    Default inspirational and positive quotes.

There is some obnoxious religious fanatic sending messeges to a lot of my friends and I about how gay and lesbian marriage is wrong, abortion is murder, etc. I've known some crazy southern babtists in the past, and I know they feel "it is their duty to spread the word."

What I am hoping to do is explain to this girl ( with examples of positive quotes) that you get more flies with honey or sugar than with vinager. I'm hoping to get through to her that people are more willing to submit to positive reinforcements, and that her negeative comments may be pushing people away.

I'm hopeing that she will listen to the argument that anger causes many bad reactions and is a main tool of the Devil, and may force people away from christianity. She should shed a positive light on religion and drop this fire and brimstone act if she wants people to accept Jesus. I am not particularly religious myself, though I do believe in God. I'm just tired of this chick shoving this crap down peoples throats.

I'm looking for positive quotes and where they can be found in the bible so that I can have a good collection of information to show her I'm not trying to silence her beliefs in Jesus, only help her to get people to actually listen and care.

The entire Song of Songs (Song of Solomon, in the Christian Bible) is a beautiful ode to eroticism. Granted it does speak of a monogamous love relationship, but it's definitely pro-sex. I don't know what to tell a fundamentalist anti-sex Christian, other than "go fuck yourself."

Seriously, people like that are best just ignored.

    Hey, if it works...

Fawn, there's nothing you can do about it. There's no combating that kind of programming. Some people think "turn or burn" is a good tactics to get converts, truth it it doesn't work on any but the most gullible people (or people leaning that way in the first place).

You can hit her with this little nugget from Matthew spoken by none other than the bossman himself.... "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." Matthew 6:5-6

I agree with Jesus, these jokers should pray in their closets rather than annoy the rest of us with their "look how holy i am" dog-and-pony-show bullshit.

Here's a couple other good ones. just don't expect them to have any effect...

"And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." Matthew 7:3-5 In other words, avoid hypocrisy. Consider your own faults rather than criticizing others. These fire and brimstone types should teally read their own books.

"Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again." Luke 6:37-38 The Christian right should pay more attention to this verse.

"There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?" James 4:12

Hit her with those, but expect them to bounce off. These types are good as selective interpretation.

While I've long believed in that proverb, stop explaining and start living by example. You're much more effective in communicating ideas and behaviors when you can't be viewed as proselytizing or evangelizing.

    Two cents.

What pisses me off the most about these stupid fundamentalists is how selectively they choose to interpret parts of the Bible literally. There are parts of the Bible that say a man should never touch a woman and that we should not eat meat with other foods. It just burns me up. besides in the original language of the bible there was no word for homosexual, the bible sold in stores is a translation and like all translations it's not completely accurate. the bible has been translated an ungodly amount of times, most of those times the version accepted was from a tyrant ruler trying to further an agenda. Translations of translations. it's a little like playing telephone--the original message gets lost as it's passed from ear to ear. the current translation also has passages that say slavery, genocide, and sexism are acceptable.

i dunno. i have a prejudice towards fundamental christians. i honestly believe they are below average in intelligence. i have quite a few friends who are liberal christians. they seem much more willing to interpret the text knowing it's been grossly distorted over the past 2000 + years.

    So RIGHT ON Confession...

I dont think the bible is something youre supposed to shove down peoples throats and scare people into following... seems like an oxymoron... Its supposed to be a happy thing but some people just take it way overboard.

It's not even worth wasting time on...a religious zealot won't listen to a "dark-sided" point of view.

Thank you to Madcap for posting one of my ATF Bible quotes (mote vs. plank.) from Matthew.

Another favorite is from Ecclestiates ( <sp?) "...the daughters of music shall be brought low." I didn't understand it until later in life. It means (IMO) that to know the true joy of love & unity, you must accept you are part of something Bigger in life.

There is lots of good (and whack) in the Bible. And there are plenty of Christians who figure out it's a waste of time ATTEMPTING to force others to think the same way. The shrill ones who do the finger-pointing are often masking serious sinning flaws of their own (Jimmy Swaggart, for one...cleverly parlaying guilty tears into Televangelic TV ratings..ugh.)

