    Default Product raves and recs!

ok, I'm a total beauty product junkie, have tried a whole lot over the years, and for me to say something is a holy grail means, lol. Maybe someone will find something useful here, and will save some dough in the long run. Just to add, my skin is breakout prone and moderately sensitive and hair is thick, long, dry and processed (sounds lovely, lmao).

Face wash: Earth Science ADE Creamy Cleanser (or Earth Science Clarifying one for summer or oily skin). Under $10 each, found at healthfood stores and online. Last a long time, remove make up really well, don't leave a residue, clog pores or dry you out. Also, oil cleansing method is great for heavy make up removal, leaving skin supersoft and giving yourself a mini facial. I do it when I have the time or am stressed.

Toners: DDF Aloe Toning Complex, very soothing and moisturizing, yet not sticky, and DDF Glycolic Toner 10% (looove this!). Both are under $30 at Sephora, huge bottles, and can surely be found on Ebay for less.

Scrubs: The new Olay microderm. & peel (I would marry it if I could, lol), $20 something, Avon Anew Microexfoliant, $20, and crushed aspirin as a scrub/mask.

Masks: St Ives Mineral Clay Firming Mask. On par with more expensive ones. Under $3. Plain honey as a mask while deep conditioning my hair. Really makes a difference.

Treatments: Paula's Choice 2% BHA. $15, I think, on her site. Great on blemishes and bikini line.

Eye cream: Bobbi Brown Hydrating, as well as her Extra Eye Balm. Just get samples, will last forever. Burts Bees Serum with Attar of Roses $20 (?).

Moisturizer/ sunscreen: Olay Total Sensitive spf 15, under $10. Want to try out La Roche Posay, tho.

Lip Balm: Cocoacare Coco Butter lip balm. The best. $1. Still on the look out for something with SPF.

Hand/body cream: Trader Joe's Unscented Moisturizing Cream. Will be loyal to it forever. $3. Sweet Almond Oil rocks too, awesome after waxing (i wax myself all over).

Shampoo: Elucence Moisture Benefits. Very moisturizing, feels luxurious, cleanses well, no build up. $12 somewhere online. I just got a liter bottle that will last me for 2 years.

Conditioner: Silk Elements Megasilk Moisturizing treatment. I'm sure most people use it as a weekly treatment, since it's very rich, but I use it every other day as a regular conditioner. Perfection. Serious moisture and detangling. $10 at Sally's.

Leave in: Giovanni direct leave in. $7 at whole foods. goes on sale often.

    Mousse: Joico Ice whip. $12

Serum: L'Oreal vive smooth intense anti frizz serum. $4 (?)

Heat Protectant: Kiehl's Heat Protective Silk Straightening Cream, $14.

Gotta go, will post more later!

wow thanks for the great info!! hey maybe you could answer this...ok I recently saw a Jenny McCarthy movie and she was using one of those peel off masks...she made it look like it hurt really bad to pull them off and then one of my friends said it really does hurt...have you ever tried this kind of face mask and does it hurt to pull off? What is the difference between a peel-off mask and a regular cream rinse off mask?

Wow how weird i was just thinking of doing a thread like this

Ok well here is my fav products for 2005 lol i too am a beauty product & cosmetic junkie

    HAIR
    TOOLS:MAXIGLIDE hair straightening iron;
Now I have no qualms about spending hundreds of dollars on a straightening iron however Maxiglide is by FAR the best I have ever used. I was first hooked by the infomercial so I checked the reviews on-line and they were more than impressive… I purchased one the same day and I’m so glad I did! I also have the Miniglide. I have long wavy afro hair and I no longer have to fork out money for professional blowout.

PRODUCTS:Beyond Straight & The End hair serums / Toni & Guy
I purchased both Beyond Straight and The End with my Maxiglide (produced by the same company). You use them both together while your hair is still wet and it keeps your hair straight and prevents it from frizzing when the weather is humid. Toni & Guy also make quality products.

    SHAMPOO: Motions Lavish Conditioning shampoo
    Leavesmy hair so amazingly soft.

CONDITIONER: MOTIONS Critical Protection & repair treatment & EGG
Everybody always asks me how i manage maintain such healthy long hair (afro hair is prone to breakage) and still change my hair colour from black to blond to aurburn etc. while using texturising chemicals. Well i mix MOTIONS CPR Treatment mixed with 1 RAW EGG follwed by any MOTIONS conditioner. I swear by this.

