    Default Depo problems

I have been on the depo shot for like 7 or 8 years. Sone if the girls at my club, also on depo for a long time, was having problems the other day. She was lactating like she was pregnate. She went to the doc and got some pill to dry her up. ALso, the nurse told me it can lead to osteoperosis. I have heard of a lot of problems. One of my biggest concerns with it is decreased libido. I know it is one of the side effects but it causes problems with my relationship. My hubby thinks it has nothing to do with the shot, just that the newness of the relationship has worn off after 4 years. I had the same problem with my last bf though. I NEVER want to have sex. It is also VERY difficult to achieve orgasm. I have tried mastubating but I cant even get my self wet let alone come. Has anyone else ever had this stuff? I am going to make an appointment with a gyno tommarow but I am scared. The last time I went to the doc, for constipation, he seriously made me feel violated. I left the office in tears. I know that sounds stupid but it just felt wrong. I am going to try and find a woman doc because i think a woman will understand my sex problems better than a man. Some of my gf's think that my head is getting in the way and I htink too much when having sex so I dont enjoy it as much as I should. I have tried everything, masturbation, toys, intercourse, girl on girl, oral sex for long periods of time, anal,,, nothing seems to do it for me. I have always been like this except when my relationship was new I had somewhat of a sex drive, but the actuall sex was always the same. If I do feel like i am getting close to orgasim, it just seems to go away. Its like there is build up and no release.
Is there something wrong with my kitty? DO you think it is broken?

I was on Depo for almost two years. I gained weight, I had no sex drive, I never had a period and I was seriously depressed. Depo can do things to your body that just arnt right. It makes your body think its pregnate(hence the girl lactating). The recomended thing is spend a year or two on it and a year off to let it get out of your system. Also I have heard that it can make you infertal. I would get off it, spend a year or so off the shot to let your body renew its self (just use comdoms during this time) and go on a different BC. If you can anyway. But yes find a woman gyno and talk to her about your problems and concerns. Maybe even go to planned parenthood? You do need to see someone about it though.

I had a sex drive on depo but it also made me depressed and gained a few lbs (btwn 5-8lbs). I got it 2wice and that was it for me. I had no cramps and no period though.

Is there any way you can take the pill instead? Sometimes when youve been on something for so long your body reacts different to it. Plus 7-8 years you get older your body changes and this may be the way its reacting to your body changing. I would say its time to try something different. Woulfnt hurt to try it for a good 3 months then you can go back if you want.

Plus I would get a regular check up to make sure the rest of your is ok. Sometimes certain symptoms are small causes of bigger problems. Good thing youre heading to the doc though.

    From PlannedParenthood.org:

Women should not use the shot continuously for more than two years unless no other method is right for them.

    * Women who use DMPA may have temporary bone thinning. It increases the longer they use DMPA. Bone growth begins again when women stop using the shot. Whether or not there is a complete recovery of bone mass is unknown.

    * Whether or not temporary bone thinning leads to greater risk of bone fracture from osteoporosis much later in life is also unknown.

To protect your bones, get regular exercise and get extra calcium and vitamin D — either through your diet or by using supplements.

My older sister has been on Depo for almost two years... she's EVIL!! she has these INSANE mood swings (she's all the way across the atlantic and I still can't stand it) and gets depressed all the time. she hasn't complained about her sex drive though (in fact, I think she wants it more, but I don't know about her orgasm potential) and she still gets her period for weeks at a time (mostly spotting). My other older sister had more of the things described above (other posts) and more. She eventually had to go off.

I was gonna go on Depo, and my doctor had me go on a low dose pill first for health reasons. I'm glad too. I could hardly handle the pill and I had to stop taking it after 2 months. I started lactating a few weeks after I stopped taking it (surprise for my bf). I wouldn't want that stuff being stuck in my system for months at a time.

