    Default Knee Injury

    Hey Everyone!

I've been prowling the site for a while, but this is my first post.

I've been looking into becoming a dancer, but I dislocated my left kneecap in early September. I'm supposed to wear a J-brace over my knee to keep it in when I'm doing any serious physical activity but I can walk fine, in high heels even, if they're on well.

Has anyone else had to deal with knee injuries, or injuries in general?

Oh yes! I dealt with a major knee injury in 2003 and 2004. I was on the college dance squad, and I guess I did one too many toe touches or something- I limped around for about a week before I went to the doctor.

They never did figure out exactly what happened to it, and the only options they could offer me were to: 1) Take some pain reducer/anti-inflammatory medication and stay off it for a while or 2) Go in for exploratory surgery.

Obviously I picked the first option, and I was on crutches for about a month. I went back to dancing a couple of months after and messed it up again (not nearly as bad because I quit as soon as it started hurting), and it took me over a year to fully recover.

Point is, be super careful with your knees. I'm only 21, and I can hardly walk up a flight of stairs without my knee bothering me. Don't try to rush into anything too fast- make sure you are really healed up first! Good luck!

A few years back I wrecked my motorcycle. Among other injuries I had a broken arm. Did go back to work though cast and all. At first I tried covering it with costumes, then I realized guys would by more dances (out of sympathy I guess) once they saw I was hurt. Maybe same could work for you. Do be careful though you don't want to further injure yourself.

I had surgery on my right knee in march and went back to work 2 months later, which was too soon because I ended up injuring it again-luckily it didn't require another surgery, just a lot more time off of work. I still have to have surgery on my left knee, so I try to take it easy at work. So yeah, take it easy on your knees as much as possible. I'm only 20, so by the time I'm 21 I'll have 2 knee surgeries under my belt.

If you do dance, stay away from floor work-very hard on your knees. I never leave my feet when I'm on stage. I also try to twirl around more rather than bend my knees or squat down. I try to use my knees as little as possible. One of the girls I work with wears a knee brace once in a while-doesn't seem to affect her money. Guys in the club are too busy looking at the rest of her body to care about how the brace on her knee looks... lol

If you have bad knees, like myself, try to strengthen the surrounding muscles. Once you're able to do leg exercises, work to build up strength/endurance in your quads, hamstrings, and calves. That should help with your knee problems.

alpha_male makes a good point! I too have terrible knees....i guess playing all those sports as a kid really wasn't a good idea! I do try to do some strength training for my knees....easier said than done with me...i'm always forgetting! Also take a multi-vitamin and make sure you're getting enough calcium so that your bones are strong!
