    Default Acne Scars

I haven't been breaking out much lately because I've been taking better care of my skin, and I've been using Acne Free, which is like the generic version of Proactive. My problem is that I have a lot of acne scars from when I was younger, and even some fresh scars from recently. I was wondering if anyone has tried the at-home microdermabrasion kits, like the Neutrogena kit, or any of the chemical peels that they have in stores. I saw that Neutrogena has an acne scar fading gel now, and I was wondering if anyone has tried any of these things, and if they work at all. I would love to go get a professional chemical peel, but I just can't afford it right now. If anyone has suggestions on what to use, I would appreciate it. Most of my scars are reddish/purple marks (which show up well on my very pale skin) and some of the scars are actually indentations in my skin (not very big or deep though). My skin tends to get very dry from a lot of skin products, so I need to use something that is somewhat gentle, if possible. Any help would be great!!!

The store dermabrasion does not work. If you want to get rid of indents, please see a doctor. Indents require agressive treatments.

Try a good vitamin serum. I use Nichole Miller. It is slow, but it works.

Time...all you can do is wait. In the meantime, a good fake tan will camouflage the red marks.

Like Scarlett said, time will fade the red/purplish discolorations. As far as the indents go, home microdermabrasion kits as well as topical retinoids (retin-a, tazorac, etc.) and AHA products will smooth your skin and lessen the appearance of acne scars, although they will not get rid of them.

I had horrible acne for years that left me with scars. A few years ago, I had a laser resurfacing to correct the scars. While it's very expensive, it was so worth it! My skin is close to flawless (and I'm gettin' older! Not bragging but I look WAY younger than my real age and it's because of the resurfacing). I highly recommend it. If you want more info, PM me. I know what you're going through. The scars are almost as traumatic as the acne.

Topical retinoids are better for acne itself, but you have to use them very consistantly and you'll be sensitive to the sun. Azelex is a good candidiate for treating acne and fading scars. Another good option is hydroquinine creams, which are available in both OTC and prescription. I used hydroquinone cream on some really nasty self-mutilation scars on my breasts that I sis with a soldering iron when I was 15 and suicidal, and the discoloration is gone. The only thing that's left is the fact the scar tissue is slightly raised.

Lancome makes a GREAT skin lightener. I don't remember what it's called but it workes really well to reduce redness from old breakouts. I have the same problem. My skin tone is very pink and if i get pimple, I am red for MONTHS even is the surface is smooth and clear.

There is another product you can try that is a professional spa product and a little hard to find but totally worth it. It's by Karin Hertzog. There is a website or you can order it from a spa website. PM me if you want more info on where to order it. It's an oxygen based product that works like a bleach for your skin. 1 week of consistant use and the redness is GONE. you have to be careful of clothes and eyebrows as it will lighten those things, too.

Im the meantime, try Laura Mercier's camoflauge concealer or MAC studio finish. They cover very well.

Yes acne scars, the bane of my existance! I've had several chemical peels, done professionally at a dermatologists office. These do nothing for scars, so i really doubt the home stuff will do anything at all. Dont waste your money. For a while the Smoothbeam laser was all the rage and supposedly the cure for lightly indented acne scars. Been there done that, $1500 later and it does nothing! It made no difference at all for acne scars but very slight improvement(maybe) on fine lines. Microdermabrasion, I've had several and it does not make any difference. Microdermabrasion combined with an acid peel, had three, still nope nothing!!

As for the red spot left after a breakout, the absolute worst thing you can do is expose it to sunlight. The sunlight darkens the spot, and it will hang around longer, even for periods of six months or more! There is a laser treatment Yag laser or something like that supposedly works really well to remove red spots. I've never had that one my self, so I can't tell you for sure if it really works or is the next line of money wasting bs.

The only thing that has ever worked on my indented scars is a collagen fill. The doc uses a syringe to fill the indent with collagen and raises the dent so it is even with the rest of the skin. This gets pricy and is only temporary. The treatments run about $300 and have to be redone every 2 months or so as the collagen is absorbed.

Good luck! If you find anything that actually works please drop me a note about it!

Zebrina, I'm in the same boat as you. I've spend thousands trying to get rid of indents. The last procedure I've had was a $1000 chemical peel. What a big waste of money.

Thanks guys! I used Mederma on the scars from my knee surgery, and I don't think it really helped at all. The scars on my knee are a little lighter, but that is probably just because of time. I think I will go see a dermatologist to see what he suggests. My acne isn't bad anymore, and I could actually get away with wearing no makeup if it wasn't for my scars. But thanks for all the advice!

I have the same problem on my forehead. I have not done it yet but my dermatologist recommended Laser resurfacing. I am saving to buy a house this year but next year I definitely want to get it done.
