    Default Rock on Austin!

Not to feed into stereotypes - but who expected Texas to lead a resistance to financial domination over schools? If schools AREN'T owned by Pepsi Cola in 6 years props to them:

When St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Austin, Tex., was faced with an ultimatum--pull Annie Proulx's short story "Brokeback Mountain" from its reading list or lose a $3-million donation to its building fund--school officials chose to give up the money. That decision is reverberating far beyond Austin. Writers from around the country have been so inspired by the school's actions that they've formed a group of young adult authors called AS IF! (Authors Supporting Intellectual Freedom).

Austin is a universe unto itself as far as TX is concerned. It like the one that didn't fit with the others in the old Sesame Street song...

So glad to hear that there are young adults in this world who will be able to make their OWN choices as to what they want to read. I'm the type of parent who wanted her kids to read and, if the material was questionable, was available to answer any questions about it after they had read it.

Why is it that these people assume that by banning it from the school library the kids won't get their hands on it? What they are doing, in effect, is causing more of a sensation and making it THAT much more appealing for the kids to have it.

I looooove Austin! Was there for an art show in October, will be back in September. I would move there in a heartbeat if I could. The people are so nice, and there is such a cool community of artists and musicians.

I agree. Telling them they can't have it is exactly like telling them they need it. LOL When will people learn???

When rich people like Mr. McNair use their fat wallets to get an institution/charity hooked on their money, then threaten to pull that money when they can't force their personal social engineering onto everyone, it isn't exactly a "donation" now is it.

The stupid thing is that its the schoolchildren that would've been hurt by this, not the author of the controversial book. Thankfully the publicity this caused got the school back every cent they would have lost. I wish it always ended this happily.

The same thing has happened with the boy scouts. It is not widely known, but the boy scouts get a lot of their money from Utah. A lot of people inside are pointing at this dependence behind the anti-gay agenda that has been set.

It certainly isn't the boy scouts I knew about when growing up.
