    Default Portland, OR Laws

I've searched in the forums here, and on the internet in general, and I'm having trouble finding this out. Can I, not being 21, dance in a club that serves alcohol (21+) in Portland? If yes, are there further restrictions on my working there? If not, how are the 18+ clubs in the area? Would it be more worth my time to go to Vancouver, WA to dance than to dance in the 18+ clubs? Thanks!

It depends, I've seen it done different styles...

At one club I worked at, minors could work but they were very closely monitored... they could only be in the performance area or a separate stage area (they could sit/talk/dance here in between the main stage performance). If they wanted to go to the bathroom, a bouncer would have to escort them there (not in, of course), and they were scolded if they didn't follow them.

Where I work now, the minor rules are less strictly enforced, and the girls have to stay in the back, but they're allowed to get give air dances.

If I recall correctly, OLCC law says that minors cannot give 'private performances'. At my old club, they could give couch dances on the mini stage area... at my current club, they let girls go into the (curtained) private dance area.

This varies club by club; some don't allow minors to work. Call ahead & ask when you're asking about audition times.

Thanks, but I guess I'm looking more for actual laws. I can't afford to get busted dancing, so I don't want to toe the line. Can you (or anyone) give me the actual law on it? I really wish I could find it. I even searched Oregon state's site, and I can't seem to get it.

I can't say for actual law, but I've heard a scoop that a good place to work as a minor is Exotica, which has a non-bar stage area for under-21 dancers. I've also heard that the 18+ juice-bar clubs are kind of skeezy, low-money and full of extras.

Have not been to any of these places yet, though -- just reporting secondhand.

I work at cabaret and the girls have to do their set and go back downstairs. there is a small private dance area, basically a raised platform, for the underage girls to do their dances. there's no liquor allowed in the dressing room, as it is the only 'minor' area, but that rule isn't really enforced too badly. the minors seem to make less money because they don't get to mingle with the customers, but if they can hustle a dance from the rack or if some guy wants to talk to them they can give them the line 'im a minor, i have to go downstairs, but if you'd like to talk you can get dances.' it works. some of the underage girls make ok money there.

as far as other clubs go, i'm not sure. i know jiggles is a juice bar so i'm pretty sure you could 'hustle' more there. i heard from someone who has been in the industry for years that you can make good money at jiggles on the weekends (hundreds of dollars) if you're good but she did mention that it got a little nasty there. i'm not quite sure what she meant by that.

that's about all i can contribute at this point. since getting here in sept. i am still feeling out the clubs myself.

the liquor laws in oregon are some of the strictest i've ever come across, except for dry counties in southern states.

    good luck!

Well, here's something that looks promising:

You'll just have to have the patience to rifle through all of it...I suppose keywords would be 'private performances', or something along those lines? Have fun reading (bleh)!

OLCC Allows Minor Performers to Work in Nightclubs, Bars (March 15, 2004, News Release)

Excerpt from news release, title above:
Section 6(a, b) of the reinstated rule allows minors to perform in premises that are otherwise posted off-limits to those under 21, with these restrictions:
-When not performing, entertainers must remain in an area where alcohol is not served.
-Entertainers under 18 must have written permission from a juvenile court judge, and those under 14 must also get a Bureau of Labor and Industries work permit.
Leading up to the Jan. 2, 2003 ban, commissioners grew concerned that club managers went beyond legal limits by allowing by allowing minor entertainers to mix with patrons before and after performance to sell music CDs, t-shirts, bar-related products, and to engage in other prohibited activities, such as private lap dances. Under the old rule (now reinstated), minors were only allowed in the drinking area while performing, or no "longer than is necessary to perform the duties."

In case anyone else was wondering. I'm also going to call the OLCC and double check. Can't hurt, right?

    Sweet, good to know!

I guess that implies that private lap dances (er air dances) are still a no-go in most legit spots -- however, they'll usually have a separate area for minors to mingle with the custies, anyway, meaning you can still get a regular even if you work in an alcohol club (I see it a lot, guys buying girls sodas and just chatting & throwing her dollars at a separate stage). And as rain said, you can even have a good hustle in a minors area.

I think that one of the reasons that juice bars (like jiggles) are considered nasty, even extras aside, is that they usually give girls $$ based on their drink sales, which I don't like doing... and also, it attracts a) cheapskate young guys and b) older men that want to mingle just with minors. Ick!

Yeah, dancers that are 18-20 can work in pretty much any club in Oregon now, but the law is that you must be kept seperate from the customers, which means that technically you're only allowed to dance on stage (no table dances) but I know some clubs break that rule. So anytime you're not on stage doing your set you're supposed to be in the dressing room or some other area specified for minors.
