    Default Burlesque School

I am thinking of offering training to exotic dancers who also wish to learn burlesque performances. I was thinking of offering the lessons at no charge, but requiring that the student commit to 4 or 5 performances that will be paid (we usually make $300-400 per performance per dancer) in exchange for the lessons.

If the dancer wishes to continue to join us for performances after her original performances are complete, she would be welcome to do so.

Most performance schools culminate in "recitals" anyhow, and are required to complete the class and recieve a grade. So I thought the fact that the dancer can also make some cash would be a bonus, as well as learning a new way to perform.

    In a heartbeat!

But... how much travel will be involved? After this summer, I'll be very mobile and would love to be involved in something like this, especially if it could all be done in one trip (even if it were a long trip!).

After I graduate college in Dec. of 2006, I would love an opportunity like this. I plan to take time after college to travel and get into performing wherever i can. I think your idea is great and very generous to the people who wish to perform and get into this artform.

I would totally be interested in this. Would you be doing the training in or around Oregon? I also don't mind traveling so I think it would be an awesome opportunity.

Whilst the lessons would not be charged....how much would the dancer REALLY receive each performance (since you would naturally be taking a 'cut' from those initial performances to be pre-paid for the training) ? Also, what about costumes ? Would the dancer have to have a certain amount of $$ set aside so she can afford (at least) one Burlesque costume or do you have a 'wardrobe' that you are willing to 'hire' to the student for a fee or free ?

I don't really know a whole lot about. I've always had the preconceived notion that it was geared more towards larger women, which would be right up my alley.

This is a great question! I will have to think about this and get back to you.

I think traveling is inevitable for these kind of shows. It is difficult to think about doing the same choerographed show more than once in a single location, but the travel doesn't have to be extensive, just like a week at a time and then the dancers can have a break to work at clubs or on new ideas.

I am shooting for the dancer to get paid $200 each per show plus tips, plus photo sales, plus a percentage of merchandise sales. I would make the customer pay a booking fee in addition to the dancer's fees, so that the dancer doesn't have to pay a cut to the booking agent. Also the customer (bar, nightclub, casino etc.) would also be responsible for providing hotel rooms for the dancers (two dancers per room).

I really hate that I have to pay for the privedlege to work as a stripper in just about every club I've ever danced in, so I would have a strict policy that the dancers don't ever have to pay a performance fee.

Keep the questions coming! I'm sure there is lots that I haven't thought about yet. I really appreciate all the feedback.

re:^, would you be aiming for already-stripper students, or would you be introducing the majority of your students to the world of body-part-showing?

The latter might be tough, but then again I'm sure there's a market for hand-holding through the early stages of becoming a stripper. Is that a service you want to provide, or do you want ot focus mostly on the technical aspects of the show?

I was thinking girls (or guys, can't rule them out in burlesque!) that are either:
    a. Already stripping or

    b. are already dance students that are okay with body-part-showing but aren't comfortable with the raunchy nature of most strip clubs.

I'm not much interested in teaching the uninitiated to strip. They can either step up to the plate at the clubs in their area, or attend any of the many dancer schools out there like Dancer Wealth or the feature schools that work with porn stars who wish to feature.

My original question in re: costumes (outfits) still hasn't been answered.. just a friendly reminder Thanks for answering my other question!

Naturally, I'm assuming that you would rather take on US citizens only (or those with the proper work visa). Would the burlesque performer require any additional paperwork so she can work (like sherriff cards and what not) ??

Jenny: I'm in Eugene, Oregon. Portland would be a more centrally located place for the school, though. My mom lives up there and would be happy to let me stay at her place while I'm working (I do that all the time).

Goldcoastgirl: I thought about the costume issue. I am not interested in having costumes become very expensive. If the dancer herself wants to spend hundreds on a special costume that is custom made, that is up to her. One of the numbers I am working on, all the dancers dress as street hookers. The costumes can probably be made out of items that most dancers already have, like a short-short skirt, a see-through shirt, a bikini top under the shirt, and fishnet stockings and garter. Nothing too complicated, yet the look is totally stunning when you have 5 performers who are co-ordinated.

*On the point of being foreign, I am not worried about it if you do not have the right work permits and the like. We all get paid cash, so there is no paper trail. We aren't working at "stripclubs" so the dancers won't need to get cabaret licenses to dance (sheriff card). If you wish to send you dance items ahead, I would be happy to recieve them for you so you don't have to check them as baggage on an airplane. I think UPS or FedEx also offers airport pickup of shipped items.

Venusofwillendorf: Location of the school? Probably in or around Portland, Oregon. I may also take the training on the road if I can get bookings for the dancers in their region.

Okay, since I've had such good responses I think it might be time to sit down and write up a plan of action, now. Also keep the questions and concerns coming. Most particularly the concerns! It is always better to think of and address a problem before it actually happens!

I would love to do it! I am very interested in burlesque. One was in town over the summer and I talked to the girls about it, and they literally wanted to take me with them on the tour (they had just lost two girls) but I declined because the payment was horriblely low. Keep us posted on your specific plans!
