    Default Hitch - the movie

was anyone else ticked off at this movie? I'm not really hot for romantic comedies (although I will confess shame that I found Will Smith kind of charming at some points). I just don't like them. But these "romances" that essentially consist of the plain-jane someone (usually a guy) eventually scoring the "hot" other - and why? Like the whole "conflict" is the fact that the person is looking "above" themselves. If they are so damn unattractive why, in the name of god, is he not seeking unattractive women to spend time with? Why is only the rich heiress good enough? I mean, the rich heiress wanting someone equivalently rich and good looking is just normal - that is her finding her level. It's the average joe who is the snob.

Don't get me wrong - I have no problem (either in real life or the movies) with the attractive dating the less attractive or less conventionally attractive. But when we are constructing these guys as somehow DESERVING these women; like somehow they are too good to date the unattractive, although the attractive people they want to date can't share that sentiment.

Jenny, why did you watch this movie? I could tell it would piss me off from the trailer alone.

Speaking of romantic comedies, I watched Elizabethtown while stranded in Houston this week and found it perfectly charming, couldn't figure out why everyone hated it so, so I may have awful taste.

I can't watch too many Hollywood movies because I too tend to get bogged down in analyzing the story and its message - and the stories/messages are always crap in Hollywood.

I really only watch these movies when I want some mindless entertainment. When I shut my brain down, I can enjoy the garbage for what it is - time to kickback and rest the thinker for a bit.

I did watch the movie and found it rather entertaining. I especially liked the super cheeeeese-o-rama wedding scene at the end. LOL

I actually really liked the movie and thought it was funny. I mean, Pretty Woman (though she's pretty the rich guy would have to deal with the baggage of the prostitute past) does the same thing in reverse: is a person who is worthy on the inside able to get the other person regardless of a difference in class/money/looks?
The guy who played the heiress's true love was funny--and the heiress was trapped in her own life, feeling like she was a dork, couldn't dance, and didn't fit in--so in that way I think they were evenly matched.
don't you have that experience in your head when you're dating someone: you're a total goofball, but you think "wow, if this guy knew I was a stripper, I wonder if the goofballness would be okay since there might be pressure to live up to this superhot image."

I enjoyed the movie too... I saw it from a different perspective though. It seemed like he was fascinated with something about her (other than her looks) and that he saw something good that he could identify with in her. I didn't think that he was below her, I think he just thought of himself as below her until Hitch helped him out.... you know, the whole you are as you perceive yourself thing. For instance if you carry yourself like you're Somebody, you are, but if you carry yourself like you're a loser, you are. I agree he wasn't on the same level of attractiveness, but really, how important is that in the scope of who a person is?

In addition to seeing something good in her and being drawn to her, he saw that she (appeared at least in the public eye) was very confident and sure of herself, something that he was not... so he was intimidated. Remember when he was in that meeting w/her other financial advisors, and he saw how she let them walk all over her? I think that made him realize she was human, just like him, and the very qualities that prevented/intimidated him from speaking to her weren't really there. Does this make any sense or am I just imagining that?

the problem is that you almost never see a version of hitch with the pudgy unappealing party being female and the rich hot person being male.

There was that "my big fat stupid greek whatever-it-was" movie.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

^^But her love interest in that movie was definitely not rich, and not especially attractive, IMO.

I agree that I can usually figure out how much I'll hate a movie by its trailer. I have special movie trailer ESP. So I haven't seen Hitch. And tonight, despite my intuitive misgivings, I saw Memoirs of a Geisha, and it was as disapointing as I had anticipated. I wish I had these feelings about the stock market instead.

Maybe the message is more along the lines of unattractive people not being LESS deserving rather than an entitlement thing.

    J/K

May I request permission to please take a break from the humdrum of propsal writing and tear this thread a new asshole? You guys know I'll do it respectfully. But there is so much truth here. Being the unattractive male that siphons off the hope of these cookie-cutter 2+ hour-long hallmark commercials that serve as a 9 parts 'buy into the hope of having something like this' and 1 part 'Good luck, douchebag', I have opinions?

I wasn't ticked by it. I was entertained and i didn't give it much thought. What kind of ticked me was how the main characters fell inlove w/ each other in 3 dates. Of course, a movie.

I've always wondered why it seems people fall in love and get married in 4 dates and live happily ever after in movies. 40 Year Old Virgin pissed me off... they were buying eachother expencive gifts and he was fathering her kids in a week... bleh sometimes movies piss me off.

^^^Haha, they call it "suspension of disbelief" or whatever, but I know, it gets tired. I like the odd time they work away from type, like "In Good Company".

I get annoyed when my disbelief is being unnecessarily stoked by a film, to the point of absurdity. It's not really a spoiler, so here I'll bitch a little: In the beginning of "Memoirs of a Geisha", the family is all speaking Japanese. Then the little girls go off to Osaka, and miracuously they're all speaking heavily accented English. Why the Japanese in the first place? So silly...it's almost better when they all had vaguely English accents when playing foreign characters (circa thirty years ago). Why bother with characters in a foreign land all speaking English with random accents (see Nic Cage's pizza commercial attempt at an Italian accent in "Captain Corelli's Mandolin"...or not, because it's a shitty movie)? Ok, end of rant.

My "Memoirs of a Geisha" rant:

This is a JAPANESE story, with JAPANESE characters. There is no such thing as a Chinese geisha. So who stars in this movie? Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li, Michelle Yeoh, and Chow Yun-Fat. All Chinese.

    *sigh*

I thought the guy in My Big Fat Greek Wedding was hot (but he was even hotter as Carrie's BF in Sex and the city)

And Drew Barrymore was very unattractive initially in My first Kiss, and she ends up with the hot Alias guy (not rich, but still)

I'll keep thinking about movies because while I know the tendency seems to be for ugly guys to get with hot girls, it's not THAT unusual to see exceptions

Hitch wasn't a horrible film, though I hated the end. Lots of good tips in the film, actually. Like a seriously condensed and sanitized version of strategies you'd find in Fast Seduction.

Ooooh! I LOVED Michael Vartan in "Never Been Kissed". I liked him in "The Next Best Thing" (with Madonna) too, but he was the best paired with Drew.