    FACE
SCRUBS: Olay’s microderm & peel kit. I hear that it’s identical to Philosophy’s peel kit at a fraction of the price. I also like to use St Ives facial scrub ppl say that its way too abrasive for the face but I love it.

    CLEANSER. ALATA SAMINA/Dove soap

This soap is made in Ghana (West Africa) and is made out of herbs and plantain skin along with vit E and shear butter and it smells wonderful. This soap has been used for centuries in Ghana… Ghanaian women have beautiful skin. I also use Dove soap on my face which ppl are always surprised by but it really does the job. Besides Dove soap has an ingredient that was used for burn victims in the war. I heard beyonce uses dove bar soap for her face also. I ALWAYS get complemented on my clear skin.

    LIPS. Burts Bees/MAC lip conditioner/benefit
For chapstick i like Burts Bees but MAC has to be one of the best lip moisturisers out there. I really like Benefit's Lipscription also but mainly because of the buffing beads.
MOISTURISER: Im stil looking for my HG face moistuiser. Think i will purcase either Dermalogica (great from what i have heard) or Lancome. I worked for lancome for a short while and i was impressed with their products.

    BODY
SCRUB: Bath & Body Works body Scrubs.
Love love love the sugar/salt scrubs with oil, leaves my skin glowing and they smell good too.

BODY CONDTIONER: Olay Moisturinse In Shower Body Lotion
keeps my skin nice ansoft for the winter months.

    CLEANSER: Dove Soap bar
Has to be dove soap for me nothing else will do
MOISTURISER: I have so many for the body but i have found that mixing pure shear butter in with any fav moistuirser works great for the skin.

^ ^ There's an understatement, lol! I literally get a high from reading beauty boards and trying out products. When home alone with nothing to do I play with my stash of goodies like I used to play with dolls, rearranging, trying on different make up looks, etc, haha. Very theraputic.

BlondeLocks, I used to love peel off masks. My fave was St Ives one until they reformulated it. But they are all basically the same, and to my knowledge all contain high percentage of alcohol, and it's all there is to it, aside from stuff that makes it dry up at peel off, which is simply plastic. It's fun to use, but no real benefits. It can give a temporary glow, but it's from exfoliation which can be achieved by less harsh methods. Just have to mention, the DDF 10% Glycolic Toner does contain alcohol, but it helps the acid penetration (or was it activation? lol), and is as effective as a peel you get from the esthetician. It depends on you how often you can use it; I do when I want to look extra good, and it makes pores invisible, evens out skintone and I never want to wear make up over it; it's also good for the bikini line and ingrowns.

Cream masks are best for dry/dehydrated skin, since it's concentrated moisture. I have's tried any, but here's a great product that I forgot to mention: "Vita C Max A Perfect One Minute Facial" by Jason. It's Vit. C in an oil solution, and seriously moisturizes and gives a glow. It's got little scrubbies in it too, if you shake the bottle. Smells heavenly! HTH!

I totally agree with the Paula's Choice 2% BHA. I had a pimple on my bum a couple of days ago(the horror!), and put some on before I went to bed, and it was gone the next day.

I tried the DDF Glycolic toner after hearing good things, but I started getting hives on my face, so if you have sensitive skin this may not be for you.

I'm going to pick up the Vita C Jason mask, and the Olay microderm and peel tomorrow.

    Great thread, by the way!

Well apart from the great reviews about maxiglide I was impressed with the strengthening pins on the plates, I have never seen this on a straightening iron before and they really make a big difference when flat ironing the hair.

By the way how do you make your aspirin mask I have always wanted to try it but I know you can make it different ways.

    ok i'll bite...here's my favorites for 2005

    HAIR:
The Scruples O2 Originals line. Very good for over-treated/processed/colored hair. A bit expensive but I think it's totally worth it. I use the O2 Originals shampoo, conditioner, hairspray and the heat resistant salve.
My hair straigntener is Vidal Sassoon, roughly $20-$30 at Target and works wonders.
I use Garnier Fructis Hair balm...it's like a gel but it work so nicely for intricate hair styles.

    Lady Products:
Pearl Tampons in the variety pack and also Pearl Tampons that are scented.
Baby wipes for a quick swipe of refreshness.

