    Default Tonsillectomy

Has anyone here undergone a tonsillectomy as an adult?

It appears that a family of Group C strep has made a little home for themselves in my tonsils, and periodically, they like to come out and play (and multiply). I end up sicker than sick and finally, in the hospital (was discharged yesterday). This has happened 3 times, and I was told that I should strongly consider getting a tonsillectomy as it is will continue to happen.

So, anyone get their tonsils lopped off, not when they were a kid?

Yes. Had them yanked at 41. Making a long-story short, I short-changed the recovery period (went back to work quickly, did alot of talking..etc.) and there was more scaring (on the inside my my throat) than would have happened otherwise, I think. Several years later and my thoat still feels a little odd, when I stop to think about it. On the definite plus side: I no longer risk infected, bulbous tonsils shutting off my air supply whenever I get a headcold. On balance, I'm very happy I had it done.

Hmm it's strange i usually get strep throat maybe now every 3 years. but was getting it as an adult every year. I have a heart condition too! The many different doctors never mentioned taking anything out. To this day i still have mine. BUT....i don't get strep near as much anymore. When i do they throw me on a Z-pack (antibiotics)

One (only one very odd dude) said he could take mine out in office and NOT asleep, just given liquid Valium. Put i was getting the puss on the sides and dying in pain.....

My dad got his removed in his mid-30s & he wishes he still had them....my sister inherited the "problem tonsils" & gets super-sick whenever she has a head cold situation. I guess there's no way to win here. Take the advice of the medical professionals. The only non-surgical solution I see is becoming a homeopathy-supplement buff & eliminating respiratory infections from your life, but that is nigh-impossible. Good luck.

I had them out a few years ago, 2 in January.
I'm usually a great patient and never have any problems but I almost died. Couldn't eat anything for a week, had to try and keep down a few tablespoons of water a day. Then when the scars came off I was vomitting blood and had to be taken to the hospital. Then I had sinus issues for about 3 months afterwards. I lost about 25 lbs through the whole process.

On the upside, I don't get sore throats anymore. But damn, that sucked ass.

I'm sorry to hear your procedure was such an ordeal, Hardandknee. For me, 1 or 2 weeks of pain will be worth avoiding two trips a year to the ER, after a weeklong ordeal of extreme pain, ,no sleep, and being ignored by doctors. The whole pre-existing clause in most health insurance carriers is a problem. I guess I'm just going to have to remember to take my Airborne!

    Damn, that sucks guys!!

I have been begging for my Doc to take mine out for the past 4 yrs, but he says I'm "too old" to have them removed now. So at least twice a year every year I get it. I hate it too.
