Default thinking of moving to AZ, advice?

Im seriously considering moving down to Tempe, AZ. I currently have lived my whole life in a smallish town in ohio and i just cant take the weather or bad economy here anymore.

Basically im looking for movign advice on how to move out of state easily. i have yet to go down and scout out clubs or apartments yet, but i keep being told i should go work at Skin and that i would do well there. Im aiming to move by next fall if not sooner.

any advice on starting over in a new place or anything related to moving far away?

im pretty scared, but i think it would be a good choice.

Pack light. Sleeping bag, 1 plate, 1 bowl, 1 glass etc.

If you like it there - then move the rest of your stuff out there.

Hopefully you have a place you can store it until then.

I move all the time because of my work - that is what I do.

    Ditto what Deogol said.

Find yourself an extended stay hotel and "try out the goods" there before you sign into a lease on an apartment. I've seen so many people make a move like this hoping to improve their life circumstances, only to find out that the grass was browner on the other side, and then yearned to move back home.

My friend moved to AZ from Chicago a little over a year ago. She kept all of her big things at her parents house and took only basic clothes and important items with her. She moved into her aunt's home, so she didn't have a problem finding somewhere to live. but every time family or friends would go visit her, they'd bring a small bag of her belongings from home. She is like an hour from Tempe and she loves it. I'm pretty sure she's never coming back, it's that good. Sorry I don't have any 'real advice' aside from 'pack lightly'......but good luck.

Yes definitely pack light for the initial trip. Take what you would want for 1 month and put the rest in storage. An extended stay room is the best deal - they have basic dishes and cookware in the small kitchen area so you can eat at home. They also often have some kind of internet access.

Find a room and book BEFORE you leave home - use that to determine how much $ you'll need to survive for at least two weeks (preferably a month), plus return trip expenses in case you get here, hate it and/or don't make money and want to leave. Add in some extra $ for unexpected expenses. TAKE ENOUGH MONEY.

Be prepaired to get licensed by the city; bring appropriate ID.

Drive your car. Have a good coverage cellphone with car charger and plenty of minutes so you can make emergency calls if necessary. Make sure you have all car tags, inspections, insurance current for at least the next month! Make sure your car is in good working order - get oil changed, tires/belts/hoses checked before the trip.

Make sure family/friends know where you'll be and can contact you. Have regular times/points of contact (preferably daily) and keep up with it so if something happens to you, someone knows you're missing and has info to report!

    *******************

    Once here:

Get licensed in city of Phoenix immediately. Costs $25 and a few minutes at City Hall.

Try out ALL the top clubs, not just 1 or 2. Give each one at least a couple days to see how you do. The top clubs here are all so different - you'll be selling yourself short if you don't give them all a chance. (Skin isn't all that IMO.)

Work 5 days/week - don't just sit in the hotel room or make too many friends to party with right away. This will not only allow you to get a better idea what the clubs are really like and what days/shifts you do best on, but give you more opportunity to make a profit over your trip/moving expenses.

Drive around the neighborhoods and see what you like, check rental ads to get ideas on housing costs, go see some apts. Check out Phoenix (north and east), Scottsdale, Tempe and Chandler at least.

Unless you REALLY hate it, give yourself a month of working and checking things out before deciding whether to permanently move or not.

    ***************************

If you decide to move here permanently:

Get your apt rented and move from the hotel to the new place first.

If you have alot of furniture at home that isn't really valuable/expensive, sell off everything and just bring the rest of the small stuff. This way you can save on rental truck expenses and get furniture that fits whatever home you get here. 9 times out 10, unless you've got some really nice stuff the furniture isn't worth moving across several states - either in hassle or expense.

To move the small stuff, you can either ship it in boxes (maybe a family member can do it if you pay for it) or drive back for a visit and haul it in your car. Which is best depends on whether you want to go back home to visit and which is most cost effective. A 50 lb box costs around $60 to ship with post office - that's about the cheapest way.

