At nutrition stores they have weight gainer powder--it is a powder mix that you can blend with milk or water, and it is especially designed to help you gain weight healthily. You could also try upping your carbohydrate intake.

try eating lots of healthy fatty foods, avacados, foods with alot of olive oil, nuts, lots of whole grain foods(often times whole grains have more calories then white flower) that way you can gain wheight without feeling like shit. i also eat alot of organic raw cheeze. its healthy'ish or at least better then the really prossesed stuff, and have calcium.

im really thin too, like dorky thin, not the muscle type of thin. and im trying to keep my weight up. ive been skinny my whole life. unfortunatly the only times iv gained weight fast(5 lbs in a month) is when i drink alot but of course i feel like shit and it bad for me.

good luck! let us know what is working for you.

Kat has given the best advice so far.

Avoid weight gainer powders, they are loaded with sugar. Real food is always better.

Gaining weight is very simple. If you consume more calories than you burn you will gain weight. If you aren't gaining weight, you aren't eating enough.

If you are honestly eating a high amount of calories already and this weight loss seems inexplicable, then maybe go to a doctor and rule out any medical reason for weight loss (i.e. a thyroid problem).

    Not true.

Go to GNC. Ask for ON's Instantized Egg Protein mix. 22g of protein, all your essential, conditional, and nonessential amino acids, no sugar, only 3g of carbs, and no fat. Mixes easily with either water or juice, or even fruit. Comes in vanilla and chocolate flavor (I prefer the chocolate).

Gaining weight is very simple. If you consume more calories than you burn you will gain weight. If you aren't gaining weight, you aren't eating enough.
It's not as much about eating enough as it is eating correct proportions of protein, carbohydrates and fats. If you keep yourself to a 60/20/20 rule, you'll stand a much better chance of keeping lean. Anyone can just force shit food down their throat and get curvy or fat, but make your diet part of your lifestyle of health. As noted above, the higher quality fats derived from nuts and the carbs from whole grain foods will help you in this goal. Anything too radical will change your BMR and potentially start a cycle of yo-yoing that you should avoid.

That's a protein powder, not a weight gainer/meal replacement, BIG difference. Please dont get your supplements from GNC, they are very overpriced. I buy my protein powder at Costco. If you dont have one of those, look online.

No need to be redundant. I noted how Kat had already given good advice on what to eat. I was simply pointing out that you must eat above maintenence calories to gain weight. How much of that weight is fat, muscle, bone, water, etc is dependent upon your diet, exercise program, genetics, etc.

Since the original posters question was about straight weight gain, I kept my response simple. Eating above maintenence = weight gain!

I personally have had excellent results with Ensure. Yes, they are full of sugar... but it gets the job done

They are really quite tasty, and portable, and convenient. Now that my metabolism has slowed, though, I can't drink it anymore.

    Best of luck!

Oh, also, invest in some digestive enzymes. It will help make the nutrients in your food more available to your body. I use Biogest, but I think you need a naturopath's prescription for that...

Protein powders are weight gainers; that's what they're for. You want to gain lean mass, not just pour carbs down your throat.

Please dont get your supplements from GNC, they are very overpriced. I buy my protein powder at Costco. If you dont have one of those, look online.
Terrible advice, it must be said. GNC has very strict quality control over the products sold in their stores and they're all guaranteed, especially the Pro Performance line. It's well worth the money to know exactly what you're getting and that what it says on the label is what you get in the bottle. The problems with fraud in the supplement industry are legion.

Eat 20 peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches a day, you'll gain weight. By the way, you want a low sugar weight gainer, MHP's Up Your Mass, 510 cals, but only 1.5g of sugars.

You may also want to lift weights. While it's true that eating more will help you gain weight, lifting weights will make sure that the weight you are gaining is lean muscle mass and not just "thin fat".

Did you know Optimum Nutrition makes GNC's protein products for them? GNC's not that bad, granted they sell everything at retail. It's tough to hit internet pricing even with the gold card discount. They do put products close to expiration on super clearance, thats about the only time I buy from them.
In the supplement industry, there is a difference between "weight gainers" and "protein powders". Typically the weight gainers take the kitchen sink approach, they use complex carbs, sugars, fast/slow release proteins, and fats. Alot also have some creatine, glutamine, and extra BCAA thrown in. What's commonly referred to as protein powders, typically consists of at least 90% protein with minimal carbs and fat (typically around 1-3g of each). MRP's are meal replacements that typically have 40-50g of protein, 15-30g carbs, and 2-5g fat per packet or serving.

You are ignorant. Do your research before denouncing something. Actually, continue to buy from GNC, your not wasting my money.

BTW, protein powders are a dietary supplement that may also be used when trying to lose or maintain weight. They are not the same as weight gainers, which are loaded with sugar and fat so they will be high in calories. Again, do your research.

I'm not a personal trainer, but play one on TV!

I went from competitve athletics to the military to maintaining my regime for over 20 years now, and the best advice I can give is the following:

    1. Training/weight control is like sex - pay attention & find out what works for your body. "eating all day" for some people means empty calories & filler foods. Whole grains & complex carbs should be loaded during your first two meals of the day, giving them the ability to metabolize & fuel your nights. Whole milk dairy products, like the portable string cheeses or whole yougurt with granola, should be the type of snacks ( at least 2) you have with you three meals.

    2. If you have enough time awake after your shift, eat a carb loaded snack - an energy bar & milk, a plate of whole grain pasta salad, whole grain turkey sandwich, chili....whatever kicks your sweet or savory tooth.

    3. Make sure you do eat all day - the portable stuff, bars/string cheese, fits a busy schedule by always being in a laptop bag or whatever. I always have a stach of Macadamian nuts or Cashews in mine.

    Hope this helps

This is true. The one time I did gain the weight that I wanted I literally had to eat all day! I dont mean like three meals a day, I was eating like every hour. I was able to then because my job allowed me to. All I did was sit at the desk all day and there were no rules about eating at your desk. I got up at 5:30 in the morning so I was able to eat two breakfasts before lunch time even came! I was drinking at least 3 drinks with every meal. Not just one. I would have 2 cups of milk, 2 cups of some kind of juice and an ensure.

I have lost weight since I left that job because I dont have time to eat like that anymore

One piece of advice -- go to a naturopath and have yourself checked out for celiac disease -- people who can't put on weight often are failing to digest their food due to this kind of problem.

Don't go crazy on the proteins, balance is the key. A typical growth ratio for Bodybuilders is 50c-30p-20f (good fats that is) check out saveonsupplements.com they offer Champion Nutritions Heavy Weight Gainer 900 (calories) NOW be careful not to replace the act of EATING with mrps but if you are going to use one try that it. is afordable and balanced but most importantly these types of supplements will assist with the LOOKING healthier part of your post because they offer a more easily assimilated mineral and vitamin source and complete at that. The carnation/ensure type options are full of all of the wrong sugars for correct growth and right before bed will make you just plain fat and help to develop acidic reflux problems. It sounds that your intense cardio situation at the club could put you into what we call a Catabolyc spiral whereby your body,in short, begins to consume muscle for energy because your body sees muscular weight as a liability. Yes your body is that smart! The mrp that I mentioned doesn't have to be mixed with the four scoops that the label suggests you can measure it out as you wish. Ultimately as long as you use it BEFORE those heavy cardio-nights!

but while I am praising avatars Skorn clearly has both a handle on nutrition and judging by her posts some likely tried and tested opinions!! It is all about what works but if you would like some basic calculators for nutrition, hit me a pm and I may have some reading and simple equations to offer!!