I was on Depo for about 3 years and switched back to the pill a couple of years back. I gained about 10 lbs a year and was told that was the AVERAGE. I had the same problem with a decreased sex drive and although it wasn't visible to others, I was losing a lot hair when I brushed it. When I finally did get off of it, I bled PROFUSELY for over a month and became anemic because of it. It was like every period I skipped hit me all at once. I couldn't believe it. I hate taking the pill, but it's much better than going through this.

when i got put on depo i lost about 12 pounds which was insane because i was a 17 year old athlete. It made me SEVERELY depressed, and I had trouble getting wet as well, plus less of a sex drive. I also had "spotting" nonstop, but the spotting was more like super heavy bleeding with clots whenever it felt like coming. It was the worst 6 months ever. Now I am on Estrostrep and I like it a lot except I gained a few pounds and have to work harder than ever to stay myregular weight.

OMG jenna I had the same problem when I came off it. What was weird though it took over a year for me to get a period again and when I did it hit me so hard I was unable to get out of bed for over a month...My mom took me to the hospital and I had a blood transfusion. Depo is something i never care to repeat. I want to try the patch but I cant think of anyway to wear it at work without it looking tacky.

I was on Depo from age 20-25 with occasional breaks. At first I thought it was just amazing - because I had no idea that I was clinically depressed -- I thought everyone was as flat and uninterested in life as me.

I gained about 12lbs in total - and it is such a slow and insidious weight gain that you almost don't notice it until you try and get your 'skinny jeans' on and end up lying on the bed sucking your gut in, heaving them on...

Some months I had stabbing, searing, hot-poker breast pain. Sometimes I had cramps for the whole three months. Sometimes everything was fine - and I was willing to put up with it to avoid getting my period.

And so -- eventually I started getting horrid cystic acne. The kind that would take days to erupt and then would scar brutally. It's funny, my doctor said of my unexplained symptoms, 'it is to be expected when you're on a drug that lasts for 3-months' (minimum).

Took me many months to get my periods back after the fact. I also tried implanon (the arm stick) - and my god, i was a crying, spotty, spotting, fatty, psycho beeeeeyotch. Luckily that wore off very quickly once it was out - and the weight went away too.

Sadly, the pill was also a disaster. Nowadays i'm married anyway - and i can't seem to get pregnant... my doctor assures me that if i've got regular periods then i'm fine -- but i'm not convinced.

After so many years on depo - god only knows what the state of my bones is.

I remember about 5 years ago this website where women fully bagged out depo - and i couldn't believe they had so many problems because it seemed cool to me. I was just so far beyond denial that I really thought it was ok. Now i sound just like one of them.

In the end, it is a cancer medication - no wonder it does what it does. It leaves you in this limbo state constantly. My sex drive was a joke - because i felt completely asexual all the time...

I don't want to scare you girls off - because i know especially in your early 20s it is crucial not to get yourself pregnant for so many reasons. I just wish boys could take something (although they never would!!)

Some friends have praised the 'Yasmin' pill - though i didn't have much luck with it. It's claim to fame is: lowered fluid retention, less acne, less period pain blah blah. A friend of mine swears by it - but she can't see her depression and anxiety - which is very obvious to the outside world.

Sometimes I also wish our bodies weren't always unconsciously crying out to reproduce - otherwise it wouldn't mind all these drugs.

I would just like to warn you all to consider VERY carefully before you take any of these 3-monthly or yearly drugs... you might not notice it until you have a whole collection of symptoms that just wear you down completely.

    That's my 2 cents.

My experiences were pretty much identical to all of the above after taking depo for 2 years. Slow, scary weight gain (20 pounds); depression and weird uncharacteristic mood swings (for which I self-medicated, bad idea!); and the WORST acne that I have ever experienced in my short life. And none of that made sense since all through highschool I was a runway model with clear skin and great self esteem. Depo turned me into a different person when I started taking it at 17, and while it was a humbling experience, I'm still trying to get back my confidence after being off of it for 2 years.

And...the sex! Probably the most important point about depo, since it's supposed to make impulsive sex possible...just KILLED my sex drive. Luckily I got that back. But I'm still working off this spare tire around my middle. I would say avoid any hormonal birth control that stays in your system for such a long period of time. There are better options. Low dose bc pills, nuva ring (which I've heard great things about) and even good old fashioned condoms, which with the right partner can be fun even! Gad. I sound like my eighth grade health class teacher....

