    Default Stomach problems before work

I usually have a gassy stomach and handle it quite well with gas-x, pepto, etc. I haven't been to the md in a while but I think it could be IBS. My stomach tends to get worse before work and during work. Sometimes it can be embarrassing if I have a custy and can't get it under control. Well, tonight is "suppose" to be my first night back since an incident a couple of weeks ago and stomach is torn all to hell. I have had five bowel movements today, I had eight yesterday. Now I am all bloated up and feel insecure about my body. I am on a Weight Watchers based diet, which is somewhat high in fiber. I try to eat less fiber on days I plan to work. Today I had a bowl of cereal with organic milk and whole grain waffles for breakfast. Late lunch was brocholi and cheese soup, which I know wasn't good, lol, but I had the craving for it. And I am going to eat a ham sandwich in a minute. Yesterday I had two bowls of cereal for breakfast, a ham sandwich and tomato soup for lunch then beef stew with veggies for dinner. I know some of you are good with foods and knowing how to treat your own body. Any suggestions would be great.

Peppermint candy & tea is a quick way to fix tummy issues, & also chamomile tea but it'll make you sluggish.
Another dancer & I used to share Pepto Bismo pills- they coated our stomachs so well we didn't get drunk from the booze we imbibed....LOL
Have some fried potatoes! Bannanas & meat will "stop" your system for a while.

If it is IBS, the food you're eating is definitely going to contribute to the gas. I have horrible IBS, and I can't eat any dairy at all or any caffeine. Also, when I eat insoluble fibre products (veggies, whole grain, etc) I have to eat it in small portions WITH some soluble fibre at the same time (white rice, white french bread, etc). This is graphic and icky (but so is ibs!)- is there ever any mucus in your stool? that is an IBS giveaway.

I know where you're coming from, and it's hell. If I were you, I'd cut way back on the insoluble fibre, and start to add it back gradually with soluble fibre. Never eat a very big meal; eat smaller meals. Record what you eat and your symptoms later- this is usally a good way to pinpoint what foods are causing you to bloat. If you do think it's IBS, I'd see a doctor. There are pills. Sometimes taking a Beano pill with the first bite of your meal will also help.

    good luck

Could be a lactose intolerancce to milk, or a sensitivity to the gluten in wheat. Try cutting out the milk and wheat products---both can contribute to gut problems if there is any hint of a sensitivity.

Also, the good bacteria in your intestinal tract could be out of whack. Lots of things can contribute to this--antibiotic use, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, too much sugar leading to excess yeast.

I would suggest the use of probiotics. Check out Primal Defense by Garden of Life www.gardenoflife.com. This is a great product I use every day ( had some pretty serious gut issues of my own at one time ) Probiotics are basically capsules that contain billions of the good bacteria that naturally live in our gut. It's a pretty delicate little ecosystem down there. Once the balance has been disturbed, you get the symptoms you are describing--gas, loose stool, frequent bowel movements, pain. Once balance has been restored, symptoms disappear.

It's a pretty easy solution, and extrememly effective. The capsules aren't cheap, but who can put a price on good health?

I was going to ask if you drink milk. I used to get a lot of stomach problems and when I cut out milk they pretty much stopped. I just drink lactaid or soymilk now. Occasionally I'll crave a milkshake or something and my tummy usually cramps up after I drink it. And watch out for Pepto. Maybe not everyone has the same effect but if I take that stuff I get constipated.

    I can totally empathize...

I have IBD (ulcerative colitis), and it had been the culprit of many missed days and early leaves. A lot of the times, if I eat anything before work, I can expect to be in pain and feel bloated. This is what I have come up with, hopefully it will help you:

The morning that you are going to work, eat a good breakfast - this way you are getting some calories in but you will have all day to digest them. Stick to proteins like egg whites, turkey bacon, vege sausage... NO FRUITS or fruit juices. For me, I have found a major cause of gas and stomach pain to be bread carbs (bread, cereal, oatmeal, pasta, etc.), so try to avoid those. One exception, however, seems to be "low carb" bread products - I'm not sure why, but they are much gentler on my tummy.

Generally after breakfast, I will down my coffee (thank God I can still have my morning java), go to the bathroom, and then go work out for a couple of hours.

In the afternoon, say around 2 or 3, I'll eat a calorie dense protein bar. Protein shakes bloat me up for several hours, so I do not drink those before work. Try to find a bar that has around 300 calories and 30 gms of protein - and personally, I have to check ingredients for splenda, or sucralose (generic name) because I cannot tolerate that. Also, sometimes about an hour after the protein bar, I'll have a cup of sugar free (aspartame sweetened) yogurt. Although I am sensitive to milk products, yogurt is one that I can not only handle, but it seems to be a tummy soother (due to the acidophilus in it - healthy bacteria that helps you break down other foods that might be in your tummy or intestines)

Then I'll go to work around 8. Now, my stomach is completely empty and free from everything that might cause problems. I will bring some soy crisps or a pria bar with me to work to eat midway if I am hungry.

When I get home, I usually have a salad with chicken breast and hard boiled egg or tuna salad with low fat mayo, and a piece of fibrous fruit. By eating fiber before I go to bed, this ensures that when I wake up in the morning, I will hit the bathroom. It keeps my system in a 'normal routine.'

I hope this helps Good luck! If things don't straighten out soon, you might want to go to a gastroenterologist. Your symptoms sound like they could also be Crohn's disease (the other form of irritable bowl disease, IBD), and there are some great medications out there to keep that at bay.

Thanks so much for your help. Yes, I know about the medications that are out there for this. I would rather stick to the "alternative" method. I have been out of nursing for a couple of years and I am starting to see that traditional medicine isn't always the answer. I bought some "Vanilla Silk" soy milk today. I have had it before and it isn't too bad. I take to multi's per day so they should take care of my daily calcium intake. My hubby does cook eggs and what have you for breakfast. So, I will start requesting an egg and perhaps a slice of bacon or two.

