    Default Ideal waist-to-hip ratio

    Waist-to-hip ratio

Scientists have discovered that the waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is a significant factor in judging female attractiveness. Women with a 0.7 WHR (waist circumference that is 70% of the hip circumference) are invariably rated as more attractive by men, regardless of their culture. Such diverse beauty icons as Marilyn Monroe, Twiggy, Sophia Loren, Kate Moss, and the Venus de Milo all have ratios around 0.7. The ratio signals fertility—as they age, women's waists thicken as their fertility declines.

I measured my waist and hips and calculated my ratio. It's .72. Apparently, I'm thick and unattractive! Calculate yours and post. I really don't believe most of this "scientific" research on attractiveness. Ana Kournikova (picture) has a large WHR and every man I know thinks she's the hottest woman ever.

waist measurement / hip measurement = WHR

EDIT: A WHR of 0.8 or less is considered "healthy." Of course, other factors are involved in the condition of our health.

I've heard about this as well...not good @ calcs. tho. My hips are like 36, my waist is big, like a 27 or something. But, I do have a long torso (was entirely measured, in dress making class so I'm pretty prooprtionate otherwise) which makes me look a lil' more curvy.

That's hardly the conclusion that can be drawn. It's just demonstrating that men are drawn to women that have a ratio closer to .7 than further from it.

I really don't believe most of this "scientific" research on attractiveness
Beauty is not subjective; it really is scientific. Symmetry, .7 ratio, scale of femininity, etc.--all these things are very real even though we don't think about them when evaluating people.

And I, for one, don't find Anna K all that hot.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

We will disagree on this point. From the same wikipedia.com link:

    Prototypicality as beauty

Besides biology and culture, there are other factors determining physical attractiveness. The more familiar a face seems, the more highly it is judged, an example of the mere exposure effect... This reveals an "underlying preference for the familiar and safe over the unfamiliar and potentially dangerous" (Berscheid and Reis, 199.

I can't help but think that a part of us is conditioned to like what we like, and saying that our preferences are calculated purely from our DNA is indeed dangerous. Do fat, asymmetrical people have a shot at finding mates? Also, we constantly and implicitly are told what is attractive, that figure of a lobotomized Aphrodite we see in magazines, which I think, is the most dangerous. Insightful Video Clip

This thread was not started to debate what is beautiful in a woman. I am genuinely curious about the ratios of other women, especially women of SW as they probably are more fit than average Jane Doe. I have an incredibly small waist. 22 inches. Now, if I do not have a 0.7 ratio, I wonder how many women do, or even if it is attainable.

If 0.7 is not attainable, why have it? Why say the closer our ratios are to 0.7, the more attractive our bodies are? Isn't this setting us up for failure? Why not say 0.75 is attractive, if most who are interested in looking at women find 0.75 attractive?

I have often thought about how women in the US used to wear girdles & corsets, hence, they appeared to have tinier waists that they really did, thanks to laces & elastic.
As for me, all the women in my family carry extra weight on the tummy, so my waist measurement is usually bigger if I'm eating more or bloated. (In fact, in the avatar pic, I'm sucking in my stomach LOL) I did the calculation & I squeaked by, but I don't care. I like my food!
I have seen too much beauty in the world to think there's One of anything. I get so excited when I see United Colors of Bennetton ads. It's so heartening as a human to see the different kinds of people on the planet.

i don't have a tape measurer, or i would do it, but i have gained some weight due to stress, so right now, i would probably be way off!! I have what I like to call birthing hips!! even when i weighed 98 pounds a few years ago when I was really going through a bad time, my hips were big, you would think that some one of that weight would be a size 1, but no, the smallest size my hips could ever fit in to was a size 5!!

Interesting information! Mine is 0.71. I'm trying to lose half an inch on my waist but I can't stop eating! If I lost half an inch on my waist then it would be 0.69. Hehe, every time I look in the mirror I suck in my stomach and wished it looked like that all the time but I love food. Oh well.

This may be off-topic and I apologize in advance, but regarding waist measurments... they say you are supposed to measure your waist at the smallest part, kinda in between the hips and rib cage thingie right? (unless I'm misinformed, in which case this post is null and void). Well my waist measures one thing but my jean size is completely different! Maybe it's just me. Are you supposed to do jean size by the hip or what?

Looks like i am think in the middle. 29/36 = .8 Oh well I still think I am gorgeous. I have been trying to shed a few pounds and I did just eat. I will try it again in the morning. hehe. Maybe my waiste is actually 28 or 27 hehehe. Wow, me and the eliptical machie really need to get cracken. I will say this. I have wide hips, and a short torso with long segs. Because of this, I dont have much room left in there for a waist so my waist has always seemed wide. if youllok at me form the side, I look very thin, then when I face you i widen out, I am like a ruler!!! Oh well. I dont care what my whr is ... i like me just the way I am ... minus 5 or 6 punds. heheh

Iam the same measurements as only the best so I guess Iam an 0.7 also. Though I have gained ten pounds recently and dont like my figure as much, though if I was 10 pounds lighter I would probably not be have this so called perfect ratio. I think Id rather lose the 10 pounds and be happier than have the perfect ratio. By the way otb we are the same height and weight also.

    23 inch waist and 33 inch hips = .69

This is supposed to be the most attractive ratio? That's funny cuz people are always telling me to eat a damn cheeseburger!

I would love to be able to be curvy. Unfortunately, when I gain weight, it's always in the tummy and I wind up having a spare tire.

I guess the grass is always greener....

I got .77 but I don't know if I measured myself right. It can make a huge difference if you move the tape measure just a little up or down.

    pff. I'm 0.76, and therefore a fat cow? I only weigh 135 and I am 5'8"!!!

I have very narrow hips, so this is probably why I always got so much more attention when I weighed a skeletal 115lbs. I thought it was too thin, but maybe for my bird like frame it's ideal?? I am trying to lose another ten pounds. So I'll measure again then I suppose.

I dont think the ratio is saying you have to be thin to fit the model (Maryln was a size 12) its saying that women with major curve from the space of the waist to the hip are more attractive compared to a straighter lined body regardless of jean size and i would agree that curves are sexy

I haven't read ALL the posts in this entry but I did want to give my

I actually took a class from THE professor who came up with the research on this topic. He's not saying that 0.7 is the ideal we all need to shoot for in order to be beautiful. He's just saying that based on hundreds of years of research on what the general male finds attractive in the female is a waist-to-hip ratio of 0.7. That doesn't mean you can't be a bigger girl and not have that ratio, like Maryiln Monroe who was a size 12 but yet still had the famed ratio. Also, the other big point is that that ratio is known to be related to less health risks. If you body is correctly propotioned, whether its small or large, it is likely that your fat is in all the correct place and you wont have serious health risks later on in life. If any of ya'll have any questions I can look for my old notes and answer any questions you might have. The class was Psychology of Sex and so we learned many other intersting things! Oh yeah, and the closer you are to 0.7 is ideal, so not to say that 0.64 or 0.74 aren't hot bods as well!

P.S. I also thought it was funny that every time I would pass him to or from class, I thought that in his head, he might be calculating my WHR. haha, I hope not!

P.P.S. You measure yourself from the smallest part of your waist, usually right around your belly button and the largest part of your hips, usually at or below the hip bone.
