Default Need your input and critique

So today is the second day I have my brand new Lil Mynx, and the second day of me trying to learn some pole moves completely on my own.

I started dancing in September and couldn't be any newer, so this is the unedited, unrehearsed, completely embarassing practice session I had today after spending all of yesterday on the pole (my muscles hate me right now).

Advice and criticism are really welcome - there are no pole dancing classes in my area and I had no way of practicing anything until yesterday.

I guess I'm just really hard on myself and I'm still working on the whole confidence thing.

I don't have too much upper body strength, and I KILLED myself trying to learn pole tricks yesterday, so today I can barely move my arms lol. Once my body isn't as sore, I'll try to start swinging higher up the pole.

    Hi!
    Newbie here.

Looks fine to me! Just be careful and ready for lots of bruises if you're "impatient" like I was! lol My first week of playing on my pole I was convinced I could flip on it. That week, I did eventually get upside down, but I also broke a toe, bruised the outside of my left ankle and inside of my right, bruised up the back of my right leg, the inside of my thighs and bruised up both sides of my ribs so much that I couldn't do ANYTHING for about 4-5 days! haha

I would suggest getting the polekatz video, they have pretty good instructions on there.

I think it looks nice. Your moves flow together well and you look graceful. If you just had strength but no grace you might look like this:

yeah, i noticed more customers were more in awe by the grace and sensuality of a dancer, then the fancy pole tricks. sometimes those pole tricks arent attractive to look at..

Is it just me... I couldn't access the video... how do you download it ?

I kept getting referred to a page: RapidShare - The world's biggest 1-Click Webhoster

Can I access the video without signing up for anything ???

EDIT TO ADD MY FEEDBACK: Pretty damn good for a beginner! You have some great potential there.

Yeah it's at the bottom, I have DSL and it took me about 3 minutes to download it. But onto feedback: I think you look great, you do not look like a newbie at all! I have never tried to dance on my living room carpet (when I started dancing I lived in a home with wood floors..ouch my knees still hurt thinking about them) but if it is possible to do so have you thought about practicing with your shoes on? Heels being one the major problems we encounter when we enter "the dancing profession" usually, that might help a bit. Good luck!

You did great! The most important advice I can give you are the following: 1) POINT YOUR TOES!! It may not seem like a really important thing, but having a good move is ruined when you keep your foot flexed...even the foot that is the support on the pole. If you can remember to point your toes, do it. 2) I know this is practice, but you just go around, and around, and around. While your pole work is great, you should NOT rely on just the pole...start incorporating more floor work. As you get stronger and can incorporate more pole moves, you can do less floor work, but work on doing the moves without turning around the pole 5 times to do the spin. I know it's hard, but you want to keep the customer's eyes on you. If you just stay at the pole, you give them nothing to keep them interested (unless you are doing some Pantera type pole work).

All in all, you did excellent!! You have a lot of potential. Great job!!

Oh, and about the bruising...it comes with the territory. There is no way to learn to do any kind of pole work without bruising some part of your body.

Yep, point your toes and when you have your leg out straight, don't bend your knee or flex your foot.

I didn't watch when I posted before. The first half, you seem somewhat hunched over and bent pretty far at the knees, like you're trying to hard to sway your ass as you move.

Stand up straigher, and arch your back more, bend at the knees less.

Haha I know, I know - I try! It is hard though, especially for someone who's not flexible.

The pole is basically my security blanket...I figure if I can't do anything else, I'll just walk around the pole a couple more times. LOL

Any tips on what to do in terms of floor work? Like I said, I'm not that flexible (YET), so basic stuff that still looks sexy is what I'd want to start practicing.

Now THIS I expected. So far the bruising is worth it - I'm having too much fun!

Don't get used to using it as your security blanket or you'll NEVER let go!! I just looked at the video again, and if you don't have a lot of moves, you should do the moves you DO have MUCH, MUCH slower. Where you are moving your body along the pole (but not spinning)...you should be doing that in a teasing, playful, yet slow and sensual way. It always helped me when I was a newbie. "Shit! I can't think of any other moves..." When you hit that point then you take all of your moves and chop the movement time in half...REALLY get into the moves...if you let your body really move to the wave of the music (no matter how fast or slow the music is) you'll give yourself time to get into another move.

Everything that you were doing was fine. Just do it about 50% slower. Really let the customers "feel" through the move with you. When you put your leg in the air and are sliding your hand down your leg. Don't do it like your brushing water off...do it like you are sensually, slowly, provacatively putting lotion on. You'll find that you only need to have 5-10 moves as opposed to 20-40. In my experience, the guys went NUTSO over that. Giving them a lot of visual without showing anything works wonders.

So, point your toes, don't do endless circles around the pole, and slow everything down.

    You're going to be great!!

I thought you looked great - without you telling me you were a newb I wouldn't have recognized it. I liked how you weren't trying to spin completely in rhythm with the song, cuz you would've been a whirling dervish

Keep at it, and one of these days I hope to make it down there to see your work!

wow!!! I thought that was really good! I still haven't learned how to spin around the pole! lol.

I still consider myself a newbie and one thing that you do very gracefully is getting up off the floor. I still have yet to master that. Any tips?

    Well thank you!

As for tips, when I started practicing it was always barefoot, because there is waaaaay too much traction when you're dancing on carpet with 6" heels. I basically just watched some videos like the ones at www.verticaldance.com , and also watched how the girls at my club got up off the floor, where they placed their hands, etc. Then it's just a matter of trying to emulate that.

Also, just wanted to let everyone know that I actually performed the moves I learned over the past 2 days and used them on stage at work last night! They actually turned out a lot BETTER than how I've been practicing, and my stage tips have increased dramatically and stayed that way consistently throughout the night. Even though it was a Friday night and there are generally more tips on the weekends, I've never made as many tips and they've never been this consistent.

I also followed VenusGoddess' advice and really got into each move, allowing time for each one before moving on to the next. I was so thrilled with my performance - I felt a lot more confident on stage and actually felt like I had something to do up there to stand out.

Oh-my-god. I actually managed to do an invert today. Well, sort of. I lifted myself up, swung my legs over and was hanging upside down really, really UNgracefully. I just can't believe I did it - I couldn't even do it this morning! Then, I did it again!!

Okay, okay, I'll stop squealing now. Now, what is the correct way of holding on to the pole with your feet/legs while you're upside down? I don't think I can let go with my hands yet either...

^ Well, it depends. What are you trying to do? If you just want to "hang" there, then you need to grip the pole with the insides of your thighs. If you want to do something like pushing back and then sliding down the pole, then you would grip the pole between your shins and your ankles (of course, you do NOT let go of the pole with your hands, since they will be holding all of the weight).

    Hope that helps.
