    Default Help

    Hi,
I go to Miami University, and I am doing a paper on the culture of exotic dancing, and I was wondering if anyone would mind answering some questions. The questions would just be about the profession of dancing and experiences you've had, and how you feel about your job.

    Thanks!

I wouldn't mind.... I've answered all the surveys posted on here recently, so why stop now... lol.... I'm a student too and I'm interested in writing a paper on the psychology involved in exotic dancing, but I just haven't had a chance to do it yet.... so yeah I'll answer your survey as long as your paper isn't meant to make dancers look bad or like drug addicts on welfare.... are u a dancer yourself?

No I am not a stripper, but I went to a strip club for a friends bday and talked to some of the girls, and realized how down to earth and "real" they are. Before I had gone I somehow thought that the girls dancing weren't like me. However after I talking to them I realized how much I had in common with them. I just want to show in my paper how stripping shouldn't have this negative connotation that society puts on it. So feel free to answer or not answer as many of the questions that I posted. And if you feel like answering your own questions, or tell some story about the misconceptions of stripping, go for it. Thanks again!

    How long have you danced?
    What made you start?
Is it ever emotionally straining? If so, how?
Is there a comradery between the dancers?
What is the best aspect of your job? Whats the worst?
What kind of guys visit the clubs the most?
Have you ever dealt with the negative stereotypes of being a stripper? And if so how did you deal with it?
You said you were a student as well, what are you majoring in?

I have been dancing for a year.
I started because I was looking for a new job because I hated the job I was working at at the time, and one of my college friends recommended dancing to me because she does it and she really liked it.
It can be emotionally straining. Some nights after work I am more mentally tired than physically tired. It may seem easy to sit at the bar talking to guys all night, but a lot of the conversations are just the same conversation, different customer, which gets very boring. You also have to try to stay enthusiastic and upbeat all night, because you won't make money if you look like a crabass.
The dancers at the club I work at are all very close and we don't look at each other as competition, but as friends. We all get along, and plan fun stuff to do outside of work. We've all gone bowling together, we go out to eat once in a while, and other stuff like that. We all help each other out. We are a small club, with usually 4-8 dancers working each night, so it's easy for us all to be friends. I don't know if this is the same for bigger clubs that have dozens of girls working each night.
The things I like most about my job are that I can set my own schedule, which is great since I'm in school I can schedule work around my classes, tests, and papers. I also like the fact that my work environment is very relaxed and fun. I can goof around and joke around with customers and other dancers while I'm working, which makes the time go really fast. The money is also pretty good, but there are nights that I've left with less than minimum wage. A lot of people think that strippers make hundreds or thousands of dollars every night, which just isn't true. It can be very good money, but not every night, and not in every club.
I don't like guys always trying to grab me, lick me, and other stuff like that. Some customers seem to think that since I'm a stripper, I'm also a whore, which isn't true.
We get a lot of different guys in my club, but the majority are white middle-aged men who are middle class. We mostly only get younger customers in on the weekends, and the older guys on weeknights.
A lot of people have this idea that strippers are all single mothers with tons of kids and tons of fathers to go with those kids, are drug addicts and prostitutes, and have no education. This isn't true. While I'm sure there are dancers who fit those stereotypes, the majority of dancers are just regular women making a living. This is a job like any other. I mostly deal with the stereotypes when I am actually at work and customers ask me why I'm dancing. I hear all the time that I'm "too pretty" to be doing this, and that I could find a better job. You'd be surprised how many customers that come into the club have the stereotype us. I constantly find myself having to say that I'm a college student, that I like my job (which I do).
I already have my associate's degree in psychology, and I'm a junior at a 4-year university in Wisconsin going for a double major in psychology and human development, and a minor in political science (just because I find it interesting, even though it has nothing to do with my major)

Hope I could help and if you have any more questions just let me know. I also answered 2 other surveys on here within the past few days, so you can always look at my answers to those surveys too.
