Angry my skin is confused (kinda long...)

Okay, so I've had acne since 5th grade and been on like every single OTC and prescribed medicine/cream (including accutane) that exists (i'm pretty sure of this...recently my derm almost prescribed an antibiotic i've already been on, so he had to think about something else LMAO!)...so now I'm pretty cleared up except for a few painful pimples here and there and red surface scarring (nothing deep like pits or anything)...and I've had extremely oily facial skin my entire life. But this is where it gets tricky for me...after I was on accutane, which changes how much oil your sebaceous glands produce (i think?), i'm much drier overall but still oily...and at the moment i'm on an antibiotic, a cream in the morning, and Tretinoin gel at night (the generic form of Retin-A)....all of this dries out my skin and after i wash my face it feels so tight, and i wake up in the morning with my skin kinda dry and peely looking. It's disgusting, it's like i have dandruff of the face. ANYWAY, since my skin gets dry but is oily during the day, and i have to apply the products to my face, should i still moisturize? Sometimes I'll skip the cream and gel and use Kiehl's oil free sodium PCA moisturizer....but can i use it under/over the products? and i'm getting fine lines around my eyes (i'm only 19!)...which i think is due to the crap i've put my skin through over the years (and i was a swimmer my whole life, so the chlorine probably did some damage)....so i guess my main question is, should i moisturize even tho i get oily? how often, and what should i use? AAHHHHH i'm so confused, i don't wanna make it even more moist than it is lol! but i'm afraid if it gets too dry i'll get wrinkles soon....bleh. thanks!

I have the same problem, oily skin and slight acne. I wish I could help, but I'm having trouble finding things that work for myself...

ugh i hate it...my whole life i've gotten all the drying products, all the acne face washes and stuff, but now i'm trying to figure out what will keep it dry but not TOO dry....and moist but not TOO moist...etc. For face wash i use Cetaphil for normal to oily skin.

I have the same problem, and I love Proactiv.

I used Proactive for a while and it worked really well, but now I use the generic brand of Proactive called Acne Free. I buy it at walmart for like $20 and it works just as well... My skin got really dry for the first few days, but now my skin is totally clear.... and not dry at all

    You haaaaaaaaave to moisturize!
That being said, it doesn't have to be an "heavy" moisturizer...but your face when its dry will compensate for that dryness by, yep you guessed it, boosting oil production.
A nice light one I use is Kiss My Face Peaches and Cream Alpha Hydroxy Moisturizer...it's light, all natural, and not irritating and you can get it at any health food store. That sucks about the acne, it can be really frustrating...mine was always slight to moderate, but I was able to majorly control it with clindamycin and birth control pills.
I know it's redundant but make sure you get a good variation of fruits and vegetables in your diet and drink TONS of water, moreso you than most people to compensate for the acne meds...trust me.
Have you ever been tested to see if food allergies are the culprit? A lot of the times when traditional acne medications just aren't doing the job, change in diet can help a lot. Anyways hope this helps, good luck sweetie!

I use Biore Pore Perfect Shine Control moisturizer. It's really light and doesn't make your skin oily or greasy looking.

Try removing white sugar and white flour from your diet. Seriously.

My skin was just like yours. I tried EVERYTHING to get rid of the acne. I also thought it must be genetic, but being adoped, I have no way to know for sure.

Diet was the only thing that really helped. Now my skin is almost clear. (I went a little crazy on vacation.)

Water will help cleanse your entire body, so that there won't be so much crap to push out through your pores. It will also (i think) keep your natural skin secretions thinner and less gunky, so they will not clog up your pores so bad. Coffee dehydrates you and has the opposite effect of water. It also makes you produce the stress hormone cortisol, which contributes to acne and enlarged pores. Try switching to tea instaed.

Also, you may be alergic to something in most products. I used to have really bad reactions to certain things. FOr example, I absolutely cannot use Oil of Olay products or most OTC cosmetics. I order everything from Melaleuca International. PM me if you want more info on that.

Water is just all round goodness for your entire body. The new water intake guide is half your body weight in ounces. So, if you're 120 lbs, you'd need to drink 60ozs of water per day.

Back to the original question, hydration is important for healthy skin. Keihl's oil free is a nice moisturizer. If you're using it with a retinoid, wait 20 min after applying rx before applying moisturizer. Sunscreen during the day since any chemical exfoliation product will make you photosensitive.

You can usually use your prescribed stuff UNDER a moisturizer. I would probably cleanse, apply the medicine, wait 5 or 10 mins and PAT on a small amount of moisturizer.

The water is a really good idea and try to cut down on the caffine if you can. It acts as a diuretic which dehydrates your skin/body.

It sounds like you are doing an awful lot to your skin and that can keep it irritated and broken out. I'm sure the doctor knows what is best for you though.

I had some skin problems that were mild but annoying and when i started using bare minerals makeup they all went away. Go figure.

    Good luck with this!

I stopped getting new zits almost immediately. It took a little time for the ones I already had to dry up. I still dick around a lot with sugar, b/c I LOVE chocolate. But it seems like the flour was the major problem, so cutting that out made a huge change for me. I

Take a capsule of Vitamin E and rub that around the lines you are talking about. Put that on at night. It helps smooth out things.

Yep, seriously, it works. Your intestinal tract plays a huge part in whether or not you have acne. White flour and sugar are super processed so they kill the healthy bacteria in your int. tract.

For every coffee you drink, you need to drink two MORE glasses of water...it's a diuretic.
Do you put sugar, sweetener, milk, or the evil (stuff that I love) flavored creamers? THOSE can be messing up your skin too if you use a lot of them. <---I know it's tough but your answer might be right there.

Up your water intake, majorly, to compensate for the coffee and the meds and see what happens, good luck darlin!

Has your derm also mentioned for you to try going to the tanning bed?

A guy I went to school with had extremly bad acne too, and his derm told him to try tanning and with his meds, it really worked.

The tanning plus water, and meds had him cleared up in 5 or 6 months completly. He looked like a brand new man, lol. And all the girls went crazy for him.

Story of my life. I thought Accutane would take all my problems away. It away most, but not all.

I cut out caffeine and liquor. No more carbonated beverages as well. My skin is much better. I tan when I get a big pimple. I use Retin-A every other or every 3rd night and moisturize with Aloe Vera gel the other nights.

You need moisture! If your skin gets too dry, you will produce more oil than necessary and will get pimples! Drink water, lots of it. Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer during the day.

Anyway, about the acne, I feel you.

    I also sympathize.

I'm using a nice moisturizer from Pacifica right now, http://www.pacificanaturalskincare.c...ense-cream.asp - it's very light.

I use Acne Free from walmart too. The trick is you have to rub the repair lotion in until it disappears, and use moisturizer.

It will, and once your skin calms down and heals a bit more if you are still having trouble with scarring, try a peel facial or microdermabrasion maybe?
