    Default My tooth hurts..*owy*

Ok I turn into a big baby when my tooth or joint hurts. Its the last tooth on my upper left side of my mouth. The gum is sore and hurts when I eat tough food..so I dont eat food on that side now. Its been hurting since Sunday (4days so far).

I have an idea it my be peridontal disease or gingivitis. Its starting to hurt more everyday. No fever thank god but drinking sure does help. I think I might have to get it removed? ACK...I dont like people fumbling around in my mouth taking things out that are mine.

Do they give you antibiotics afterwards? Its only one how long would I have to be out of work for? If anyone has gotten their wisdom teeth/tooth removed in southern CA...if so how much did it cost? I have the money thank god I just dont want to get ripped off.

If you think it's your wisdom tooth, it might be impacted. I've had two of them removed for the very same reason. Go see an oral surgeon. Ambesol helps somewhat, but not much and certainly not for long term usage. Good luck...I hate teeth issues!!! Feel better.

It could be just something as simple as a cavity. You'd be amazed how much those can hurt. I was born with very little outter tooth enamel so I was prone to getting them often growing up. As a result, I've had two root-canals done already. Just crappy. You may not need to get the tooth pulled unless it's in extremely bad shape, most likely you may need a filling or worse case scenario, a root canal done if there is a bad infection inside the tooth. A root canal will usually run you anywhere between $1,500 and $2,000 and will require four total dentist trips. The first is for them to remove the root from the tooth and fill it with antibiotics. They put a temporary crown on and then you then come back a few weeks later for them to finish the job and fill the tooth to keep it solid and free of infection. Lastly, you go a general dentist for them to fit you with a permanent crown and lastly, a few weeks later, you have the final crown put on.

Years ago, this was a very painful proceedure but not anymore. I've had two done and short of being numb from the novicaine, it was a pretty simple proceedure with very little if any pain involved at all. People make it sound much worse than it is. After any one of these proceedures, you are usually able to work or do anything else within 24 hours max.

Now, if the tooth needs pulling, it's a bit more extreme but not bad. It's usually best to have someone take you home afterwards as they may dope you up a bit and the experience is a bit uncomfortable. You usually bleed for a while after and they stuff your mouth with gauze. You usually get some really cool pain killers which you are on for a day or two in addition to antibiotics (usually amoxicillin). General recovery time from that is anywhere from 24-48 hours before you're back to your old self again.

I just had my impacted wisdom teeth (all four, lucky me!) removed in July. I had gotten a BAD infection in one of the sockets...which caused excrutiating pain (worse than having dry socket) and after 2 weeks on penicillin, I had to have all of the teeth pulled.

My advice is to find a good DENTAL SCHOOL in your area. Dental schools charge about 1/4 the price that private practices do and the job is as good, or sometimes better. For me, I went to the dental school in Chicago, and to have all 4 wisdom teeth removed under anesthesia, it cost me $750. The quotes for private practice was running about $1,000-1,500 PER TOOTH.

It does hurt, but it's bearable. Just follow the directions to the "T" and if you start to get into excrutiating pain afterwards, you probably have dry socket...go get it packed immediately. Once they pack it, there are no problems. I didn't take any of my pain killers, but they do give you 2 different pain killers (usually an ibuprofen and a percocet or vicoden) along with a prescription of penicillin. Go get these things BEFORE you have the surgery (they will usually give you the prescription once you have scheduled the surgery/extraction.

Good luck and get it taken care of as soon as possible!!

Oh, if you have insurance, you can usually call them and ask if they will pick up the bill for your dental clinic procedures. Most insurances will since they pay out way less than they would at an ordinary dental/surgery office.

Oh, I also forgot. Put cold packs on your face every hour for 15-20 minutes at a time. On the third day, you go to hot packs. It controls the swelling. I didn't have any swelling at all. But, I did the cold/hot packs religiously.

Great tips everyone! Thanks a bunch. I was worried it would cost me like 1500 or something..that would make me poor. Ill start looking for a good dental school here. What are some criteria I should look for in one?

Awww, pobrecita. Advice from the girl with $6,000 teeth- clove oil is good for toothaches too. Is it a wisdom tooth?
Find a tiny mirror & stand in front of the bathroom mirror. See if you can see inside your mouth what exactly is the problem.
My dental care is through CareCredit- pricey, but I wanted to afford my family dentist. If you have good credit you can get approved.
    Good luck sweety.
PS You can go over the border into TJ for cheaper dental work. And contrary to popular belief, it's actually high quality with a lot of docs there. I thought I had a bad surface filling from Mexico, but my own dentist told me those fall out all the time, no matter where they're done.

