Default Who taught you how apply makeup

I'm just curious how everyone has learned to apply makeup. I was raised by my father and he would make rude remakrs about how ugly I was when I was young and told me I needed to wear makeup.

Well, I'm confident in my looks and I'm not drop dead ugly, but I know I could never win a beauty contest.

Anywho, I have really thin lips, I'm trying to figure out how to make them look bigger without having to have implants in my lips. Are there any style books or magazines that would give me tips on how to do this. Lipstick looks silly on me, no matter what the color, and I think its because my lips are so thin, but they are so pale, and I think lipstick is sexy, but it just draws attention to my thin lips.

So anyways, yeah, any good books or magazines or websites to get to show me how its done??

    Thanks!!

I was taught by another dancer how to do makeup. I know some girls swear by lipliner to make their lips look fuller with a matching lipstick. You can get natural colours that dont draw to much attention to your lips but help them look fuller.

I was taught by the best - a drag queen. I also did a lot of research and experimentation with makeup throughout the years. Makeup art is one of my passions.
I don't have DSLs, but I can fake it pretty well.

If you want to make your lips appear fuller without injections, OVER line them slightly, but not so much that you look like you're trying too hard. Just outside your natural lip line is the right spot. Make sure your pencil has a nice sharp point on it. Never use cheap lip liner (MAC makes the best!) because it's waxy and will bleed into the surrounding pores and/or lines of your face.
Always use a moisturizer before applying makeup, even to your lips.
Try using a slightly darker liner and then a lighter lipstick shade in neutral colors. Light browns/tans are great. A glossy neutral or burgundy is good for strip clubs. These colors also make your teeth look whiter. NEVER use bright whore-red or bright pink lipstick at the club as it will make your face look washed out in the seductive SC lighting.
Blend a little gold shimmer powder on fattest part of the lower lip (the center) to create the illusion of plumpness. It attracts light to the parts that SHOULD be fuller.
Don't use silvery shades of lipstick if you have thin lips. I think it makes girls look old and strangely unapproachable. It gives off the 'ice princess' vibe in a bad way.

If you don't want to wear the perfectly applied/lined lipstick of the bombshell and want to look a little more natural, you can also do the "stained" thing and dab some burgundy on with your finger and lightly blend it by moving your lips back and forth. This gives off a fresh look without looking too fake. Tap a little gloss in the top and bottom centers of your lips to highlight, blend with your finger and you look like you just drank some Kool-Aid without the moustache. It's a delicate way to give the lower half of your face some color without drawing too much attention to the lips.

Concentrate your makeup skills on your EYES. Draw attention toward your best features. Wear fake eyelashes, dark shadow or bright colors. Flirt with other parts of your body.

Experiment!! Invest in some good products and NEVER believe that you are ugly no matter what anyone says!! My father used to come down on me for wearing makeup (kinda the opposite of your experience) so it made me want to wear it more.

    MAC!
I recommend you call ahead of time and make an appt so you can get total one-on-one time. Otherwise you may have to share your artist with 10 other divas.
Now, some of you may disagree with me...

    Go with a fresh face..
Lip waxed, eyebrows groomed, no make-up and dont forget your breath mints.

The reason why I say this is because you get to be dolled up at your best. If you went there with a face full of yesterdays make-up (for exageration sake) you probably wont get the full "MAC" experience.

Have them recommend some beautiful colors, and dont be afraid to try something new. We have all (ok most) been guilty of hanging on to our "comfort" look.
Ask LOTS of questions, You can even have the artist do one eye, then you do the other! I would also tell you to invest in a set of good make-up brushes.
I've found that even if you decide to wear a lesser quality shadow, a good brush can make it look FABULOUS!
I believe its still a 40$ minimun purchase, but well worth it. then..just practice practice practice!

    PS
I'm sorry you had a verbally abusive father. My parents were "limited" as well. I hope that in your heart you know that you are not ugly. That really is a horrible thing to say to someone you are supposed to love!
    Heck! I love you girlie!

    Sincerley,
    Phaty~

I watched the dancers I admired, checked out celeb mags and practiced... Plus I bought make-up nooks by Kevin Aucoin as well as porn magazines, Hustler and Penthouse have the best make-up on their stars, Playboy is too natural for me.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

When I was younger my mother sent me to Charm Schools, ettiquette schools...etc on how to be the perfect lady. I learned alot about how to apply makeup there... I also am an Independent Beauty Consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics as well...they have classes to teach women how to put on makeup and my division actually has a couple hollywood Makeup Artists come in and teach us consultants the latest techniques in makeup that is all the rage in Hollywood...

I've been "experimenting" and playing with make-up since I can remember (I remember raiding my mom's make-up cases and such since I was about 3 years old).

I've read every make-up book out there and I'm not afraid to ask questions at the MAC store...nor am I afraid to experiement with colors.

It's all about practice, practice and more practice.

For thin lips, you can use clove oil/cinnamon oil blends to plump up your lips. Go to the health food store, or buy the product Lipvenom.

I taught myself, & do OK....however, my sister is NOT a stripper & her self-taught skills were so good, the local MAC offered her a job. Love to brag about that. (PS There are MAC stores & MAC counters at malls. The website has a locator.)

Let's see... my first experiments were on my giant Barbie styling head when I was a tot. Anyone remember those? Then there was my trusty Seventeen magazine when I got a little older. When I started working for cosmetic lines as a sales associate, I was educated by industry leaders from Shiseido, Chanel, Nars, YSL and Laura Mercier. Did that for eight years. I'm currently a cosmetology student. Our half day teachings on artistry is nothing more than an outdated how to video so I'm the guest instructor this friday.

I agree with the whole learning to "over" line your lips. You might want to start with a liner taht's as close to your natural lipcolor as you can get, maybe slightly more intense. Pair that up with a very sheer neutral lipcolor (Laura Mercier makes really pretty sheer shades, look for the colors who's name starts with Bare) and a touch of light, shimmerry gloss at the center of your lips. The statigically placed dab of gloss will give the illusion of fullness and wear longer than a full mouth of it. I erred on the side of caution with the color recommendation since you seem to have a bit of a love-hate relationship with lipcolor.

The best peice of advice I can give to thosr looking for the "perfect" shade of lipstick is look at the whole picture. Most women get so obsessed with their lipstick that they stare at thier lips when trying on colors. When you become this fixated, you'll never find what you're looking for. Everything will seem too something... Instead, try the lipcolor on and step back to look at your entire face. A pretty shade on the lips will do more for the eyes than all the shadow in the world, it'll make 'em sparkle. It's hard to explain, but you'll get it
    when you see it.

I encourage you to go up to an strong color line like MAC, Laura Mercier, Trish McEvoy or YSL and get an instructional make over. Explain what you want to acheive, bring in pictures from magazines as a visual guideline and put a little trust in the person painting your face.

I've always experimented with make up. My aunt thought I'd grow up to be a cosmetoligist(sp) but I never stuck with it. She gave me this fantastic book when I was 18. It's called "Making Faces" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/031...89462?n=283155

I still look at the book when I am going for a certain type of look.

Yes, I do!! I didn't have one myself, but some of my friends did. Why is it that Barbie was always bald or had a stringy rat's nest on her head?

I never became a professional cosmetologist, but always studied and experimented with different types of techniques. I am, however, my bf's personal makeup artist. He can't even do his own makeup anymore because I have spoiled him. I fear I have started to do the same to my band. I am always running around with an eyeshadow brush during our photo shoots.

From makeup artists at shoots & stuff.

I still suck at doing my own makeup- I just kind of smear some lipstick and eyeshadow on, lol. I think I will take a trip to the MAC counter soon.
