    Default Lice

Ok I am freaking out. Yesterday at Christmas dinner there was an 8 year old girl who announced as soon as she arrived: "No hugs, I HAVE LICE!!".

This kid (not a relative) had baby-oil in her hair, really greasy. Pigtails. I thought her dad or mom should have put her hair in a turbin. She kept shaking her hair and scratching all through dinner. All the other adults just acted like nothing was up.

Meanwhile I was freaking out, I have these great length extensions and you know they are not cheap. I wanted to leave but it was impossible. I tried to stay on the other side of the room but this was not always possible.

Right now, 24 hours later, I feel like something is in my hair... near my ears is itchy. I had an extra flea colar from my dog, so I am wearing it crown style and the itcing has intensified.

I don't know what to do if I get lice. I would have to take the extensions out for sure. Plus who would comb the lice out? My girlfriends would not come near me. Yikes.

Yes it may be. I wonder how long it takes to know if you really contracted lice?

It's pretty quick. Just go to your drugstore and get some OTC lice stuff. I don't think it should afect your extensions (but don't quote me on that).

Well you have to comb out your hair they can get stuck in the roots of your exstentions.

Wash all your bedding asap. I had a friend who had lice when she was little and used RID. I have no idea what you do next.

Lice generally feed from skin blood etc. Thats why they itch they are eating at your scalp.

That was a very irresponsible decision on the girl's parents part to let the girl out of the house without covering her head.Better yet, they should have taken care of the lice before going out in public. That was very stupid and careless.I would make an appointment with a doctor just to be safe.

You're right OTB that was extremely irresponsible of those parents to not treat that child immediately.

BUT! There is hope for you 242_fair! There is a common misconception that lice hop or jump like fleas. They don't. They crawl, rather s-l-o-w-l-y too. Chances are you don't have lice. I would go visit my family nurse practioner just to be safe (or have somebody who's experienced in checking to check your head) You have blond hair too, I hear they are harder to see in blond hair. A nurse told me once that using a UV light helps to see them better on blond hair.

Don't treat your hair unless you've removed the extentions and are able to nitcomb through your hair.

How do I know all this? Oh, the joys of mommyhood.

Yes I agree. I think I do have it, and now I am really mad at the parents.

They are very irresponsible, her hair should have been covered, should have been prevented from flying all over. They didn't even tell her to stop shaking her hair all over the place. She's a child from divorced parents and clearly nobody had control of her and she plays parents against eachother.

I know it's Christmas and no kid should have to miss out, but there were so many guests and it ruined the night for several of us.

Now I'm going to have to deal with it for weeks.

It doesn't take weeks to deal with lice. It only takes as long as it takes you to get to the store and buy RID or something similar. Yes, you'll have to take the extensions out (like LSM said)...but within 1 application, the lice should be completely dead. But, BEFORE you do your hair, you need to get the stuff that you shampoo your carpet with (it's made for lice) and wash all of your bedding AND vacuum your bed (both sides of the mattress) thoroughly.

It doesn't matter if the parents would have covered her hair...they still could have been passed. I cannot believe that they didn't spend the $9 to buy the stuff to TREAT her with. They could have treated her that morning and she would have been good to go for the X-mas gathering.

You may want to consider saying something to the parents...

You probably don't have them... they don't jump or anything. An easy check is to scratch your head, then look under your fingernails. Black dots? Lice. No black dots, no lice.

Rather than using the drug store stuff that dries out your hair and makes your eyes water, you can use olive oil (or any veggie oil) instead. Just slather it on really good... being oil, it coats them completely and they smother, and then you can just comb them and their eggs out. Do it every day for four days, just in case you missed any eggs.

Just be extremely careful with what you use to treat the lice. My Son came home with them on his CLOTHES when he was in Kindergarten. He had no hair (horrible hair-cutting accident, so I had to shave him bald.) Well, they saw my older daughter's head and said "Weeee!". I freaked out, and went and got some RID to treat her with. BIG mistake. Although it killed the lice pretty much on contact, it also made her hair fall out... in CLUMPS. Within a week, she was completely bald except for a little tuft of hair on the top. It was an allergic reaction to the RID. Took about 5-6 months to regrow her hair (with the aid of hair creams given to us by the pediatrician).

Whatever you try to use.. Please, do a spot test first, and wait a bit. Be careful! It's very easy to panic and just cover your entire head in the stuff as soon as you get it.. Don't. Spot test and see if anything happens to your hair.