    FACE
I use Biore Face Cloths to take my make up off and also use them to clean my face. They are so refreshing and get the job done. I use Origins Nightamins moisturizer which makes me feel like I just had a facial. I like the Khiel's Papaya and Almond face scrub, smells wonderful and uses all natural fruit ingrediants. Day time moisturizer I use is Origins Make A Difference, very light and not oily.
On my lips I like Blistex Complete Moisture, Kiehls lip balm or Burts Beeswax (non-lifeguard kind)

    Makeup:
I use MAC Studio finish power, has a great matte finish and leaves no shine. MAC liquid eyeliner in black and MAC X-Mascara in black. All eye shadows and blush also from MAC. My favorite lip color is Wine from guess where...MAC.

    BODY
Dove exfoliating bar soap and/or Vistoria's Secret Body Wash in Halo. I love the cheap old pumice stone for my pedicures and use Origins CoCoa Butter moisturizer or St. Ives Whipped Silk
It's not easy being a Barbie doll but someone's gotta do it

Jason Lavender Satin Shower Body Wash. About $10, huge bottle, great value and quality. Makes a wonderful bubble bath, smells true lavender, very foamy, but non drying. There are other scents, too.

    Make up.

Jordana makes perfect lip and eye liner pencils (color extend to be specific). A dollar each. Rock n' Rose lipliner is the one I gave up my Chanel nude one for.
Bobbi Brown gel liners (love Sepia) are more expensive than MAC new gel liners, but stay on longer. Paula Dorf angled liner brush is great for them, and Laura Mercier Flat Liner is the best for tightlining.

Wet 'n Wild shadow in Fine Wink ($1.99) is my find of the year. Can't imagine not working on someone. MAC Phloof is the best brow/cheekbone/inner eye corner highlighter. MAC Satin Taupe is the must have as well.

Concealer wise the closest to the grail I have is Bobbi Brown concealer kit to go. Got the corrector, creamy concealer and powder all in one compact for $18. For a quick fix Almay Amazing Lasting works.

Powder: Palladio Rice Powder Loose ($5 Sally's), and Paula's Choice Pressed. Stopped looking at all others. Non cakey, invisible, don't turn orange, keep oilies away, no break outs or dryness.

Lips: Chanel Giggle Glossimer. I think size and quality justify the price, plus color is like nothing I can find cheaper, and it makes my lips look poutier.

Brow Pencil: Chanel Blonde Cendre (true ash), or Rimmel Hazel.

Nails: Chanel Vamp (or it's dupe Revlon Vixen) and Natural Pink, OPI Passion, and guys give me compliments on OPI Shanghai Shimmer with silver glitter coat on top. Seche Vite as a top coat, and Creative Stickey as base.

As for the whole line of inexpensive quality cosmetics, my vote this year goes to NYX. Found it in Longs, no disappointments with anything. In fact, nothing ever helped me create the Playboy bunny look as this stuff does. Move over Alexis Vogel, lol.

    Ok here we go

    EYES
Barry M Dazzle Dust: These are fab! They are exactly like the MAC pigments however they come in a smaller jar and only cost 4.50 (cheap & cheerful). Barry M cosmetics are sold in the UK but you can purchase them online too. For regular eye shadow though it has to be MAC for me. http://www.barrym.co.uk/index.cfm?fu...&i_product=465

Talika Lash Extender: If you can't be bothered with applying falsies then give this stuff a try. They are single fibres in a bottle which when applied after mascara stick to ends of your lashes. You can purchase this product at sephora http://www.sephora.com/browse/produc...egoryId=S10510

Shiseido Mascara Base: By far the best eyelash primer I have used. This one isn't white it's actually grey and doesn't come attached to a mascara like the other brand out there but at $26 is the worth the money imo. The Asian women love this as you find many of them don't have long lashes.

Shiseido Eye Lash curler: Shiseido is a Japanese cosmetics co. so the curlers are made especially for Asian women with slanted eyes and short eyelashes, because of this they don't pinch your eye lids unlike other brands. I have noticed that ppl prefer them to the shuemura lash curlers which are very popular. Also I find this much better than the heated kind.

