Mexico- one and a half months. Best place on earth.
Saint Thomas, USVI- one month of heaven on earth. I had to pinch myself every morning to make sure I was still living. (The work booking was a nightmare, but that's another tale. That drama didn't even ruin the experience.)
New Haven, Connecticut- three weeks, I laughed when I drove past Yale- "I came to New Haven to take my clothes off!" Great food!
Erie, Pennsylvania- three weeks, liked it a lot. Presque Isle is very pretty.

Been to a lot of beautiful places, so here's my top 3:

    Hawaii
    Cancun
    Bahamas

Hmmm there seems to be a similar theme in those 3 places.

Sorry can't help on the hiking/camping though as my idea of camping is the Motel 6.

I loved Jamaica,Negril. The weather there was picture perfect. But The most interesting ,and I would have to say most adveturous place /Vacation, would have to be Mexico.I traveled there with my high school sweetheart .The first place we went in Mexico was Cozumel.(great for scuba diving)We went everywhere you could imagine in Mexico,From the jungles in Palainke' (most breathtaking) to Merida City, and rented a car to see all the Myan Ruins through out mexico. Then after about 12 days we went to Cancuun for 3 days to relax!

St. Martin. My stateside fave's are Key West for the lad-back party atmosphere, South Beach for the wild upscale party atmosphere and of course, my favorite city in the US, Tampa! Vegas is always fun. oh how could I forget....New Orleans for Mardi Gras!

I went on a cruise a couple of years ago and it went to Jamaica, Hispaniola, Mexico and Cayman Islands. We woke up one morning anchored in Hispaniola and thought is was the most beautiful sight I had ever woke up to. Royal Caribbean owned this area and it was completely deserted. The hills were very lush and green. The water was this beautiful turquoise. Residing in the area were natives selling beautiful hand-crafted items. I wouldn't go on such a big cruise ship again. I did enjoy sailing but the experience was to touristy for me. Mexico wasn't bad either. People are very friendly and accomodating. Plus the dugs stores sell most medicines which are prescribed in the states.

Toronto, Canada had a lot of variety. Too much to do in the three days we were there. Niagara Falls is a must see. Something I really wanted to do is visit, Chinatown, Cabbagetown and Little Italy. Shopping is excellent there as well.

Good God woman...you REALLY need to get out more if New Haven, or for that matter anywhere in Ct, placed on your list. Yes the architechture is cool, there were some famous trials in the 60's(Bobbie Seals), some of the clubs have history, Yale U is there, Albertus Magnus is there(haunted buildings and all) but the town sucks ass... it's become a GIANT ghetto where even I, who roamed the streets for most of my teen years, don't feel safe any longer

The best places I've visited have been in no order:
    San Diego
    Hawaii
    Memphis(but don't tell Rhia)
    Florida
    Maine(in the summer..I'm no dummy)
    New Hampshire
    Arizona

New Haven CT- Hmm, some of the dancers at Stagedoor Johnny's claimed the current club site is haunted/cursed....& yep the area is pretty hardcore. But it was "different" to me, a NorCal bumpkin. The food just knocked me out. Best Italian cuisine ever.

Oh, you know what's funny, I always forget my neck of the woods is a big tourist attraction because of Yosemite National Park & San Francisco. Probably from having to struggle to afford living here. LOL

Salzburg, Austria is one of the prettiest places I've ever seen.
Tambor, Costa Rica was the most relaxing time of my life.

Backpacking rocks! But backpackers hostels suck. *shudder*. Once I passed the age of 20, all the joy of rooming with snoring Germans and Aussies wore off. Sleep rough or go 4 star- there's no in between

Tasmania is the world's best-kept secret. If I didn't have to work, I would retire there and spend all my time hiking in those beautiful glittery pink misty mountains or partying in Hobart or enjoying the wineries. It's just a quick overnight ferry hop from Melbourne, and you can bring a car on the ferry. There are also airports in Hobart and Launceston.

Ha! See, then you must know it's not red-neckish here. Very urban, except if you're in the burbs. Even then though, it can still be.

