Does anybody think the smoking ban in the city will effect the clubs there? I am thinking about trying again to get into the city clubs, just to get away from the smoke. Does anybody have thoughts on this?

I go to clubs in both Massachusetts and RI. In the past 2 years smoking has been banned in bars in both states. While business has been slow in general for two or three years now the smoking ban has not had a negative effect. In mass and RI clubs have had to create designated smoking areas outside where both customers and employees (including dancers) can go to light up.
In my view, the only dissadvantage is to dancers who need to go outside to smoke-thus taking them off the floor and giving an advantage to ladies who don't smoke.
If you don't smoke your going to love it. Your hair and your clothes will not smell like cigarettes anymore.

We just instituted a smoking ban, but the bars have five years to comply... the ones that are already doing it voluntarily are the ones I go to....

I would think it would affect those clubs/bars serving alcohol more than the "juice bars." I remember when the ban went into effect in MA, and the bars fought it until the very end.
If the Chicago ban is just within city limits, I think it will help the topless clubs outside the city limits.
I know a lot of people who don't go out to bars/clubs BECAUSE of the smoke. I stopped club-hopping after I got burned by drunk fuck-sticks who would wave their cigarettes all over the place like there was no one around them.
It may slow down the crowd a little...but not for long. An addiction is an addiction and they'll only be able to stay away for so long. Besides, there are some clubs who have some great air filters and ventilation systems. If they can prove that the air quality inside the club is as good as the outside air quality, then they can keep smoking in their clubs. And, let's face it. If every smoker goes outside to smoke with the noxious fumes from the trucks, industrial complexes and cars/buses, then proving the air quality is comparable won't be a challenge.j/k
Anyways, I don't think it will affect the business much. It'll be in affect, I believe, for ALL of Cook County. That's a large area...and most people who live in Cook county are NOT going to drive to bumfuck Illinois to smoke in the club. The people from bumfuck are still going to come to the city with the smoking ban in order to actually feel like they're going out and having a good time.
I work at a club in NYC, and the smoking ban has not affected us at all. My club has normal business (which is pretty busy, all the time) and only 1 out of 100 customers complain. Usually these guys are not from New York, and want to smoke a cigar.
New Yorkers are used to the ban, and go outside to a designated smoking area. When the ban first hit, is was definitely a shock- people were still lighting up left and right, extra security had to be hired to make sure cigs were put out. The city was issuing heavy fines.
As of right now, 3-4 years later, it's not a problem. Business is great, and a smoke-free environment is well-received.

Eugene, Oregon banned smoking in bars back in 2001, and a lot of bars went out of business after that. The strip clubs are staying afloat because they keep getting sold. One of the clubs has changed hands 4 times since the smoking ban.
Being in the Midwest, I would see that it could really affect the in city clubs in a bad way. When I worked in the upper midwest, I discovered that there are a lot more smokers in that area then on the west coast. I was really suprised to see how many of the dancers smoked as well as customers smoked a lot more then I was used to. In Sioux Falls I used the non-smoking dressing room because I didn't want my street clothes to smell bad, and me and my friend were the only ones in there most of the time.
So I guess only time will tell. I think a lot of people really enjoy a smoking ban in bars, but usually those are people who don't frequent bars anyway. My mom was being very pleased to tell me her city now has a ban on indoor smoking, even in bars. She hasn't been to a bar in over 10 years, but she still voted for the thing!
Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!
You are correct, my apologies.Originally Posted by Iphinome

I smoke occasionally but I LOVE working in clubs where smoking is banned! Much better smell.

What I have noticed here in NYS... Club customers initially decreased, but they returned. You may even get more, or at least different, customers because of the change. The club health environment will greatly improve--fewer colds etc. Tobacco-addicted dancers and staff may have the biggest adjustment and may be a little more surly until the (attitude) adjustment wears off. A few dancers here have eased themselves off of tobacco because of the inconvenience of smoking outside in the uncontrolled climate.
As for my personal experience... Some clubs are now tolerable to me and I tend to stay in particular clubs longer than before (the need to take a breather outside turned into an opportunity to go to another club). Less tobacco breath is nice.
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.
Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.
