Manual or Automatic ??? Your opinion ??

Okay. Those who have been reading my Diary in re: my 1st car already know all this and I've pretty much asked this in that diary so just answer me there if you desire. Everyone else....

I hold a current automatic driver's lisence. I am currently pursuing manual driving lessons ....and have had one 120min (2hr) hour lesson, one 60min (1hr) lesson and (counting today's lesson) have had five 90min lessons. I have pre-paid for two more 90 min lessons (Wed and Thu).

I have also pretty much pre-paid for the driving exam which was supposed to be this Saturday (17th) however I agree with my driving instructor that I'm no where near ready for it (as I want to do the driving exam when I can feel confident enough to pass first time).

I can also pretty much afford ten more 60min lessons before I hit a wall in re: how much I have put aside to do these lessons. I have spoken with my driving instructor in cutting back to 60min lessons next week onwards.

I'm persuing manual driving lessons not just so I can drive "Bunny" (my 1987 Toyota Corolla)... it's so I can eventually replace "Bunny" with "Herbie" (VW Beetle to which I will add a 53 decal/stripes as well as eventually pimp out ie rims, flashy exhaust, street neon lights, etc)... or even just be able to buy really inexpensive cars (just check ebay.com.au to see what I mean).

Okay.. the question... Do I keep "Bunny" (my 1987 Toyota Corolla which is a manual) and keep with my lessons? If so, do you think I should keep doing 3-4 lessons a week or cut back to 2-3 times a week (and keep trying to see if any friends will be able to be passenger in "Bunny" so I can get more "on the road" time/experience) ?

    OR

Do you think I should just sell "Bunny" (I'll probably get between $1500-2000 for her right now) and take out a small loan (around $4000) to buy an automatic thereby not bothering to get a manual license?

.....and yes I need to pass another driving exam if I want to be legally qualified to drive any manual/stick car within Australia. I only hold an automatic driver's license therefore I can only legally drive automatic.

My Ex Husband tried to teach me how to drive a standard. After about 3 "lessons", he gave up and sent me to a driving school. Hahaha.. We had an automatic after we got married, luckily. But, at the time he tried to teach me he had a kickass jeep, that was a stick. Bleh.

So wait.. You need a separate license for a standard over there? Woah.

If you feel comfortable with keeping up with the lessons, you should. But, I hate standards.

I don't like standards either (that's what I had for my first car- one that was hella hard to drive, too). If you really want to drive the standard car, though, I'd say keep doing the lessons.

Some vehicles are better as a standard,(i.e.sports cars).Whereas, some others are better as an automatic,(i.e.SUV's and trucks).

I say keep up with it. The clutch in imports is generally a lot easier to work with than American Cars, it just takes a bit of practice and patience and before you know it, it's like second nature to you, you don't even think about it.

Personally, I think everyone who drives should be required to learn to drive a stick. I say keep with it, and be glad your getting lessons. The only way I was able to learn was to buy a car with a manual tranny, and stall it for a few days, until I got the hang of 1st gear.

Keep the car, keep going with the lessons... you'll be glad you did.

Owning a standard is cheaper anyway; no transmission filters to replace, far fewer mechanical failures, cheaper sticker prices, et al.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

Errr.. Not to go off topic too much, but why is that? If someone doesn't plan on ever owning or driving a standard, why should they be made to learn how to drive one? Doesn't make sense.

Well, it is a good idea to learn. That way you can drive anything you come across. Can come in handy in a pinch.

I definately know how to handle the type of stick you're probably thinking about... just wish handing the car variety was just as easy!

As for where abouts I am in my lessons, you'd have to pretty much read my diary to see the progress report. I'm at least "getting it" 90% of the time in re: gear changes (going from a stop position at a red light thru the gears) and going round round-a-bouts and such like.

If there were no other cars in the world left, and I could only drive a standard.... I'd ride the bus.

I always drive standards when I have the option. I had two automatics when I was younger and bought what I could afford. For the rest of my cars/van/jeep - standard.

Once it happens - it'll happen. I remember when I started and was having trouble with a standard - I thought I would never get that damn thing to go. Even brought a tear to my eye! But to be honest I don't remember the moment I got it. It seemed like it just happened.

Maybe you are stressing out cuz your like "God! I got to know this! I am gonna be tested on it!" Just take a deep breath and say, "ya know what - I am gonna figure this shit out."

Before ya know it, you will be driving through the bad lands on a big ole road train!

Funny you need a different drivers license for a standard.

Look at it this way, your options are going to be much wider if you know how to drive a standard when it comes to choice of cars and prices of those cars and maintenance costs of those cars.

Well, here in Australia it kinda makes sense to go for your manual license first over an automatic one (even tho' the automatic license is FAR easier to acquire). Why? If you have a manual driver's license you do not need to be qualified (go thru lessons and another driving exam) to drive automatic.

It is only when you are doing as I am doing... you hold an automatic driver's license and want to drive manual that you need lessons and have to re-qualify yourself... so the argument is valid in my opinion.

The ONLY reason I went for my automatic license over manual back when I was 17 (old enough to be eligible for a driver's license) was because I was going to be driving an automatic at the end of it all... and my father bought the lessons... otherwise I would have much preferred to have done my manual license then rather than now.

As my driving instructor has said to me, it is going to take me longer to learn as I'm older now... when I was 17... I would've learnt much quicker and easier to a certain extent.

I don't see why so many people dislike standards. It is no big deal at all once you get the hang of it.Dancing wasn't easy to begin with either.

But but but what if you were stuck in the swamp and the only way out was a monster truck driven by the guy who was just eaten by an alligator and the bugs are just flying in your face and buzzing in your ears and and and everyone else was eaten by a giant python some 13 year old let go of ten years ago because mom said it was to big and you can see a giant wolf twenty feet away pacing back and forth eyeing you up! What would you do then huh! HUH! Tell me!

I prefer a standard....dead battery give a push pop the clutch and GO!!! That is one of many reasons.

But again each have their pros and cons. Go ahead finish getting your manual license!!! You will have it just incase anyway!!

LOL, i got stuck at a bar once because the "designated driver" decided to "undesignate" himself on shots of Tequila. No way was i letting this guy drive at all, much less drive me anywhere. I'd have been FUCKED if i hadn't known how to drive a standard. I'd have been driving my thumb. LOL.

That turned into a pepsi night, much to my annoyance.

I vote for learn the standard for the reasons everybody else has already mentioned. I now drive an automatic, but I'm damn glad I can chirp through the gears if I need to!

It seems that many in the US feel this way... if you go to most other countries you find that the majority drive a stick. In the UK its actually harder to find a school that teaches automatic, nowadays everybody back home drives a manual. I say stick to the manual lessons besides manual cars are cheaper to purchase, cheaper to maintain and save gas.

Perfect example is my mother. My dad had a Honda Del Sol (5-speed), and has some serious medical problems. Anytime he had an issue while working, his car needed to be left in the company parking lot until he was medically cleared to drive again. Had she been able to drive a standard, the car could have been brought home when it was convenient for her to go get it, rather than waiting for my father.