Do you think more complex carbs, like potatoes, rice, white bread, etc. have a negative effect on the stomach?

yes, complex carbs do screw up the digestive tracts of people with IBS and IBD. As far as alternative medicines - been there done that, works for some people, but I have to do the scrips... (mesalamine)

Also, you would be interested to read a book by Elaine Gottschall called "Breaking the Vicious Cycle" - it details the 'specific carbohydrate diet' that is designed to help sufferers from IBD and IBS. There is also more info on www.scdiet.org . I have the book, and it makes a lot of sense - this is why I stay away from most carbohydrates. The book explains how certain carbs like gluten and yeasts feed the bad bacteria in your digestive tract and cause problems for those suffering from bowel problems.

Another tip that I've picked up is drinking aloe vera juice. Aloe soothes and calms the digestive tract. It tastes pretty nasty, so you will probably want to mix it (I do one part aloe, one part apple juice)

They make a lemon flavored aloe that is actually not too bad. You should definitely mix it wiht water or juice though. otherwise its kinda think. Yuk.

Oh god, I thought I had this IBS stuff figured out, but that scdiet.org was making a lot of sense too. I have been following what was set out at helpforibs.com, but I feel unhealthy and it's not perfect. Maybe I should go back to the doctor. I envy your coffee!!

Yes, TampaDancer, this seems to make good sense. However, I am hypoglycemic, meaning I have low blood glucose (sugar). I didn't realize this until I was 19 and tryed the low carb diet. I ended up passing out and going into the hospital. My glucose was 36. My albumin was low, as well as, my magnesium and potassium. I actually have a lot of weird symptoms in my body in which they call Dysautonomia, this means my autonomic nervous system does not function properly. I also have low blood pressure and endometriosis. I am not a hypochondriac I promise, all this things have been diagnosed by an md. I refuse to take steroids to boost my immunity and blood pressure. I eat a diet higher in sodium than usual to increase my blood pressure plus cardiovascular exercise seems to help a bit too. Some days I just feel down right weak, then I rest, especially when I stand up and get dizzy/black outs. Now some recent research is also suggesting that IBS and endometriosis are related to disfunction of the immune system. Not trying to get way off subject here or spill my medical history but I think this is something we should be aware of. I don't think taking a lot of meds is a good thing either. I have seen patients in the hospital with multiple disorders/diseases, end up on medications and have the reactions of the meds make them worse then they were in the first place.

Yeah, you have to be careful about taking too many meds. I was on something for a while becuase I had elevated prolactin levels when they did lab work on me. Finally I find out that something I was given before for migraines can elevate your prolactin levels and make your hair fall out which is two of the symptoms I was having. The migraine stuff never helped me and I ended up having to take Parlodel for a while (which isn't cheap without insurance) and come to find out I probably didn't even have to.

I get dizzy like that sometimes greenidlady1, and I figured it's something hormonal. I'ts like I'll hardly know I'm hungry and next thing I know I'm shaking all over. But it doesn't happen all the time.

My partner had IBS symptoms until he completely cut out dairy. Now he does not.

Dairy is not only known milk products -- it might also include pretty much any packaged food product; READ LABELS.

A list of ingredients to watch out for is here, along with a general guide on how to deal:

I've never been to a doctor but I think I have ibs too. I barely eat anything on the days I have to work because I'm afraid I will get diarhea. And then I think maybe I stress out on it so much that I make it worse but I can't help it. I feel like everything I do is affected by it. I'm scared to make plans.I'm scared to go anywhere with anyone because I never know when my stomachs going to start cramping up.I was out of town with my boyfriend once and we were on the highway and I had to make him stop at almost every exit there was for about an 2 hrs. just so I could go to the bathroom I didn't want to get back in his truck because everytime he'd start driving I'd have to go again. It was sooo embarassing because we hadn't been together very long. I worry about it alot.

It seems like all of your symptoms are related and grouped around immunity. Logically, it seems like there's something causing them (the symptoms are interrelated, not seperate "conditions"). A wholistic health practitioner who treats your body as a whole (rather than seperate conditions) might be able to give you some answers.

Other than that, my recommendation would be to eat raw garlic (it will boost your immune system), eat lots of oats (will stabilize your blood sugar, increase your sex drive, and give you more vitality), cut out dairy and anything that is pasteurized (not meant for human consumption), and cut out foods that have been processed - stick with vegetables, fruit, whole grains, and meat. You might experience some detox symptoms (yes there are chemicals in processed foods that your body can be addicted to!) but after a couple weeks you'll probably feel great. Then if you want to you can add back different types of processed foods slowly to see what causes your problem.

Oh, and peppermint tea is very good for upset tummys.

I'm tellin' ya..the probiotics work, 80olivia. What you described in your post used to be me. So now, I take a probiotic capsule every night before I go to bed. It isn't drugs, or medication--just live, good bacteria that help everything run as it should in our guts.

Also, take a digestive enzyme with meals. The older we get, the less enzymes our bodies are able to make to digest our food. Plus, our food doesn't have as many naturally-occuring enzymes in it, becasue the soil that grows it is becoming more and more depleted. Taking a digestive enzyme capsule with meals helps our bodies break down the food more effectively-- reducing stress on our gut and helping to get as much nutrition out of what we take in as we can. So easy, yet so effective and good for the body.

If you have a doctor, get a prescription for Zelnorm. Stuff like Beano and Pepto might actually be making your problems worse.

^^ I agree, but zelnorm is only for IBS - If what she has is IBD, that would not be the answer. Obviously a doctor would diagnose her prior to writing a scrip though (or so we hope)
