    Default What is tax deductible?

    Hi beautiful girls!
Yesterday I spent some money in some sexy things that I want to use for work (if and when I get hired ) and thought that perhaps, because it was an expense towards work, my shopping would be tax deductible.
Could you girls guide me into what's tax deductible and what's not?
My philosophy is that anything you spend on your body, since your body is your instrument for work, such as tanning, make up, hair salon, nails, clothes, and even plastic surgery should be tax deductible. But I'm sure the IRS won't agree 100% with me.
    So, some guidance please?
    Thanks a bunch!

PS: I visited three clubs last night and the three of them asked me to come back for an audition as soon as I have my business license. So that's a good sing :-)

With a great accountant, you'd be surprised what is tax deductible. I had a sales job before in a fitness center and I was able to deduct my gym membership, tanning visits, vitamins, skin care, gas milege, clothing spent to maintain my fit apperance and anything else that I spent towards my career. As long as you are paying taxes you can clain deductibles. I advise you to talk to an H and R block accountant and she will give you some advice and tools on how to keep up with your expenses and receipts so next year, you will have the necessary evidence, just in case you get audited. Hopw that helps, and good luck!

It's important to understand that if you get audited they will assume a certain amount that you need to live on, in addition to deducted business expenses, rather than just going through a bank account and other financial trails. So every bit of money you spend on work expenses is visible income. A reminder that it's best to report all income.

I had bad experiences with H&R Block- they weren't very knowledgeable as to what strippers can deduct. Call around and ask different accountants in your area. The accountant I have now is great, and I found out I can deduct things that I never would have thought of before.
Here is a list of some things that are tax deductible (according to my accountant):
    clothes and shoes
    makeup
    hair products:hairspray, gel, etc.
hair dye:either doing it yourself, or the salon bill to do it
    hair extensions
part of your cell phone bill (if you use your cell phone for work reasons)
    travel expenses and gas
gas used to get to the mall or stores to buy stuff for work
    baby wipes, perfume, body spray
    tampons
getting your nails done and tanning
suitcases to keep your dancer clothes in
    razors or waxing
if you go to dinner and talk about work (with other dancers, your manager, etc)
-this is considered a "business dinner" and is a writeoff
If you have to pay for your own music at work
    - at our club, we put $2 in the juke box to play music for our set each time we go on stage, and this is a write off- we just have to keep track of how many times we go on stage each night

My philosophy is that anything you spend on your body, since your body is your instrument for work, such as tanning, make up, hair salon, nails, clothes, and even plastic surgery should be tax deductible. But I'm sure the IRS won't agree 100% with me.
You're correct that the IRS will probably not agree 100%. In some instances the IRS won't even agree 1%. For instance, the US congress has specifically legislated that elective plastic surgery is of purely personal benefit, thus NO plastic surgery expenses are deductible (with the single exception of the Chesty Love Letter Ruling, allowing a business deduction for 'professional' sized breast implants over 1000cc each).

Most other deductions you mention are bound by an IRS principle commonly referred to as the 'housewife test' ---> if a housewife (i.e. someone who is not involved in business at all) chooses to spend money on tanning sessions, hair, nails, makeup, bikinis etc. with absolutely no business application in mind, then the benefits of these things must be of a personal nature and thus not a legitimate business expense deduction. In practice the IRS usually is willing to accept a partial deduction (typically 50%) for expenses that fail the 'housewife test' but are relevant to increasing dancing income. But only expenses which are absolutely and exclusively for business use qualify for unquestioned deductibility, i.e. 5" stilettos, sexy gowns and costumes, theatrical makeup etc. which are generally of no value whatsoever to a 'housewife'.

As has been pointed out time and again, one CAN deduct whatever they choose to as a business expense. If you're not audited then all of your business deductions are accepted by default ... well, almost. If the IRS does choose to audit you they typically go back 3 years, and can disallow deductions and send you a tax bill for previous years as well as for the current year. It remains for the IRS to actually accept your deductions as being legitimate, or for 4 years worth of time to pass, before your deductions are totally 'safe'.

Also be aware that claiming a high percentage of deductions contributes to a higher probability of an audit taking place. Plus, your accountant does not work for the IRS, thus an accountant's 'judgement call' in regard to what's deductible may not be in agreement with the IRS agent's 'judgement call' if/when you are audited. This is particularly true when attempting to take 100% business expense deductions for items that fail the 'housewife test'.
