    Default Traveling Tips

Can anyone share any traveling tips for those who are going on the road for the first time?

I've been dancing for about a year now and I'm going to check out the clubs in Philly and NJ. I'm about a couple of hours away from there and unfortunately I'll be going by myself. I was thinking I should drive my older 1994 Nissan instead of my newer car? I'm pretty good with directions and I'm getting all the things I need together.. Does anyone have any other advice?

Drive the reliable car. You don't want to get stranded in a strange place.
1 Buy a wrist wallet or "fanny pack" to keep your ID & cash in. One night I was almost locked out of my hotel in snowy Connecticut because I left my ID in my hotel room & the desk clerk wouldn't let me in. If they know you're a stripper, the hotels look at you cockeyed.
2 Invest in a hard case luggage set with combo locks so you don't have to carry a key. Be aware that road girls are a target to many- people know you are all alone & won't hesitate to rip you off or mess with you.
3 Turn your cash into US Postal money orders & mail them home- you do not want to carry all your cash all the time.
4 Have the bouncers walk you out of the club & carry keychain Mace. Be careful what you tell others about your circumstances. (Travel plans, planned days off, etc.) One of my friends had a stalkerish customer follow her from 2 STATES away.

Just be professional & careful & road life won't be as tough as it can get with complications.

PS I hope Tina posts on this thread, I learned a lot from her.

Better than Money orders - a bank account with someplace like BANK OF AMERICA that has locations in your home state and where you're going...the $$ is safe and always accessible (not a pile of MOs in your home mailbox). If you do mail home, have a trusted friend collect and hold your mail, or ask the Post Office to hold it there.

Shut off your newspaper, mail service (hold at PO) etc, so your house won't look unlived in

park your extra car somewhere safe and legal...don't need no 3 months of impound charges

    CELL PHONE FOR SAFETY

Check in with friends or family every couple days. Let someone know you'll check in every X days and make sure you do. If anything really bad happens, you want someone ready to look for you and notice you're not checking in as planned

^ Yeah, check in with someone EVERY DAY. If something bad happens, someone needs to make noise about your not checking in- a person cannot be declared "Missing" until 24 hours have passed.
I mainly recommend the US Post office as a way to change money as there is no way to guarantee you'll be able to find a branch of your bank wherever you go, not to mention getting there in time for business hours. The Post Office keeps government job hours so if you get up early you can change your money & not have to worry. Fill out & split the money order from the receipt so in case one piece gets lost, you can still get your cash back.

My bank is out of state. I mail MO's directly to my savings Account. I have deposits slips and postage-paid envelopes in my briefcase. You can get the MO's anywhere, at a currency exchange or a convenience store or the service desk of many grocery stores. Keep the copy of the reciept in your briefcase or whatever you use, then mail the MO's right away.

You can pay bills like this, too. (as suggested in a thread in Dollar Den). Just buy the MO's in appropriate amounts, fill them out, and mail. Staple the reciept from the MO to your portion of the bill.

Also, don't keep all your dancer clotes in one bag. Keep the things yo plan to wear that night in your dance bag, and keep spares in your suitcase in your hotel. That way, if your bag gets stolen, you will not be stuck with nothing.

Luckily, I bank with Bank of America, and there are branches everywhere I have lived/travel. It may be beneficial to get an account with a bank that has branches in most states or where you plan to travel.

Also, stock up on stuff that you use on a regular basis. Especially specialty items that you're not sure will be carried by the stores where you will be working. That way, if you encounter financial issues while you're gone (I'm the QUEEN of financial difficulties), you won't have to worry if you'll be able to afford tampons or whatever!

You should also consider getting some non perishable food items, a microwave (the small cheap kind), and a hot plate, maybe take a pot and/or pan...that way you don't always have to go out to eat!

I work on the road always. It's not a big deal. Just focus on getting weekly rate motels or suites. Travel with a small microwave and decent sized ice chest. Plus a months worth of clothing. Watch the Weather Channel so you are aware of the temperatures wherever you go.

Stores are the same no matter where you go. Every town I work in has a Super Wal Mart, Target, Walgreens and the like. You can get your nails done wherever you go. Find Rec centers and YMCA's to work out in. Most have daily rates of $5-$10. I bank with B of A and Wells and have no problems. I only deposit bill money in my accounts anyway. If you bank with a small bank with no multiple state locaations, FED EX a money order to your branch just to cover checks you write out for bills. Some of your bills you can possibly walk in if the stores/businesses you owe have locations where you are working.

There is nothing to be afraid of. Just be patient and work at least a FULL week everywhere you go. The clubs that fare better for you are the ones you want to keep going back to.
