Default Okay - you guys know everything

So I am pretty sure that I suffer from a form of Impulse Control Disorder. Seeing a therapist and getting medicated is strictly, absolutely, positively and in all other firm ways not an option. I'm wondering if anyone here knows of another way of approaching this - like a tea, vitamin or something?

What impulses do you need to control?

    According to Wikipedia:

Impulse control disorder is a set of brain disorders including intermittent explosive disorder (hot-headedness), kleptomania (stealing), pathological gambling, pyromania (fire-starting) and trichotillomania (pulling one's hair out).

That covers a whole lot of very different things . . .

I had a trichotillomaniac friend in high school. She said she had been ripping out her hair for as long as she could remember...She had all sorts of bald patches and no eyebrows or armhair, but hated therapy/most of the world.

She 'cured' herself by taking up chainsmoking and this fun little trick with elastic bands on her wrist- everytime she wanted to twirl-n-rip, she snapped her wrist. Her wrist was so blue it looked like she was wearing a watch unless you looked closely, but she did it...and then she had to get away from the rubber band.

Anyhow, now she's relatively ok, if a bit of a drinker...she's mostly off drugs and got promoted at the law firm she works at. A borderline success story...I mean, her hair is back, but not her eyebrows.

I pull my hair out. It's really trippy when you look this up and realize that something you though was entirely idiosyncratic (even to the ritual surrounding the pulling) is actually a syndrome. Like, "wow. I'm not an individual at all."

My brother used to pull out all his hair when he was about 11. He was totally bald, and then he also pulled out his eyebrows and eyelashes, and then he'd pick at the hair on his arms until he bled. I'm not usually a fan of psychiatric medication, but a combination of therapy and antidepressants helped him stop and he's perfectly normal now.

Thank you JR, but as I am not a smoker I don't think that is my solution either.

Style your hair in ways that don't leave free strands out. (Tight ponytails and buns.) Make a keychain with hair-like material on it (tassles or what-have-you) and yank on that for a while.
This can be beat. I worked with a woman who had suffered from OCD- compusive hand washing & germ-phobia. When I met her, she had overcome to the point that she was working at a pathology lab, handling samples with the most common contagious diseases.

5HTP really helps. I lost 50 lbs with it. I have had OCD most of my life and 5HTP helps even that, but not 100% It's OTC, not too expensive and it's not a stimulant of any kind, but high doses are generally needed. Just a suggestion

OK...i think these (or this one) condition needs therapy. You don't need meds. if you don't want, but talk therapy would be good, especially with a therapist who is a specialist in this field!!!

Psychologist, they are not allowed to prescribe meds. And many work on a sliding fee!!!!

Or find an online support group. Because this is a disorder, that don't just go away.

You need to find out why you do this. And that is easier said than done.

    Good luck hun,

    Pamela

shoot, I think I might have that to a degree but I haven't ripped out all my hair so I guess I'm okay. I've always been a little OCD but nothing that got in the way. Shit, I think we all probably have some disorder or another.

Try taking the palm of your hand and pushing on the top of your head, your eyes, or whearever else you have the itch to pull at.
Or take the tweezers and go for the areas that you need to get rid of hair at anyways. The tweezers is what fixed me, and a child hood friend, once it became an ok habit, and I could devote time to it w/out feeling guilty, the urge to do it disapeared.

    Jenny,

I've been learning Thought Energy Synchronization Therapy - the basic idea is that you can stimulate accupressure points to eliminate or reduce obsessions, impulses, phobias, etc. I've been practicing on people and so far it's amazing. Roger Callahan has a book, Tapping the Healer Within, that covers some of it and tells you how to treat yourself, but it's mostly effective only if you have an isolated problem and are otherwise healthy (IMHO). Or if you PM me, I can try to guide you through it.

Wow! This is nuts, who knew there were others. I pulled my hair out out intermittently since high school...during periods of high stress. I hadn't done it in years but recently went at it again. I talked to a shrink and he put me back on the old medication and it stopped *snap* just like that. My question now, is I want to get back to dancing but I've got this bald spot. (Well, now its getting to be a short tuft) does anyone have any suggestions for covering it up when i dance, its right in the middle of the back of my head. i tried gluing on some hair extensions, but couldn't seem to cover the tracks up right..my hair is fine and red, and I've got a cowlick right there. any brain stormers?
