Is Kong racist?

Interesting. I admit I've never even thought about it in this light. To tell the truth, all I ever see in any Kong movie is the love story. Never considered why she was white except that the original plot was about a down and out actress trying to get into the movies and most of Hollywood back then was full of platinum blonde white actresses so I thought it was a sign of the times.
So what is a socially conscious person to do? I have, and always will, love big screen monster movies (ala King Kong, Godzilla et al). Is seeing this movie perpetuating racism?
I like to think that I have principles so I'll wait to hear what some of our African American members have to say before I buy my movie ticket.

People will make conspiracy theories out of everything nowadays.

Okay, help me out here. THEY are calling black people "gorillas," but somehow that makes Peter Jackson a racist? How exactly does that work?
Silly me, I thought it was just a big gorilla.

Exactly what I thought for my whole life! I just love those types of movies and never associated them with any type of sociology or politics at all.Originally Posted by Yekhefah

I'm excited to see it, appreciate good filmmaking, and will not be sitting in the theater thinking about racism during a classic fictional story.
Good grief....![]()

Geez Louise! It's about a big ape and his love for a girl. How can this be considered racist? I haven't seen the new one yet, but if memory serves me correctly the story has remained consistant between the one made in the 30's with Fay Wray, and the one made in the 70's with Jessica Lange (which was pretty hot, by the way). Have they changed some integral part of the story here? And gorillas don't have race..a gorilla is a gorilla is a gorilla. How someone can draw a parallel between a black person and a gorilla is way beyond me.
Personally, I think Kong represents man. The male female relationship there is a big ringer if you ask me (unless we all secretly lust after beastiality.)
Kong works out fine in the wilds of the world. Bring Kong into civilization - and he dies. Most guys are not metro-sexuals. Civilization kills men. Every man will admit it in some small way. But we deal with it for the girl.
Note that Kong has some allegories to money and ambition too. Sure the main attraction gets the girl - for a little while until he is brought down. Then she hooks up with nice guy (Wha! Do we know that is Hollywood fiction or what!)
Kong could also be an allegory to the ring leader's ambition. He has a giant gorilla of ambition - powerful, primitive, and consuming. And his ambition goes on a rampage destroying so many around him (can we say mass layoffs? Environmental disasters?)
^^^^^ I think you're absolutely right, especially with the first two paragraphs.

I've seen it.. and I liked the movie. It is a movie and I'm not going to read anything more into it. Gosh... some people just OVER think everything don't they? I bet you those same people are the ones who come into a strip club and say "Why would I want a lap dance? What's the point?". *sigh* I then explain to these people that this is not a place where you are to use your head (well not the one that sits on your shoulders lol!)... they're over-thinking it.. it's about the experience.. *sigh*
As for the white blonde actress... yeh.. it was due to the time period that King Kong is set within. That time period had alot of actresses like her.

Lame.

Good grief! People have WAY too much free time on their hands. :/
My fave Kong moment? His confusion at trying to find the right blonde. Classic. We’ve all been there.

The confusion with the blondes was another one.

I find it funny because you can just as easily make a case that it's a commentary on the evil of what makes it racist.
Yeah, you can turn it right 'round on them. They're calling black people gorillas and yet Peter Jackson's the racist? If that's what they see when they look at Kong, THEY have the problem, not Peter Jackson. 'Cause i see a gorilla.Originally Posted by lunchbox