I've been on Depo for about three years and am lucky to say I have never had a problem with it. No issues with sex drive, no migranes, pain, etc. And yes, you do not have a period, which some girls hate... they prefer to have a period every month. However, I was lucky before the shot and never had cramps, bloating or pain. I really think it is just different for every girl who takes it.

I tried the nuvaring, it caused irritation to all the skin around it for me, but I have many friends that swear by it. I also went on the patch, which was great for awhile, but not good if you smoke. Now I'm back on the pill, makes me sick as hell, but at least its safe(r) if I'm gonna work in a smoky bar.

That is exactly how I felt when I was on it... The problems for me started when I got off... I bled so much when I first got my period I thought I was going to die... Seriously, I ended up in the hospital (overnight)... It took over a year for my periods to regulate (I bled twice a month for the first few months and spotted for over a year in between)... It never effected my sex drive and I really didnt gain any weight, but after that year of hell... I would never recommend it to anyone...

Plus, the whole bone density thing is a big issue that people (myself included) are rarely told about in advance... I didn't find out until way after I stopped the shots... I was on it for over four years...

Okay, first: everyone who is worried about their bone density from being on Depo, you can go get a bone density test done for around $150, I think. Have Planned Parenthood, your OBGYN, or the local hospital make a referral because I think it's only done at special clinics.

I have to say that all in all, I'm rather pleased with Depo for me.
I've been on it for four and a half years, and I haven't had hair loss, psychotic mood swings (that I know of, tee hee), or depression (once again, it's hard to judge it for yourself, but I think I strike other people as a bounce-back, normally upbeat type of girl).
The first two years that I was on it, I moved to college; the fact that it was in a strikingly colder environment than home meant that I wasn't into my physical activities as much as I was before...or shall I say, "at all." Then there was the cafeteria...good food. Really good food. So when I went on Depo I was at about 138, and now I'm at around 148-153. But really, I like food, I've always liked food, and you have to realize that your metabolism slows each decade (or some similar measurement.) Really, I could stand to lose some weight, but for me, I don't really think it's Depo.

And for the libido, it's hard for me to judge. I was pretty active before going on the shot, but I did everything except for intercourse. During that first year and a half I was on it, I had my first serious relationship (see thread on "losers," he's loser #1). The funny thing was that I blamed my occasional long periods of sexual lackluster on the Depo; turns out I was just dating a shit head, who was also a prude about anything happening outside of closed doors. Not being exactly what you call a sexual wallflower, is it any wonder that a) I probably ate more comfort food because of it, and b) my sex life went through occasional ruts that lasted months?

I don't know what's going to happen when I get off of Depo, or what the long term ill effects are going to be. I do know that I don't want kids and that this probably won't change; I also know that second to the fact that depo has the highest (or second highest) rate of protection against pregnancy (99.7%), I don't want to have a period. I haven't had a period in probably two years, and even before then it only came around once or twice a year for a bit of spotting that lasted a couple days. It is odd to consider the natural implications of a drug like Depo, but I was comforted by a Planned Parenthood Doctor who said: Women's bodies are meant to birth a baby a year. From that point on, I was okay with going against nature; screw nature if she thinks I'm going to be dropping babies like bowling balls once a year (and I come from good Eastern Block stock, so you know I have the hips to do it.)

So, for those of you who are weighing the options, try the luna shot first. I believe it's similar chemically, but it only lasts for a month. Some girls try it before going on Depo, and some take the luna, go off long enough to have a period, and then go back on. Rinse, wash, repeat. Another good point is that even if someone who was related to you didn't do so good on Depo, it doesn't mean that you won't. I had a close relation who got severely depressed, and I think had spotty periods, and went off it. My reaction wasn't anything like that.

    Good Luck!

p.s. for the note that said it was a cancer treatment, I believe it was actually initially started as a libido suppressant for sexual offenders. Swell, I know, I know, I know--and that probably blows all the positive stuff I've said about Depo, but also realize that they were administering this drug to men, not women...

oh, and also regarding the note about birthcontrol for men, I swear they have that over in Europe...but I'm going to blame a mainly conservative, middle-aged, white, male government on not getting it the hell over here as quickly as possible.