I know it won't help in this circumstance, but I always used to argue that
leviticus 18:22 (thou shall not lie with mankind as with womankind: it is an abomination)
was pretty much a bibilical blessing of my being a lesbian. Really tended to set off your average pentacostal.

My favorite is this one... "Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, and went in unto her." Judges 16:1

Those types slay me. The ones screaming the loudest about the need to be saved often have the most to be saved from. I once knew one guy that wound up getting drug off a bus by cops because he got up and started preaching and wouldn't stop no matter who told him to calm down. Talk about a captive audience.

The only clear mention of Lesbianism in the entire bible is by Paul in Romans 1:26-27. But then paul was a ranting lunatic and pretty much hijacked christianity. Talk about ruining a good thing. Just about all the nutzy intolerant shit from the new testament comes from Paul.

Hey, good point about the harlot. She was Rahab, the gentile prostitute who helped ancient Israel capture Canaan. She has always been widely esteemed as righteous, and she married Joshua, who succeeded Moses as the leader. She is also a direct ancestor of Jesus, according to the Christian tradition. So there!

Thanks for the examples. I'm also looking for ones about love and unity, not just defending other peoples way of life. I realize she's not going to stop pestering people, I am just hoping to replace the negative with something positive like "love thy neighbor" or something people could actually be helped by, like something comforting in hard times.

If she's going to go around with this attitude that she has to spread the word to anyone that will listen, I at least want to give her something positive to talk about, so maybe she'll actually help and comfort someone. There was one someone told me when my brother died, something about the dead living on... I don't really remember, but I think it was from john or something.

I've never actually read the bible, only skimmed through it out of curiosity. But that quote, whatever it was, helped me feel a little better. Thats the kind of stuff I'm looking to give her to talk about, 'cause God only knows she's gotta run her mouth about something. So, if anyone has any good positive quotes, about loving and nurturing things, or things that may ease a loved ones distress, not defensive quotes defending the way people live ( which she wouldn't listen to any way), please post them.
    Thanks

Although I'm not a practicing Christian, I do believe that the Bible, and particularly the Gospels, has much to teach any human being, whether they are a faithful believer in the divine source of it or not. Maxine can probably help out here with the citation (I believe Mathew), but my paraphrasing of it is "Above all else I command you to love one another."

Of the Old T, I've heard it argued that the Book of Ruth is fundamentally about Lesbian love, and the sacrifices of Ruth to form a family and have children, despite her true love for another woman. Ruth professes her deep love for Naomi, her mother-in-law, not as family, but much deeper, in the following passage: (Ruth:16-17)
    16
And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God:
    17
Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.

Seems like I've heard "until death do us part" before....

Fawn, here are a few. I tend to stick to the gospels themselves when i quote this shit for fundies, since they are supposedly the keystone to christian thought (Though often I think these people are followers of Paul rather than Jesus, since Paul contradicts a lot of this in hos rantings and that's who a lot of them listen to. You can really tell who the real christians are, the ones who listen to Jesus over Paul. It's a shame Paul had to stick his nose in. I especially love it when they insist Men can't have long hair because Paul says not to... Um... The boss had long hair, only Romans cut their hair. No first century Jew would have taken Jesus seriously if he didn't have it, they would have considered him romanized.)

Matthew 5:43-48 Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Matthew 7:12-14 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Matthew 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. (Jesus is quoting Leviticus 19:18 in this one)

Matthew 25:35-40 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Luke 10-30-37 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

John 8:2-11 And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst, They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou? This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not. So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst. When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee? She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

    (NIV bible translation)

    1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
    ...
13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love

Along the lines of your proverb that "you gather more flies with honey...etc...." the following portions omitted above may be more profound than simply a sales technique: (Still 1 Cor 13)

[B]1 If I speak in the tongues[a] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Umm, why do you want people to listen to her if you don't actually subscribe to her beleifs?

At least when people are fanatical and obnoxious they do scare alot of people away! I quite appreciate fanatical religious peoples honesty actually. I like people to be straight to the point no matter how horrible their point is - at least you know where they stand and fairly quickly! What's the point of making her bullshit candy coated if underneath it's still nasty?