In addition to Memphis, I've been to...

    Illinois (Zion)

Guantanamo Bay, Cuba (You can't go there, though.. We did almost years there.)

    Virginia (Norfolk & Newport News)

    Arizona (Peoria)

    And of course...

    Rhode Island

I really wouldn't recommend taking a trip to any of those except maybe here in Memphis, and maybe AZ. Nothing to see in RI, really, especially this time of year. In VA, you'll just see Navy boys and ships. Yay.

I have done the backpacking around Europe thing, and that was fun. but I agree with Scarlett....AVOID THE HOSTELS. Ugh. We only stayed in one, and even then we ended up taking our backpacks with us and locking them up at the train station when we went roaming the city at night. I shall cast my vote for Amsterdam. Again, not because of the weed or anything like that...it's just such a cool place. it's like the crossroads of Europe, we ran into so many different people there from all over the world. The architecture is great, the canals are beautiful, Vondelpark was amazing etc etc. Mainly for me it was just the friendliness of the people there, and just relaxing riding a bike around all day. Plus, the "country" is a 25 minute train ride away. It's nowhere near as fun or cheap anymore since the introduction of the Euro, but it still gets my vote.

I really liked paris, too, and I had no problem with the people whatsoever, despite what everyon says about the french. Germany was cool, too but I HATED London. Maybe that was just me. Filthy and dirty and uberexpensive and BLECH. Nice museums though.

Overall, I'm not a fan of most of the beachy sunny islandy places, really. I grew up in Florida, so I think I've had enough of that. I had a nice vacation in Colorado Springs once ...in fact I got married there. >:~)

hmm, I've been there.... maybe being stationed there is better than just visiting... I can't believe it made the list.... it's surrounded by barbed wire and mine fields... I bet the rest of Cuba is a lot more fun...

I absolutely LOVE Poland, especially Krakow. The people are the friendliest i've met anywhere in the world. The most beautiful place i've see would have to be the center of Australia, the Kimberleys' and Broome in north west Australia are just stunning.
I've been backpacking alot recently, through se asia, europe and central america and i have to agree that hostels suck! I've stayed in many of them and they send me crazy. The usual backpacker is oblivious to others around them( ironic, i know) . For this reason i'd suggest holidaying somewhere in South East Asia. Its cheap as to get there and you can get decent rooms for under $10us a night, as most hostels in Europe, the States and Australia charge at least this much for a bed in a dorm room. You can also get cheap rooms all over Central America if you aren't in the middle of the tourist areas but they are still a little more than Asia.
There are travel books such as Lonely Planet, Rough Guide and Lets Go that give you heaps of great info on places to stay, things to see and transport etc. There is also the Lonely Planet 'thorn tree' forum online to discuss things with heaps of other travellers.
You'll always pay too much if you go through an agent or tour operator, but that can be cool too if you want a totally stress free break.
    Happy Holidays!!!!!!!!!!

My travels are limited and all inside the continental U.S., but here goes:

Las Vegas - I usually stay a week when I visit, which would be overkill for most people, but I love it because its such an unstructured vacation. You only have to be at the airport in time for your flight out, what you do between checking into your hotel and then is up to you, and there's no shortage of things to do. You don't even need a car.

San Antonio - Beautiful downtown architecture, rich history, and great nightlife. Admission to the Alamo, the shrine of Texas, is free (although they'd like a donation). Wish I had stayed there a little longer.

    for a bit quieter experience:

Yellowstone/Teton/Jackson Hole area of Wyoming - A bit opposite of my other choices but the scenery is breathtaking. Just don't get too close to the buffalo if you see one. I hear the skiing is pretty good in the winter too.

Black Hills, South Dakota - Beautiful scenery much like Yellowstone. There are gambling towns nearby, plus Wind Cave N.P. and Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse monument. The bike rally at Sturgis is in August.

Colorado Springs - Probably one of the most scenic backdrops you'll ever see with Pikes Peak looming over the city. The Garden of the Gods park on the west side (free to enter) is a must visit, esspecially if you go around sunset. Bring your camera.