Buying new furniture: If you don't mind driving around to people's homes looking for bargains, the best deals to be had are found in old ladies' homes. Their furniture is always practically new and often being sold quite cheap. I have always furnished my living rooms nicely for under $500 including sofa/chair/tables/lamps - slipcovers work great if you find a quality piece of furniture that's just the wrong color. You can rent a truck or offer to pay a bouncer at work a few bucks to help you move it if necessary.

Check around for the best cable/phone/internet service deals. Check with Cox and Qwest at least.

    ****************************

    Initial trip packing list:

    1. warm clothes - long sleeves, jacket/coat, pants. It's colder here than you think this time of year.
    2. enough toiletries for a couple weeks
    3. proper ID - driver license and social security card
    4. emergency ID with emergency contact names/numbers to keep on you at all times
    5. vehicle registration/license/insurance info - if you're coming up for renewal soon, have the necessary items for that
    6. work stuff - at least one gown, dress, two-piece - when in doubt, bring extra. shoes/boots
    7. cellphone with plenty of minutes and car charger
    8. computer - you can take it in the car
    9. ENOUGH MONEY
    10. basic car stuff - jumper cables, extra gas container, spare/jack/tire tools. AAA membership also comes in REAL handy in case of car trouble.
    11. Address, phone, directions to Phx city hall for the license.

Sorry this is so long but moving across country is a big deal. Don't forget to PM some of us Phx girls to chat/meet up if ya want!

    Everything Bridgette said, plus...

If you rent a Uhaul trailer, you get a month of free storage when you get there. After a month if you don't like it there, get a new Uhaul trailer and take your stuff someplace else. If you can pull the trailer, it's not actually that expensive to rent it.

Expect some culture shock. My experience in rural OH/PA is that people are all basically the same and about 20 years behind the rest of the world. In AZ people are much more diverse.

Just bring all your things cause if your comming from Ohio your not gonna go back. I can almost promise you that. I left for 6 years and I couldnt wait to get back home. Tucson or PHX is the only places I would live though.

Yeah, Susan's U-haul trailer suggestion is also great. If you have a car that can pull a small trailer, get like 4x8 and haul it. Your trip will take longer cuz you'll have to drive slower and more carefully pulling a trailer, but you'll have all your stuff with you. One month free storage is great. Only downside is, furniture moving is a pain in the ass.

If you don't have a hitch on your car, you can get a class 1 hitch on most cars that will qualify you to haul a 4x8 trailer. Cost about $120 from U-haul, and they'll install it for you too.

    has anyone heard of PODS?

i guess they send a big storage box over to your house the size of a uhaul, and you load it up. they then can store it and ship it out to you whenever you want them to. i think thats the best idea.

Pods are cool. When we left Ct for Az we were gonna get one but then decided to say fuck it and sell EVERYTHING but our clothes and haul balls.

PODS is a very nice idea, but they are horribly expensive. We did a price quote with them for the move from RI to here (TN), and it was about $4000. Not worth it if you ask me.. You box up the stuff yourself, pack it in those pod things, and you unpack it yourself. The only thing they do is pick it up, drive it, and drop it off. You're way better off with a moving truck if you're going to do a full move. But do NOT go with Uhaul. They'll bend you over and severely screw ya up the pooper on the day of your move. Ugh. They delayed us by a day, because they didn't have the tow dolly for the car, even though we had the reservations for TWO MONTHS.

We're thinking of heading West in the next year or so. It's looking like it'll be AZ too, but we're thinking about Vegas too. Hubby's got family out there.

Good luck with your move! B had some great advice. She'd be the first person I'd ask for information about the move and the area. She's a moving guru. That girl's always going somewhere, it rocks.

Oh shaddup you.. LOL.. We're seriously thinking about it. We're halfway there anyway (well, halfway from RI that is). Oooh.. I was checking out rental houses there today.. A house on my old street is up for rent! I'm looking into it for shits and giggles. We won't really be able to move until our lease is up in April, but it doesn't hurt to look a bit before then.