TigerMilk, have you had a check up lately? As DW wrote, it could be a cavity. To have one filled is about $150 in the Midwest.

Just so you know, I had a massive infection in the socket (or by the nerve) of one of my wisdom teeth. I didn't have a fever, either....

You're better off going to get checked out first and seeing exactly what the problem is. The head area is no place to have an infection.

Dental schools? They should all be state accredited. Most are. Look for one that has a student clinic and get their prices ahead of time. It usually takes a lot longer than going into a dental office, but dammit, for the price, it's worth it.

Btw, last summer I had to take my Mom to an oral surgeon, for two teeth to be pulled: $400.00. There was a guy there that had 4 wisdom teeth pulled: $1500.00

I had all four wisdom teeth impacted and removed a while ago. I don't know what it cost becuase I was lucky enough then to have my parents pay for it. I have also had sinus problems a couple times that felt EXACTLY like my teeth/gums were hurting and went to the dentist to find out there was nothing wrong but something in my sinuses. That just went away on its own but you do need to see a doctor to find out.

And this is why I do not live in a big city, lol.

When I got my wisdoms pulled in March it was a grand total of less than $400 for all four of them, plus I think about $40 for the two scripts. One was LorTab 7.5 and the other was phenegren.

    It was $85 a tooth.

If you are a small person like I am, your mouth does not have enough room for all of your teeth plus the wisdoms, so you might be having a problem with those.

The pain is kinda like having a tooth come in only a little more severe.
Not a sharp pain, but a constant ache. It really drives you batty after time, lol.

Good luck to ya hun!!! I hope you find a good Dr. who is cheap as well.

Hell, for prices like VG quoted, you would almost be better off flying to a small town and having the work done there then flying home.

Yeah, but keep in mind that the quotes I was getting was for having a private practice oral surgeon remove the teeth under anesthsia...in which case I would have to had paid for a private practice anesthesiologist and also a nurse. Since one of my wisdom was "wrapped" on the jaw bone, I HAD to be under in order for them to be able to get that one out...

Anywho...check out your local dental school. Hell, I go there to get my teeth cleaned. It costs me $20. For my invisalign, I'll pay $3,000...as opposed to the almost $7,000 our local ortho charges for doing the same exact thing.

Thanks for all your helpful advice girls and guys. I took like 5 ibuprofen yesterday, went to work and drank a little bit. It was bleeding if I pushed on it yesterday and swollen too. Today is not so bad just a bit tender and feels like a tooth is in there.
I guess its time to go to the dentist and get at least a check up. Ive been trying to find a dental school but all Im coming up with is trade schools (ie Phoenix, Devry etc). I must be looking in the wrong places.

Oh, honey - you can't go to a dental school for surgery. All they'll do there is scrape your teeth.
My estimate (at my dentist, who is a moderately expensive guy) was a little less than $1400 (Cdn) for all four. If you are bleeding, however, you can maybe go to the emergency room of a hospital and they will do it there (or, they will here if there is an obviously immediate need).

^ This is SO not true! I went to a dental school for oral surgery. In most dental schools, you learn basic dental techniques all the way up to oral and maxilliofacial/cranial surgery. Where else are they going to learn this shit??? Maybe you don't have this stuff in CA, but it's available here...

Keep looking for the schools. I'll do a search and post it back here.

If your gum is bleeding and hurting, chances are you've got an infection in there. Especially if you have impacted wisdom teeth...it creates enough of an opening to allow food to get trapped, but is nearly impossible to get it all out...which rots and then causes bacterial growth and then infection. Yuck. You'll feel so much better once it's taken care of.

Just so you know...if you have an infection, you'll have to take antibiotics for a week or so (depending on the severity of the infection) and THEN go in for your surgery. They absolutely will not and cannot operate while you have an infection. If it hurts really bad, the dentist will usually give you a round of antibiotics and some pain killers (I got percocet). Take them wisely. Only take them when the pain is unbearable...you'll only get a tiny bit...so make them last.

BTW...ER's in hospitals will not do oral surgery. They'll pack it up and then ship you off to an oral surgeon.

Found one: These are the clinics that are run http://acs.ucsd.edu/~ucsdfdc/clinics.php

If you want to call and find out when you need to be there...etc, call the UCSD Dental School and get more info on where they run their surgery clinics.

There is also a clinic at UCLA School of Dentistry. http://uclasod.dent.ucla.edu/patient...id=244#billing

Hope this helps!! Let me know how it goes!