Max Factor Lash Perfection: This new limited addition is my HG mascara and I have tried hundreds. The new iFX flexible bristles brush is what makes this a wonderful product. They make my lashes fan out without looking clumpy and they look amazingly long. MF lash perfection seems to sell out quite a lot so you might have to shop around. I also prefer this to the Diorshow which I wasn’t that impressed with.

    LIPS
MAC Lipglass: I love both the tinted and clear Lipglass, my fav colour has to be "c-thru" a nice creamy cream colour.

MAC Lustreglass: Lustreglass has more of a shimmery look compared to the Lipglass. My fav Lustre colour is "Instant Gold" and I usually wear this on top of the tinted lipglass to give my lip colour more dimension.

MAC Lacquer: I don't remember the colour that I wear but they look great applied on top of a creamy lipstick.

TOO faced Lip Injection (plumper): Now this stings like a mofo, seriously, but I love the results I get with it . I reecently tried the City Lips plumper (i think thats the correct name) and i prefered this to the Lip Injection. It doesn’t sting and has more of a plumping effect imo

    CHEEKS
MAC Blushcreme: I wear this in "cheery" for that flushed dewy look.

MAC Powder Blush: I wear this in "raizin" sometimes over the Blushcreme...gives the cheeks more dimension.

    FACE
MAC Studio Fix: I have been wearing this since I was 15 and doubt I will ever grow tired with it.

MAC Hyper-real Foundation: I love the pearlescent formula of this foundation. Gives me that dewy look (which I love). I apply this with my MAC foundation brush rather than a sponge the finishing look looks better.

MAC Studio Finish/Select Cover-up concealed: I prefer the MAC Studio Finish concealer to the Select Cover-up. Studio Finish gives great coverage and I usually wear it without foundation to give me more of a fresh bare-faced look.

MAC Iridescent Loose powder: I use this for highlighting my brow bone, cheek bones, nose bridge, chin etc.

MAC Fix +: I can't praise this product enough. This is a liquid vitamin refreshment spray for the face. I sometimes spritz this on my bare skin but it’s normally used under or on top of your foundation. If I can't be bothered to apply my Hyper Real foundation I will spritz this on top of my Studio Fix and (again lol) it gives my that dewy effect.

MAC Strobe Cream: This is an iridescent cream which I like to mix in with my liquid foundation for more of a glow.

PHEW... Ok i think that i better stop there LOL

    Some products I love:

Redken Anti-Snap treatment-My hair is damaged from coloring it a lot, and this makes it look healthy and smooth and not frizzy.

Crest Whitestrips-They really work! I tried something similar by Colgate and I wasn't happy with the results.

CC Professional Salon Formula Reconstructive Treatment for dry, damaged hair-available at Cost Cutters in a white and blue tube. It only costs around $7. It makes my hair feel softer and healthier after I use it, and it smells good too.

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara-I use this and I get compliments on how long my eyelashes are. Some people even think I'm wearing false eyelashes.

Bath & Body Works True Blue Spa Bringing Up the Rear Firming Body Lotion-I massage this into my butt and upper thighs after my shower.

Bath & Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar body lotion and body splash-I get lots of compliments from custys about how good I smell when I wear these.

Venus Divine and Schick Quattro razors-they both work well for me

I'm sooo printing out this thread. Love reading about other people's stuff.

Soybeangirl, Shroom and Carbon are my staples too! Dunno if you ever looked at Naked Lunch (pink version of Shroom) and Black Tied (sparkley version of Carbon). Makes a great easy smokey eye.

Seraya, re: aspirin, I just take 4-5 of the uncoated ones, from the dollar store, make them into a paste with a little water in the palm of my hand, and spread it over a clean, slightly damp face. Then I either just scrub and wash off, or leave it to dry for 10 min (or until sneezing comes on, lol), and then scrub and wash off. I think some people make an aspirin toner, too.

Oooh! I love these threads! I always end up running out to buy the stuff people recommend.

Ok, here's a few of my favorites:

*Johnson&Johnson SoftWash body wash (the kind with baby oil)
*Andrea Eye Q's eye make-up remover pads
*Platinumskincare.com's peels - have used the 30%, 40%, 50% glycolic now using the 12.5% TCA peel
*Revlon skinlights foundation - makes my skin glow!
*Royal chiffon face cream with royal jelly - bought it online, a little pricey but worth it!
    *Maybelline Lash Discovery mascara
*Oral B Triumph electric toothbrush - well worth the price! Love it!!!
*PanOxyl bar 10% benzoyl peroxide soap - the only thing that keeps my skin clear!
*TIGI Bedhead Extra Extra Straight mousse - the ONLY thing that gets my hair straight!
*TIGI Bedhead Chocolate Head treatment - makes hair shiny and smells soooo good!

