Default Former smoker and PErsistent cough

I thought that when I quit smoking, I would quit coughing crap out of my lungs. 3 months later, it is still happening. I am beginning to suspect that I will NEVER get over this cough unless I get out of the bar business and other smoky envionments all together.

It is definitely NOT attractive. It messes up my hustle and looks and sound REALLY bad. "Hi, baby! **COUGH, COUGH** Would you **GAG** like a **COUGH_COUGH_COUGH_HACK_SPIT_COUGH COUGH* dacne??"

Does anybody else have this problem? Any advice or soultions?

Congratulations (EDIT: on quitting for so long).

Depending on how long/much you smoked it can take over a year, to maybe never. Second hand smoke is not good for it. The scilia in your throat and lungs are dead/paralyzed and need time to heal. Without that, mucus doesn't do what it is supposed to do, and it makes you cough. I'm not a doctor, and I'm just assuming most of this based on the health classes I took when I was a student.

For relief, just your standard cough/throat remedies, try them till you find something that works for you. I would try more natural stuff like Ricola first.

I had that- it'll go away. I had the cough for about 4-5 months post-quit (at 13 months now!).

While you're at work, you can try a cough suppresant if it's really bad, but you need to get that stuff out, so it'll really just extend how long you're a cough-monster.

    Congrats!

Smokers burn out the cilia in their respiratory tracts. After they quit smoking, the cilia grow back and as they do they start clearing out lots of built up mucus. It takes time to go away, but it will.

^ Very true. I smoked for 8 years (quit about 8 years ago). The coughing was horrible, but what helped me was to breathe in steam every night and let myself cough. You're still going to cough a lot, but the steam will help break it all up.

I read somewhere that for every year that you smoke (up to 2-3 packs a day) it takes that many years for your lungs to regenerate.

I know it's annoying, but taking cough suppressant is not a good idea. Just let your body do what it needs to get rid of the crap that is causing the problems. And, breathe steam...you can even breathe steam with aromatic oils (just a drop or two).

Take care of yourself. Oh, and keep drinking plenty of water. If your body is properly hydrated, then the mucus tends to be a little thinner, making it easier for your body to rid it.

Go to the Dr. You might have COPD, and this requires treatment to prevent it from becoming emphseyma (sp?).

COPD is very common among smokers and former smokers.

Yup, VenusGoddess is right...... by definition emphysema is a form of COPD. Nothing can be done to cure it...... just to manage symptoms and quitting smoking.
