    Default Glowing diamonds?

My boyfriend got me a ring for XMas... it has 10 little diamonds set in the band.. i LOVE it BTW... anyway - at work last night im sitting with some custys and notice ONE of the diamonds is GLOWING in the black light... not all, just one... and the custy looks down and says nice CZ ring. I said its not supposed to be CZ.. its real.. i picked it out and know where we bought it... his sister works at the jewelry store he got it at...

I dont get why a nice jewelry store would put a CZ in the set and it really pisses me off to think that they would do that.

Anywho - before I go down there and yell at the owner of the store and make him fix it I want to make sure that diamonds dont glow in black light... thanks much

im not too sure about them glowing in black light....i assume they wouldnt.

a real diamond will get a black dot in the center of it if you put a wet ciggarette paper over the stone.

i dont know what you call them in the states, but they are just a small piece of rice paper ppl use to roll ciggs in? suck on it for a few seconds so it goes transparent.then place over the stone. every diamond should have a black dot in the center. no dot-no diamond.

(my dad is a rock miner in aussie, hes told me this countless times, and im 100% sure hes right)

OK,I can answer this for you right now.Diamonds have inclusions in them and when you have one that has a lot of them,it will glow under black lighting. It's the way the light refracts within the stone.I have studied to become a gemologist once. It's not a CZ.It's just a diamond with a lot of inclusions in it.

ok - so does it having so many incusions mean that the diamond is of lower quality/clarity? The diamonds are small and the ring was almost $800... and it looks SO TACKY in the black light...

I dont know much about diamonds (my first one ) but I would think that when you spend good money on one that the diamonds shouldnt glow.

Guess I could go in and talk to the owner and see what he says.. I have to get it resized anyway and could just ask about it and ask him to replace the one so it doesnt glow? Hopefully he would do it for free but if not id be willing to pay to replace it because it just looks so damn TACKY...

Thanks OTB - I got your PM

Yes,when a diamond has a lot of inclusions,it is worth less because the color and clarity is not of a superior quality. When they set small ones like that in a setting with other small ones, oftentimes they will use the remnants of other cut diamonds to create the piece. For example,if they were to cut a 1 carat diamond, they would need at least a 3-4 carat rough piece. The extra they are left with is used in smaller carat weights and settings.

My favorite diamond quote is from the movie."Donnie Braso":

"This is a f*cking fugazi."People are always bringing me their jewelry for me to "appraise".

Yes, the less inclusions the higher quality the stone. Think of the 4 C's next time you go diamond shopping: Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat

You may also see a rating such as VSI - Very Slightly Included or even more rare and expensive, VVSI - Very Very Slightly Included

and then they rate the color by letter...the higher the letter the more colorless (ie desirable) the stone. I don't know what the highest letter grading is...maybe like J?

Have you girls heard about the genuine diamonds they can now grow in the lab? They're not CZ, they actually form the same structure that a natural diamond would. Except they can't grow clear ones...only fancy colors like pink, blue and yellow. The colors are more brilliant than naturals though which tend to give them away. For the life of me I can't think of the company's name that makes these diamonds!!! Does anybody know? I am pushing hardcore for a certain somebody to spring for blue diamond stud earrings...heeheehee.

    edit:

o/t but fun to look at!

Yes,I have. Those lab grown diamonds can be purchased at 10% of the cost of naturally occuring diamonds.

Yes diamonds can glow in blacklight. They are florescence. it does not mean they it is a bad stone at all. Some diamonds have flourescence and some don't. While it is true that most stones that glow do have inclusions and other "deformaties", it's not always true.

What you want in a diamond is four things.

The four C's if you will.

Color: anywhere from a D to a Z with D being absolutly best in color for white stones. Colored stones also refered to as fancy have their own color rating scale.

Cut: this is actual shape of the stone.

Round, is the best for bringing the natural sparkle out of a stone. If you do want a round, try to get one that is closest to the 60/60 cut. The 60/60 cut is a percentage cut that if I remember correctly Harry winston used soley.

Princess (my fav) is the square cut.

    Emerald the rectangle cut

    Heart

    Trillion, is the triangle cut

    Teardrop

    Oval

Marquis, is the long oval shaped pointed cut

Assher (or cushet) is the newer cut that is a mix of the round and princess. It basically looks like a princess cut with the corners cut off and slightly rounded.

Caret: The actuall size of the stone. Also refered to as the points. Such as a 3/4ct stone would also be considered a 75 point stone.

Clarity: Which is the big thing (to me anyway). The best clarity you can get is a IF. Then to VVS1, VVS2, VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, (Si3 is used in some places but it's refered to as a I1 as far as the GIA goes) I1, I2, and then to trash diamonds.

So ultimatly for a perfect diamond you would want a IF, D, round with a 60/60 cut, and IMO at least 1.50ct, lol.

I love diamonds, and sorry for the long lesson folks. I tened to be a little long winded about things I like, lol.

many natural diamonds floresce (glow) under black lights. CZ does not glow. Not all diamonds glow.

Kitana is absolutely correct- diamonds can be "clean" and still show floresence. Usually this is shown on a GIA certificate, but "fashion" diamond rings are rarely accompanied by this. I wouldn't worry about the florescence, aside from the club, (and a tanning booth) it's not even noticable. Enjoy your new ring