Also, I'm sure you know, but.. Vacuum, Wash the bedding you've used and seal them in bags for 2 weeks. If it's very cold where you're at (like below freezing), you can set the bedding outside overnight as-is. The cold will kill them and their eggs overnight.

Oh.. And after you vacuum everywhere (carpets, furniture), throw the bag away (outside)!

Also--Ask the pharmacist what type of stuff you should get. They're always helpful with that kind of stuff, and will be able to tell you the other possible side-effects.

Drugstore treatments kill living lice, but not always the eggs. Which means, until you get the eggs all out, there will be recurring hatchings---meaning more lice. Someone will have to go through your hair and pick all the eggs out with their fingernails--eggs adhere to the hair shaft by a sticky substance. I do believe there are people who you can pay to do this for you--lice are considered a household pest. If you do find you are contaminated, contact a pest control agency--they may be able to give you a referral. If not, a public health nurse should be able to point you in the right direction.

Ok the weave costs like $1600 so it's a major pain to take it out for a few days. It has to be redone.

I am so mad at the parents. I really want to say something to them. I don't know them well though, I don't even have their home number. Like if she wasn't allowed to go to school on Friday because of the lice, then she should not have been playing with other kids at christmas and adults too.

And frankly I think that if she hadn't let it slip that she had lice, the parents would not have warned anyone. It's sick.

I'd avoid that family in the future. They're a reinfestation just waiting to happen.

Why don't you call your hair stylist and tell her you were exposed to lice and you think you might have it? Ask her what she thinks you should do. Maybe she'll even peek at your head for you?

My kids had it earlier this year (got it from school, we assume), and I made a post about that. Do a search if you want to, but most points have already been covered. There is also a spray (Rid, and storebrands) that you can use on your couch cushions, car seatbacks, etc. But yeah, I would just go see a doctor and ask them for tips. and another big yeah, if you do have them, i'd be having a little chat with those parents.

Oh, and when my kids had them my head would get itchy, but it was just cuz i was freaking out i would get them (even though I shave bald) so it could just be paranoia. Have someone check your hair for you.

Baby oil is a very old treatment for lice, as is Vaseline (much better) what happens is the baby oil suffocates the lice while not allowing the eggs to hatch out! treatment needs to be on-going for a WEEK doing this however. Then a good shampoo, and a head check again.

Some people can't take otc products, they can sting, especially if the child scratches the bites open!

She should have had the child head wrapped however out of respect of other people.

If you do not use the child (or family) hair comb, brush bedding chairs etc. you will be fine. You really need close contact with people who have lice! And at time more then a one time contact.

I hope they clear up the childs head!

I hope you are ok as well!

It's an old thread as I suffered from it for weeks. Got rid of it eventually but it took time.

Best of luck as I wouldn't wish head lice on my worst enemy. It really sucked having it. I still am paranoid whenever I scratch my head. Thankfully all that comes off now is dandruff (okay I know dandruff isn't good but I'm seeing the humour here)

god this post just made me have the flashback of swimclass hell.

You know when you have those fuckers trust me!!! I think I was in the 6th grade. A girl borrowed my hairbrush and gave me them that way.

It took forever to get rid of the shit. Not sure why. I was too young and i've drank since then to recall the reasons.

I know though that we had to clean everything.. the bed..linens. it was a fucking mess.

Why the hell her parents brought her out...!?!!

Ugh, I had lice in fourth grade and my head still itches at the word.
You'll probably need 2 OTC treatments, one to kill all the lice, and another one week later to kill any lice that had hatched.
And be sure to run a fine-tooth comb through your hair (they usually come in the kit) to remove any nids (louse eggs... gross) from your hair. Pesky little fuckers!

To see if you have them, you could use any number of the methods listed here, or you could get a trusted friend or relative, (call mommy haha) to check your hair for any lice or eggs. To differentiate nids from dandruff or any other skin flakes: dandruff or skin flakes will move easily if you flick it, while a nid is stuck to the hair, and will only come off if the strand is grasped between the thumb and forefinger.

I don't know if they still sell it, (it's (thankfully) been awhile) but if they still sell Pronto snap that shit up!

And while olive oil and vaseline are natural, you really really really have to scrub to get it out of your hair.

Any update on whether you have it or not?
