Default How do you wash/moisturize your face?

I just turned 23 and while I don't have acne, the skin on my face isn't quite up to par. Some girls don't even need to wear makeup because their skin is so nice and I wonder if it has to do with how you wash your face? I really have never paid much attention-- I just use regular soap and water, but there are so many face washes, creams, masks, scrubs, exfoliaters, moisturizers, solutions, and astringents to choose from? What do you ladies use on your skin? Does it work well?

I use the Oxy pads and Clearasil line of products to wash and use Mary Kay for moisturizer.

I just switched skincare lines. I got a wild hair at the natural food store about a month ago and I'm glad I did. I'm using the Alba Hawaiian products and I love them! I think they're great for twenty-somethings who still experience occasional breakouts but are most concerned about prevention of pre-mature aging. At $8 to $15 per product, they won't break the bank either.

I now use the Pineapple Enzyme facial cleanser, Hibiscus facial toner, Aloe & Green Tea oil-free moisturizer, and Green Tea SPF 30 sunscreen during the day. At night, I still use Creme de La Mer as my moisturizer (instead of the Alba moisurizer and SPF) as well as the Khiels Creamy Avocado eye treatment both am and pm.

What will work best for you will depend on your skin type, your skin care concerns and the climate you live in. As an oiler skin type in Colorado, I can get away with using a more emolliant moisturizer like La Mer at night and not break out. However, when I go to Hawaii I pack an oil-free night time moisturizer to use or else my face will turn into a giant, greasy pimple.

I'm sure lots of people on this site will give you names of lots of awesome products, just keep in mind that it will take a bit of experimentation until you find what works best for you. I do strongly suggest that you stick with products that are meant to be used on the face. The skin on your face is different from the skin on your legs.

    Good luck!

i would recomend going to a large department store and talking to the ladies at the counter, while they're trying to upsell, they can still tell you what kind of product you need and will give you testers. This is how I found I liked a moisturizer by Lancome so much... the name escpaes me right now, sorry! But after a couple trials you'll know how you feel about it.

If I'm wearing foundation, I will take several drops of camellia/jojoba oil mix and massage that into my skin to dissolve the makeup before using a gentle enzyme foaming cleanser with a facial cloth. If I'm not, I will use my hydrating soap to do a simple wash. In the morning, I apply a light layer of antioxidant lotion to dry parts of my face as needed before my SPF 50 sunscreen. In the evening, I use either retin-a (I use this about three times a week) or a DMAE/idebenone/green tea/ antioxidant serum. In the last six months, my skin has really improved.

    The key is to:
Deep cleanse when you need to, and use gentle cleansers. Avoid soaps that has a high alkali salt content (most commerical soaps do- I only know of about 5 companies that remove the salt from the soap). If you like soap, I can give you a name and address of a woman that hand-makes wonderful soaps that are extremely gentle. I get eczema on my face, and when my skin is super-irritated, her soaps have been the only cleanser that won't irritate my skin. Avoid sodium and ammonium lauryl or laureth sulfate in foaming cleansers, as they are somewhat irritating and harsh detergents. I personally avoid most fragrances and artificial colors (D and C or FD and C colors on the label) in my skin care.
    Use sunsreen. Avoid tanning.
Use appropriate moisturizers where neccessary. Avoid moisturizers that use petroleum, mineral oil, paraffin or silicone and its derivatives (cyclometicone, or anything with -methicone). It's fine for foundations and makeup, but when silicone based ingredients are in a moisturizer, they are there to strictly increase the skin feel and texture of the creme/lotion. On the other hand, if the lotion conatins beneficial ingredients, it will hamper the absorbtion of the ingredients and water into the skin. Silicone products can be very good in makeup because they help the makeup adhere to the skin and stay on top of the skin instead of getting absorbed or disappearing. You'll see that a lot of the "wear-proof" makeup like Revlon's Colorstay are silicone based.

Cetaphil is a great cleanser that won't dry out your skin or aggravate pimples.
You can buy it at almost any chemist/drug store/health store.

I mix a couple drops of Rosemary essential oil into it - smells great and is goo0d for your skin too

Cold-pressed jojoba oil is a fantastic alternative to moisturiser, and doesn't have any nasty chemicals that could make your spots worse. You can get this at any health store.
Don't worry about putting oil on your face - you only need a tiny bit (less than a teaspoon) and it'll penetrate your skin pretty quickly. Best to wait at least 15 mins before applying makeup though.

Gentle skin care is definitely the way to go

The Body Shop's Tea Tree Oil Facial Wash.

I love the entire Tea Tree Oil line. I get a blemish maybe once every six months!

Can someone please explain putting oils on your face to me. Is it used instead of moisturizer, or under it? What kinds are used for what skin types? Will it mess up my sheets if I put it on at night? If used instead of moisturizer, how is it better?
Ps: I second cetaphil. It's the best.

Some people use it as a moisturizer. Some lines, like Clarins, have essential oil blends designed for certain skin types (even oily) that are used under moisturizers.

I started using light oils on my face (almond & apricot kernel) and it's so great. I can feel my skin plumping up with moisture. I also use Seven Wonders oil which is a blend and has a wonderful pineapple-fruity smell. Make sure to keep a clean pillowcase & tied-back hair or you'll break out from dirt rubbing into you face while you sleep.

No soap unless my face is filthy or broken out. (Pears Glycerin or Dove.)

I dont think Cetaphil removes any makeup (not for me anyways) I use baby soap on a gentle buff puff. First I use Albone to remove makeup. (its like vasaline)

I also use Cetaphil. I use it in the am and pm and will use a little eye makeup remover if i need it to get the black crap out from under my eyes. Then I use either Aveda lotion for sensitive skin on my face or Chanel Prescision if I'm really really dry.

No brakouts to speak of, just the occasional PMS pimple.

I use Clean & Clear. They have a cleanser with Salicylic Acid (I still have pimples) that remove makeup and is gentle enough to use over your eyes too. I also use the medicated Apricot Scrub with Salycylic Acid (it makes my skin so soft!) when I haven't been wearing makeup.

To moisturize, Clean & Clear's Oil Free moisturizer (got it at the dollar store). I have oily skin, but it's very light and soft (I occasionally use it on my hands). I can even use it before putting on makeup and my face still won't feel heavy.

^ The dollar store & places like BigLots! and Ross Outlet are great places to find new kinds of skin products without spending a lot to try something.
One of the best things I ever heard is that French women traditionally do not use water on their faces- too drying. They use cold cream, things like that. In fact, some of the best skincare & makeup products come out of France.
I also love Origins products, but they're expensive.

Using oils on your face is fantastic, i swear by it!

Only use good quality essential oils and carrier oils - don't use baby oil or mineral oils though, as they'll make you break out.
You can get cold-pressed oils at health stores, and the basics aren't expensive at all.

Carrier oils like Jojoba, Apricot kernel, Sweet almond, Rosehip, Wheatgerm are all perfect for your face (and hair, and body). Even if you have oily skin, Jojoba is perfect, as it is so similar to sebum (skin's natural oil) and won't upset the ph balance of your skin.

The best part is that there are no nasty chemicals, and if you add a couple drops of essentail oil (1 dop per 15mls carrier oil) then not only will it smell great but it's also beneficial, depending on the oil you use.

Rose, Sandalwood, Palmarosa, Rosemary, Lavendar - they're all excellent for skin and hair.
Sorry about the long post, but i'm obsessed with natural skincare. If anyone wants any tips, i'm happy to help.
