the trick is in knowing how much 'float' takes place on your checking account, as well as knowing how much any fees will cost. If you need to get back to 'ground zero', you've got the right idea about not writing new checks for a couple of weeks and allowing all of your outstanding checks to clear plus allowing any fees to post. At that point you can be reasonably confident that your 'balance' is correct.

You'll most likely have "outstanding" checks on each statement. You take the total the bank has and deduct the outstanding checks (the ones that have not cleared) from the bank's total. That should give you the "matching" total in your checkbook.

If you are still having problems or you think that there is a discrepancy, you can always go to your local branch and sit down with a personal banker. They'll help you figure out what went wrong in your checkbook. I do my checkbook in two parts...I write everything down in my checkbook, and then I input everything into MS Money. The totals in MS Money should match, exactly, to what I have in my actual register. Usually what happens, is that you miscalculate an amount somewhere. If you write a lot of checks or have a lot of activity on your account...balancing once a month can be hard. If you have online access, you can "temp balance" several times a month to make sure it's all on the up and up.

    Hope that helps.
