    Makeup question

For xmas I was given a $100 gift card to Macys (awesome!) and I was thinking about getting myself some nice makeup for once but I don't know what to get because my skin is very prone to breakouts and super sensitive

I've seen a few threads about MAC and how great it is, my question is would someone with skin like mine be able to use it? And does anyone have an suggestions as far as brands go? Right now I just use covergirl which wears off quickly and doesn't cover up anything.

Prescriptives is a great brand for foundation especially---they can match your skin tone pretty much to the exact shade. Great ingredients, natural colors, great for sensitive and problem skin. Their lipglosses, eyeshadows, liners are really beautiful. Plus, their black mascara is the blackest around, and goes on like buttah--no clumps. Bobby Brown has a great palette of natural colors as well. Their Desert Rose cream blush stick looks great on most skin tones. For more intense , showy and fun colors, you can't beat Nars. Mac is a mid-range line, and some of their foundations can be a bit rich for problem skin, in my experience. But they also have great novelty items--nice glitter powders and various lengths of false lashes, and carry the Duo surgical adhesive, which is best for attaching false lashes with.

A lot of girls break out w/ MAC.. Try mineral makeup (may not find at Macys) for your foundation, it made a HUGE difference in my skin, but MAC has great colors for eyes and lips.

I LOVE Bare essentials for thier powder foundation.
I have really oily skin and this stuff is amazing. It keeps me shine free all day. I only need to powder my t -zone once daily or so other than that it stays on better than any other foundation I have ever tried and covers up ever the biggest pimple. Im hooked on it and it's the only foundation I will let touch my skin.
And M.A.C pigment is an awesome eyeshadow.

Im still searching for a great eyeliner and blush. If anyone happens to know of any let me know.

Just an FYI - there is a great book out there called "Don't go to the cosmetics counter with out me" by Paula Begoun. She reviews tons of cosmetics lines and tells you what ingredients are in them and what each of those ingredients does. Nice thing is that she will also tell you what kind of reaction to the skin each of those ingredients may cause. Also she's not biased towards ANY cosmetics company so she'll tell you the real deal. Further to that if a really great expensive product has the same ingredients as a drug store cheapie she tells you that to so that you don't waste your $$ on a more expensive version of the same thing.

Maybe check it out and then you'll know what'll work with your skin before you spend your gift certificate!

Pheobe, I LOVE that book! I don't agree with everything she says, but it's a great way to find inexpensive, department store products which match/beat the high-end products. The only irritating aspect is she also sells her own beauty products, and tends to (of course) always say those are the best.

Venom, I would recommend checking out MAC eyeshadows and lipsticks. Their lipsticks stay on very well, and have a wonderful scent (I believe it's vanilla?). Have fun!

Most of the big cosmetics houses will take the products back within a reasonably short time if it turns your face into a disaster area.

Shiseido, Estee Lauder and Clinique skin care all turned my face to fine sandpaper that itched and burned. They all took it back tho'... so don't fret if it doesn't work.

I like to use a department store quality foundation, such as Clinique, I also love their skincare products. Their loose powder helps ward off oil and than if your face is pretty clear that day you can just use that over tinted moisturizer (which is probably better for your face than foundation, but I find it makes me look oily sometimes, you can get tinted moisturizer from the drugstore). Although it sounds like Nautilus didn't have good results on it, I know a lot of people who like it, so it doesn't hurt to try. I try to buy more expensive bases, mascara, and lipglosses (sometimes I opt for a cheaper brand, but it tends to dry out my lips more), but than I usually get a little less expensive eyeshadows and blushes.

I use MAC and I have fairly acne prone skin, although it is mostly in check these days. I have not seen an increase in acne problems while wearing it. My skin is mostly dry with a tendency toward blackheads.
I hear from several makeup artists that Prescriptives is great. They will color match it to your skin tone.
Whatever you get, make sure you wash it off at the end of the night. Use a moisturizer even if you have oily skin. Drying it out with toners (alcohol) only makes your skin want to re-hydrate itself and produce too much oil to overcompensate.
Make sure you exfoliate too, to get rid of dead skin cells that clog pores.

P.S. (edit) - Clinique is garbage. I have not met one person who likes this product.

    Magdalena,
MAC's eyeliner in "Engraved" is the only black pencil I will use. I go through it like crazy. I wish they sold it in bulk.

Nars makes great blushes. I was once addicted to Lancome's "Pink Pool", but I think they discontinued it.

I think for problem skin you can't beat Bare Minerals. It cleared my monthly breakouts right up.

I also like Aveda's Powder Foundation. It works well too to clear up problems.

Mac is killing my skin. Its making it so dry that even when I wash it off my face feels like a parched lemon for days afterwards. I put tons of cream on my face first and then use Mac powder/foundation on. Am I doing something wrong? Is there something I should be putting on my face first to hydrate it more before I use it?

just get samples of everything. if you have Nordstroms in your area you are in luck, they are very generous with samples.

mac broke me out too, but then i hear their foundations are made with photogr. in mind and really are best for photoshoots and to be removed right away after. that's what i used studiofix for. great coverage, crap formula.

I'm only using Bobbi Brown extra tinted balm spf 25 from now on. after going thru all of my samples, this is what i'll get in full size when this sample runs out. extra light shade is the only one light enough for me (and doesn't turn orange as the day/night goes on), it actually moisturizes, and never broke me out. absolutely everything else does. spf is full spectrum, yay! oh, and inspite of being a tinted moisturizer, it's got a very good coverage.

BB creamy concealer is my grail. Love her Pale Pink blush too. Kinda like Nars Desire, but a little brighter, and gives me that Snow White look.

I really like clinique's foundations, powders, and concealers. That is just my opinion though. Everyone has different skin.