I love reading what everyone loves to use!

Oooh! I second the aspirin mask!!! Works AWESOME!!! Make sure the aspirin is UNcoated though. I tried it with regular Bayer and it didn't work.

I usually scrub, leave it for 5 min., then scrub again while I wash it off. Sometimes I do it in the shower too if I am in a rush. Definitely a great cheap mask that works!

Paula Begoun has a book called "Don't Go To The Cosmetics Counter Without Me". It lists every product out there from A-Z and gives you the pros, cons, price, ingredients of each. The book sells for 27.95 at Barnes and Noble.

As far as make-up goes I really like Lancome. I really like their Matte Nu powder compact. Also their star bronzer is great. Their products are dermatologist tested. My eyes are extremely sensitive and I can tolerate their eye make-up. I love the artliner eye liner and their Definicils mascara. I am thinking of switching eye shadow though as theirs is not quite high enough in pigment for club wear. I have heard Mac and Bobby Brown has the best eye shadow. I will attach a pic of the eye shadow I use by Lancome and you can see how it looks on. I need something more intense. Haven't found a great lipstick yet either. Any suggestions would be great.

Moisturizers, was using Lancome First Signs of Aging products. Too oily for my skin I think it caused me to break out. I have a very oily t-zone on my face, I use Pro-Activ for it which works great. I do need to find a good eye cream that works well for sensitive eyes and contact lense users. I use Jergen's Skin Smoothing lotion to help you shave less often on my legs. I think it helps some but I don't notice an extreme difference. On the rest of my body I use Jergen's Skin Firming lotion. I think it really works.

Hair products, Nexus Y serum, claims to make your hair more youthful. I don't know out about that but I do know that it took my hair from extremely damaged to very, very healthy in less than a year.

Nails, Revianail is the best. My nails were brittle and weak after taking acrylics off. This stuff brought my nails back to perfect quickly and they look much better now than acrylics could ever make them look.

I used to love Paula Begoun's book. Ironically all the stuff I got off of her site, with the exception of 2 things, either broke me out like nothing else, or was ineffective. Heh...

greenidlady1, check out sephora brand lipsticks. they got all shades and colors imaginable, the formula is one of the few on the market that hasn't dried out my lips personally, and it's only 10 bucks. mac has a good long wearing lipstick (not the regular one). oh, and definicils and artliner used to be my staples, until i discovered that l'oreal's liner intense is identical to artliner in all ways, but is less money (earthen rock shade is wonderful), and i ditched definicils for l'oreal voluminous, cuz it gets the same look, but lashes are softer to the touch, and it holds the curl well.

Thanks for the advice Pissy, I will have to remember that next time I need eyeliner and mascara. BTW, Loreal makes Lancome. I just thought Lancome was like an upgrade of Loreal. But it the Loreal is just as good and derm tested as well, I would rather pay less for the same. Thanks again.

No prob, will be happy if it works for you as well as it did for me. And also since mascara needs to be tossed every 3 months definicils was getting expensive.

MAC shadows are very pigmented, great for the club. Bobbi Brown, Chanel and Lancome were the least pigmented of all I tried.

Forgot to add Estee Lauder Intense Lip Creme lipstick. Got it in a gift with purchase, and it's unlike any other. The closest thing to a lipbalm, and the color lasts!

Ooooh, this is a fun thread. It's good to know there are plenty of other girlie girls out there just as obsessed with beauty products! Here are some of mine:

Face wash: Peter Thomas Roth 10% BPO acne wash - your skin will be totally clear within one month of using. This product changed my life, seriously.

Self tanner: Dior super bronze - by far the darkest results.

Hair products: Tigi dumb blond shampoo and conditioner - works great on highlighted brunettes.

Eyeshadow: Mac pigments - these blend the best and the colors are so intense.

Just ordered a t3 evolution blowdryer, will post if it was worth the money once I recieve/use it.

I also prefer pointed tweezers and use Redken Anti-snap on my colored hair.

I can't think of anything else right now, but will post more later.
