$35 to tour devestated New Orleans?

I'm not kidding you. Coming to NOLA in January, Gray Line Tourns presents the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Tour.

Is this macabre? Is it neccesary to bring back tourists? Will people actually fork over $35 a head for this?

That city is never going to get rebuilt. There will be the commercial area spots - but there are going to be whole quadrants that will remain wastelands.

I expect eminant domain to be declared to build condo's for rich white folk soon.

I'm going home in a week to visit my family. I'm sort of nervous about seeing the city. It's going to be really depressing I'm sure.

Tours? How ghoulish. However, the WTC Ground Zero is a top tourist site. America is a strange country....

Yes they will. They've been doing graveyard and "ghost" tours down there for ages. They are a big draw.

The same way people were glued to the tube for weeks while it was big news, they'll shell out $35 to ride on a bus and see it up close.

Gray Line's been running bus tours in NOLA for a long time. I'm sure this is a replacement for income lost on un/undersold regular tours.

Just seems so sad... I would never want to tour NOLA and Ive been to NYC a few times since 9-11 and have never had an interest to go see where the WTC was... I love horror movies but when it comes to the real life version its too sad....

Well. Mr Neville's statements about the music scene and number of clubs hiring live music acts in NOLA are not quite accurate. There's TONS of clubs all over the quarter (and all over town for that matter) featuring live acts. They just don't pay enough to get the "big names" such as the Nevilles on a regular basis. THAT is why the "big names" in New Orleans have to go on tour or get dayjobs. But there are/were a slew of local acts who worked every single weekend, if not more, and I'm gonna guess that's because they didn't fancy themselves such "big names" that they needed a huge fee to secure their presence. Kermit Ruffins makes money playing music in NOLA because he knows wtf he's doing.

I always thought that acts like the Nevilles would have benefitted from lowering their required salaries in order to secure more local playtime.

Memphis was the same scene as New Orleans in that there were three clubs with 3,000 musicians trying to get gigs," Neville said. "New Orleans has Tipitina's, House of Blues and the Maple Leaf.
Bullshit. Just bullshit. Those are just the 3 "big" live music clubs I could rattle off 20 or so live music clubs off the top of my head, and that's just getting started.

I dont know if america's people are so bad for wanting to see what is going on. It is hard to put into perspective how bad things are until you see it first hand. It is also a way to show your respect for the people who did not make it. My biggest problem with the tour is that 10% is going to the relief effort. Why only 10%?? $3.50 a person is all that is going to help the relief efforts. I think it is great that they are doing the tours. Maybe more people will plan better for disasters like this, not that you can ever be fully prepared, but evacuating sooner or having more supplies, and take forcasters more seriously when they say to evacuate.JMO

Yup, Cyrille plays at Threadgills pretty much every Thursday (the article says Tues, but I think its Thurs). I've been meaning to get out there. I also have a new client who is a relocated evacuee. Austin has been extremely welcoming, I am very proud of Texas.

3.50 may not seem like much however it is better than nothing... and since they will easily
(imo) get 1000 people taking these tours (with the conservative estimate of 150 people per bus).... that equals $3500. That is something. I wouldn't knock it personally.

Otherwise, yes, people will and do pay $35 per head to go see the disaster zone... esp. for us international tourists. We have enough of our own disasters in our own country (it's bushfire season here for Australia and around this time last year Canberra suffered horrendously)... just as madmaxine said... Ground Zero in re: the WTC building is popular.

It won't be wildly successful however it will make money.
