars S & H. The full size jars are amazingly cheap as well. They give you enough for a few weeks' worth of use. Remember that with products that DON'T have Bismuth in them, you DON'T have to buff. It makes it so much easier. Also, if you have dry skin (like me) It can be helpful to spritz water or toner on after you have applied everything except mascara. It helps to set the makeup and also helps to keep your face hydrated. Oh! Another thing that is very cool is you can get more moisture and (if you want) more coverage by mixing the minerals with moisturizer to make a liquid foundation or by applying with a wet sponge or over a damp face. There are a lot of options- do some research!

    Good luck!

    BB

Oh yeah, I use a moisturizer. Usually, if I am using minerals, I will actually apply two layers!

Sirona, Have you only tried Bare Minerals and Drug store brands, or have you tried others? There should only be 4 ingredients in a good mineral makeup: Mica, Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide and Iron Oxide. There is one GOOD brand to use if you are super- sensitive and dry and that's Aromaleigh. I didn't mention it because it was already mentioned, but their Voile formula goes on super-smooth and is excellent for dry, sensitive skin, because the pigment is coated in silica which is smoothing. It can be found here:http://www.aromaleigh.com/arvmifopo.html

I alternate between Everyday Minerals and AromaLeigh.
