    Default Ritalin?

I was wondering if any of you have tried this drug. In your opinion, would it enhance studying/ taking exams for a person who is not affected with ADD?
Are there any other type of drugs that would enhance brain function? I know Omega oils help but I'm wondering about pharmaceuticals.

Sure, amphetamines (which ritalin is one of) are known to have that effect. Dexedrine, adderall, same thing. Ritalin is apparently weaker but also causes headaches in a lot of people, so if you haven't taken it before, DON'T make a night of studying rest on it -- heck, that goes for any pharmaceutical. Everyone reacts differently.

If you want to get something similar in effects that is cheap and legal, buy some ephedrine online. I've always liked that stuff better than official ADD meds (and I have ADD so I should know! I usually self-medicate by drinking less coffee right before something I have to do, then more coffee at the time of. Ephedra when that won't work.)

Don't overdo it, but a few days of use at normal doses is unlikely to hurt you unless you have a heart defect. There's a thread about it right now.

Omega 3 oils, yes, and also if you're not taking your B vitamins (in a b-50 or b-100 complex) start now.

I took ritalin. It gave me severe migrains. Also, I've heard it has been thought to set off bi- polar disorder in people prone to it. But thats probably after long term use. I'd suggest you try something else. I'm sad to say that I havn't found anything that works. Also, I ended up not eligable for health insurance for a five year period because of being on it. My old insurance ended, I applied for new, and was denied because of having taken ritalin in high school.

Sure it can help you study, but it can also make you want to talk....A LOT -- maybe not the best thing for studying. It can also make you really confident, but it may be super hard to go to sleep afterward and you may feel frustrated or depressed as it wears off. I've taken ADD meds before and I notice it gives me really dry skin the next day my hands look all cracked -- ick. I also notice it makes me want to smoke a lot of cigarettes, which is not good.

I've thought about taking it for studying, but really, I don't need an addiction on top of everything.

I had someone tell me he knew a guy who took it and stayed up and wrote a really great paper for school. I tried taking a pill and it made me almost dopey. My friend who gave it to me (who was a classic case of ADD) told me that meant I need it if I didn't get hyper on it. I almost had more trouble concentrating though and felt spaced out. She said you have to adjust to it. Either way, I don't want to take it so that was it. I just thought maybe taking one pill would help concentration but it didn't, at least not for me. Ritalin may help you... but like others in this thread have said, a lot of it is about a) your own personal chemistry and b) set & setting. For some people, it's not a performance enhancer at all, but can actually impair your ability to work. And of course, you still need the work/study environment that you're comfortable with, as it'll still be hard to focus if you're surrounded by friends or socializing.

If you've never taken an amphetamine or related pharmaceutical before, you should make sure that it's a performance enhancer for you. You don't want to be caught 6 hours before a paper is due with a completely non-functional brain.

I took both Ritalin and Dexadrine when I was in college to help my performance. The drugs definately helped me remain focused on studying and I was able to study for longer periods of time. Headaches would come if I took too much or if I combined with caffeine and of course if I went too long without sleeping.

I've been on Ritalin since I was 4 years old and I am now 20. I have ADHD and would not have gotten through all of my school years without it. I personally have benefitted from it immensely but I have heard that it varies from person to person
