How many inches should the heels be? I'm 5'7", if that helps. Also, I don't want to buy new shoes unless I know for sure I'm going to be hired (broke student) so would it be OK if I wore my three inch platform sandals to the audition?
Thanks!![]()

you can find amazing low-priced footwear at hot topic in the mall. i guess that you just need shoes that make you arch your back.![]()

Regardless of their height, most dancers wear shoes with a heel anywhere from 5-8" in height, most with a platform. Platform heels are more comfortable than stilettoes and easier to wear for long periods of time.
You're probably fine wearing your own shoes to the audition unless it's an upscale club that doesn't hire newbies.
call the club and ask if they have specific requirements for the heels, then wear your own if they are ok for the audition. but don't spend money on shoes that aren't made for strippers, it's a waste. i'm super clumsy and awkward and tried to get away with wearing regular stilettoes and once i bought real shoes it made a world of difference and was therefore an investment. ask people where you audition/work where they sell stripper gear in your area and invest asap. usually the people at the store are very helpful too, and dont be afraid to tell them you are new and need advice.
I only wear 5 or 6 inch platform shoes because they are the most comfortable for me, and the easiest for me to move around in. What type of audition are you going to? Is it an amateur night? If so, then wear the heels you already have. If it is and audition on stage in front of customers but not an amateur night, then I would suggest buying some inexpensive dancer shoes. If you are serious about wanting to dance, then even if you don't get hired by the club you first try out at, you will at least have the dancer shoes so you can try out at a different club.
The rule of thumb is that you want a shoe where the heel is 4 or more inches higher than the toe (though people with really small feet need less rise), because that's the sort of "magic height" where it makes you back arch, your butt stick out, your tummy suck in, and your boobs stick out. Platforms can be harder to dance in, at least for me, since it makes it harder to feel the floor; platforms are more comfortable, though.
If you've got a week or two, I'd suggest buying something off of www.electriqueboutique.com
They have plenty of shoes, many of which are rather cheap. And even if you don't get the job, I like to wear mine out to nightclubs sometimes, particularly with really long dresses or overlong pants.

you should get these:![]()

hmmm...there are locks on them so that you can't take them off, and they're impossible to walk in. i wonder...![]()
Hah! Leather Pointe boots. Veeery strange.

they're "fetish" shoes from:Originally Posted by itsbecca

when I first started I wore my own 3 inch platforms, they looked stupid, but I was comfortable, there was no heel requirement. After a few days, I bought some 6 inchers w/ a strap, so I didn't fall on my ass. I was kinda glad I wore my own shoes for a few shifts, b/c I got used to moving around on stage. Check ebay for shoes, I bought a nice pair for like $30

i have tiny feet and it's awful.... a five inch spike heel on a size 6 foot is so much more precarious than it is on a size 9! so remember, if you have little feet like me, look into ones with small platforms under the toes.

A lot of clubs say as long as you have SOME heel, any heels will do... I know a lot of girls who use shoes like these:

But make sure the club in question runs that way. If not, I'd start with the plain ol 5" stripper shoes.

Wow, thank you all so much! I received so much great advice on this thread, in addition to the help from other shoe questions. I did go to Hot Topic today, but the shoe selection was quite small. But Deb was having a store closing sale, and I bought some platform, open-toe black sandals for around $15. I haven't measured the heel yet, but they seem around 4". Because I'm just starting out (and I'm rather clumsy), I think this would be a good start. Thank you all for your help! When I finally get started and get some extra cash, I will invest in some proper shoes.![]()

Also invest in some inserts for under the ball of your foot and some non-slip grip pads for the soles of the shoes. You should always have extras in your bag.

I have size 5.5 feet and I usually wear 8 1/2" heels. Talk about precarious. But I'm only 5'4" so I like the height difference enormously (no pun intended). It gives me a giddy feeling to be tall, for once in my life. If you're not quite sure about your comfort level in heels on slippery stages with dark and/or blinking lights start low.... but then... the sky is the limit.![]()

I'd invest in some authentic stripper shoes...
