    Default Epilator

I want to get an epilator for my legs, and I think for me it is worth it to invest in a good one because I have alot of thick hair that grows fast... what brands do you all recomend? Does anyone know how I can tell a really good epilator from just an okay one? Thanks for any help

    Dancing Girl,

I bought an epilator almost 2 years ago (Silk-epil made by Brown), and let me tell you - it really hurts. It seems that after a while you can get used to it, but still it takes a while to do your legs and it is painful.
Moreover, the red bumps are unavoidable, so you have to do that in the evening to make sure they disapper by the time you have to go out.
One more interesting problem - grown in hair. And it seems that sometimes epilator just pulls out the hair itself, but leaves a follicle of a hair under the skin and that causes tiny black dots.
Last but not least - the hair has to be quite long to get pulled out, so you basically have to wait for a hair to grow in order to use epilator...

However, if you can tolerate pain and somehow avoid red bumps and skin irritation epilator is a good option.

Braun is best. Do not get the Epilady ones, b/c they will tear up your skin. The Emjoi brand claims wonders, but so did Epilady. Make sure that you order it from a place that allows refunds if you're gonna shop around. Epilators are best for areas where skin is taut, like legs, chest, tummy, arms, and the very front part of your bikini. They suck in places like underarms, face, and side of bikini. Yes, they do hurt at first, but I can't feel a thing after 6 years.

Antigone, I agree with you in the aspect that they don't rip out the follicle. Nothing but a good wax could really grab that. However, I think that the hair can be fairly short and still be good for epilation.

It depends where you do it on your body how much it hurts. I can't do my legs but I could do my bikini okay (then got laser).

Krazyjane, do you still notice the red bumps after all this time? I recall using epilator straight for at least 7-8 months, and yet every time there would be some skin irritation.

It is great to hear that you had been using epilator for so long, I will try to take an example from you and gather my courage to overcome the pain ))

holy christ !! epilady ...i remember these torture devices from highschool!!

My best friend Nicole had the hariest legs. But not only were they hairy but they were black hairs. She wasn't allowed to shave yet ( 7th grade. ) so we devised this plan.

We saw this epilady at target and plotted to put our money together and use it to get rid of the leg hair issue. We figured we couldnt get into trouble because it wasn't shaving!

The day we saved enough to actually get this thing and being torture , we locked ourselves in the bathroom and totally basked in how all these cute guys would like us. How much more mature we'd seem and even talked about how we could make better fake boob inserts for our bras.

We did ONE of her legs first. We made it one solid streak basically up to her knee cap before she began screaming. since she couldnt shave she had to go to school the next day with one solid line of white leg surrounded by tons of black hair.

And btw we were in catholic school so we had to wear skirts. and knee highs weren't an option , we had to wear ankle socks.

    Man memories!

    ^Whoa!!!

I use an Epilady sometimes. This is how you do it with less pain: soak in a hot bath for one half hour, including armpits. While you are on your hiney in the tub, drink 1-3 potent drinks. Get buzzed. Get out, dry off, and start Epi-lating yourself as fast as possible. Get back in the tub as needed. It's time consuming but relieves some of the AGONY of ripping your body hair out.

Yes, I still get the red bumps, so I epilate when I know that I won't be wearing shorts or a skirt out in public. The redness goes away within a day, but I use analgesic lotion from Sally's if I want to speed things up.

Don't expect to be totally smooth by using an epilator. I use it in hopes of retarding hair growth, and epilation alone works if it's just for looks. If I wanna get really smooth (like before a hot date with the boyfriend) I'll shave my legs, because shaving is the only thing that will get you totally smooth. Waxing and epilating don't get all the hairs, plus there's the regrowth period. I've used the epilator for about 6 years on and off, and it does make hair lighter and finer eventually. When I get my career on the road and start making money, I'm gonna invest in laser hair removal for my bikini, back, butt, legs, underarms, arms, and maybe sideburns and unibrow. I'm a good candidate for laser b/c I have pale skin and dark hair.

Another tip is to dust the area lightly with Goldbond body powder so skin is less likely to be pulled out. The menthol in Goldbond also works as a slight analgesic.

God, Epilady epilators are the worst on the market. As mentioned before, they tore up my skin. I almost never have that problem with Braun ones. Braun models also have textured attachments that massage the skin as you epilate and helps you keep the device at a 90 degree angle. I once saw a model with a cooling attachment for numbing the area, but that would be horrible b/c cold skin closes the pores and makes it harder to rip out hair.

DO NOT epilate right before or during your period because skin is extrasensitive during hormonal times.

I guess the Epilator will be out of the question for me
