    Default the problem with heels...

    Hello all,
I am a dancer who, like many, suffers from several henriated disks and hip problems. I understand that heels are sexier and seem to be required in all clubs, but for the sake of my health and future of my back I am going to have to quit the shoes.

The thing that pisses me off is, yeah, if I want to wear flats, I should have the right, right? Well, these club managers think that they have the right to refuse us in if we do not comply with the shoes...but I am paying them house fee aren't I, I am bringing in business aren't I? I am wanting to wear flat shoes, not asking to walk around covered in mudd and smelling like last weeks garbage.

inSan fransisco the women have formed a union and are now not only receving min. wage, but don't pay house fees, as it is illegal to force employees to pay them.
    check this out.........

If any of you have experienced a sim. problem with the shoes, respond. or if you have advice, please! thanks

Try some other clubs--mine is flexible on the height of shoes. One girl wears regular pointed toe heels--like 1". They look really sexy on her. I have seen other girls wearing the light up 1"-2" shoes from Walmart. Ulitmately the owners and managers have control over little things like this and considering what we are able to earn at this job, it really isn't worth it to me to piss them off by complaining.

Also, you could try platform shoes--they would elevate you the required number of inches, but would be flat and maybe better for your body?

I don't actually have any health problem that relates to heels, I just hate them - I am about comfort not style and yes definatly we should have the right to wear whatever we please!
I have almost always worked in clubs that are flexible about footwear thank goodness. My current club has a stiletto rule, but I am excepted. On my first night I there I could not adjust to wearing stripper shoes and demonstrated how much better off I was in regular shoes, I guess I also look different to all of the other dancers so it works out ok. The height of my heels is about an inch, though I do prefur a platform sole if you know what I mean - as a general rule of thumb I wont wear anything I can't run fast and jump in. That the height of my shoes has no relevance to my earnings what-so-ever! I have wondered how it came about that stripper shoes became standard stripper shoes for everyone!

You listed your problem... YES they can have a dress code if theyre paying YOU.. just like McDonalds and Starbucks... YOU asked for it.

AND you just contradicted yourself... are you paying THEM or are THEY PAYING YOU?

    dear audrey leigh,

for your info. i work in TEXAS, a very conservative state, where you pay house fees and house mom and dj, bouncers.....you know the works...I was referring to the exotic dancers alliance in san fransisco as landmark for exotic dancer's rights and was insinuating how wonderful it would be if we all put some effort into achieving this in our home states.......

of course IF they were paying me a wage, i would understand about dress code (shoes for that matter), but even then , under the federal disability act, no person should be denied employment based on disability, including as cheesy at it may sound to some, having back problems not being able to walk around in stilettos..
hope this cleared things out a bit

Find another club. I know there lots of clubs out there that dont care what type of heel you wear. Or worse comes to worse, start waitressing, bartending.. just find another job. Not everyone can strip for life.
Also no way would I ever want to have stripping become unionised. The bible thumpers would get to the job even more so. Also I work hard for my money im not letting union fees eat it all away. Plus I like picking my hours and pretty much being my own boss. I have a family member who is a major rep for a canadian union I know the BS you put up with in unions. No thank you!

Do you have any workplace health and safety laws / rights in your state dancersrights? It could be worth looking into if you do come across problems. I don't think anyone should be dictating what shoes you wear regardless of who's paying who - it's your feet!

The casino cocktail servers in Nevada did something like this a few years ago--

Here's a link to an article about it.

As I recall, they weren't successful in getting legislation passed, but as a result of their efforts, most of the casinos stopped enforcing the heel requirement of the dress code.

That stinks...but were I in your position, I'd just find another club (maybe easier said than done, as I don't know what your options are). I've seen girls dance in all kinds of shoes, from the standard platforms to Ugg boots! I agree that the management is being ridiculous, but it's probably easier to just move on than to make a stink about it...

Good luck with whatever you choose to do!

OK - you mentioned nothing of working in TX... your siggy doesnt say your location either... so, when you mention SF Im to assume thats where you live.

Anywho - some clubs have requirements and some dont and even tho youre not technically an employee they can still fire you for not following their rules... which I know, is BS... kinda like how some clubs are gown clubs... you dont wear a gown you dont work. Not fair, I know... Id say find somewhere else to work... just like everyone else...

OR you can get a shoe with a smaller arch but still has a heel? (If its not the elevation thats hurting) Mine are 71/2 inch heel but have a 4 inch platform which means Im only wearing a shoe with a 3.5 inch arch... Im sure there are stripper shoes out there that have even smaller arches? So that technically youre still wearing a heel but not killing your feet, legs, knees... etc...