I'll get there, Pappy. Just you wait!

Ok I lived in Tucson and Pheonix and I hayed them both Iam originally from NY, Hade to leave ASAP and get back to the East Coast. Just be sure it is what you want, it is a total different world on the West coast. But good luck you might like it. The clubs are pretty good there and it is pretty easy to get your license. It is a hustling scene.

When I was getting ready to go back to NC from Tucson to go to school it was gonna cost me $1200 for a Uhaul Truck and a full car trailer. The good thing about Uhaul is the unlimited miles. They give you a certain amount of days which was 8 for me. Then If you have another car like I did you can ship that for under $1000. Other moving trucks charge you by the mile which sucks IMO.

*Edit* Go to UHAULS website and price your move. You can even reserve your stuff.

^^Like I said earlier, 9 times out of 10 the furniture isn't worth the hassle or expense of hauling it across country. Unless it's really valuable, I'd sell it off and just bring the clothes and personal stuff. When I move I'll usually bring the TV, bedlinens/pillows, towels, computer, stereo on top of the clothes, pics and such. I bring what I'll need with me for a month, then ship the rest once I get an apt. It's always been the most cost-effective way for me.

Renting a truck will cost you $1k or more, plus a WHOLE LOT of gas to drive it here, plus food and hotel expenses for the trip - by that time you've probably spent more than the stuff is worth - assuming you have a 1BR apt worth of furniture.

IMO pods and other moving services are only worth it for cross-country moves if your stuff is very expensive and/or you're moving a whole family. Truck rental is really only worth it if, again, you're moving a family with alot of furniture.

If I paid $4k for my livingroom set and another $3-4k for the bedroom (less than intelligent IMO) set, I imagine I'd want to take it with me and would be willing to shell out for it. Otherwise, sell it and use the cash to put toward new stuff. Besides, new stuff is fun!

Just keep in mind girls - when you all flood the clubs here in AZ, it will become just like working in any other flooded market. Too many girls, not enough custies, custies expecting more and more bang for the buck. This is not the Stripper Promised Land - there is no such thing.

bridgette, that is in part a major reason i have mostly abandoned the idea of travelling to work. i know of a one-way contact club with excellent earnings potential and i just haven't got any reason to go anywhere else. i never thought houston would offer anything like that, but it exists and since i have it locally, no need to hunt it down anywhere else. although it would be cool one of these days to work super-upscale elsewhere just to try it.

I stupidly did NOT pack light TWICE.

Once I moved to LA... was visiting and decided to sign a lease... needless to say 10 months later I owe the apt complex $4k for breaking the lease.

Second - just a couple months ago... moved to Hawaii - gave away most of my stuff (thank G-d last minute I put all my main furniture in storage (couch, armoire, bdrm set) because 6 weeks later I moved right back to where I came from...

I thought about moving to AZ once... dont think Ill do it tho...

Haha! Yeah, you can reserve all you want to. It won't guarantee you dick with them. As I've mentioned before, when we moved from RI to here in TN, we used Uhaul despite all the warnings not to. We reserved TWO MONTHS in advance, for a truck and a tow dolly. Moving day came, we picked up the truck---No tow dolly. The guy told us to sit tight at home and he'd call us in an hour or two when one of them were returned. I ended up calling THEM about FOUR hours later, to find that there were NO tow dollies in the state of RI. They didn't even call to let us know. Long story short, we were thrown off-schedule a day and had to pick up the tow dolly when we drove through Groton, CT the next day, since that location had already closed. That meant gas for the truck AND for the car.

SHOP AROUND! Save Uhaul for the absolute LAST RESORT. Or, end up being bent over and rammed severely on the day of your move, like we were.

My advice---Steer clear of Uhaul altogether.

If you're gonna use U-haul, if you reserve online, you still have to call the location you plan to rent from and confirm the reservation in person. Otherwise you may not have ANY equipment ready on moving day. They do kinda suck.
