    Default iPod peripherials

So I got an iPod for christmas (along with every other person in the U.S). I want to be able to play it out my home stereo system. Any recommendations on equipment to do this? Hubby says to go to the Apple store for info, but I thought I'd check with the music experts first...

    Thanks,
    Kat

I better just be sure not to drive too fast on the 101 or I'll get a ticket.

My mom and sister live in Mesa, maybe I should just holler out my car window as I drive by???

    Thanks for the iPod info!

Whatever you do dont buy the FM transmitter, for your car it sucks, unless you want to listen to static!!

Damn, not too far...I probably could shout, it's just a mile or two away...

One is near Val Vista and Brown, the other is near Brown and Lindsey.

Okay, totally off topic, but did you hear about that inspirational teacher at Mountain View High? He returned to teach Math for the first time after having his legs and arms amputated due to a rare blood disorder. Amazing how brave people can be!

NOT TRUE! There is a REALLY good one out there that I just bought and it's pretty damn near close to CD quality! I have gone through three for my Ipod and the first two really sucked. The first was the crappy Griffin one which sits on top of the Ipod. It was a complete waste. The second was the Monster FM transmitter which can only be used in your car and it was mediocre, but it lost a lot of sound quality in the highs and lows. I talked with somone and they said to get the DLO FM Transmitter. It was expensive compared to others...$99.00. It too can only be used in a cig lighter port but DAMN is it good. I get a very tiny amount of background noise with it when music is extremely quiet and the volume is high, but for just about any kind of music, I'd almost swear it was my CD player. It's really that good! Best buy has it here:

As for accessories to play it on your home stereo, you need to find out what kind of line-in your stereo has. If it's a nice stereo system, it will probably have an AUX input as a Left and Right RCA Port (usually red and white colored) on the back. So you will need to get a splitter/adapter for your ipot to hook up to the stereo. Radio Shack is your best bet. You will need an 1/8" Stereo Male to RCA Stereo adapter cable. Here is the link for that:

Thats awesome that you found one to work, mine sucked and i didnt want to keep buying more because i figured they would all work the same.

This is what i bought that suckedhttp://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=166893

So i wanted a new CD player for my car cause i still had my stock one so i bought this for my ipod...http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1099388650606
I love it soo much. The names of the songs come up and you can control the ipod through the CD palyer because it was hard for me to control my ipod while drivin. lol. And i can hide my ipod in my glove box. Its a really good investment. You can get a cheaper CD player that does the same thing, but i bought the more expensive one.

That little Belkin transmitter is a waste. Looks like they're making solutions for Ipod owners like your stereo which is cool!

I got a Nano for Festivus myself. I'd be into some accessorization for that since my regular speakers suckass, but everything I saw in the window at Sharper Image for the 30 whole seconds I looked appeared to be made for the standard Ipod.

The bose sound dock is amazing and I highly reccomend it, it takes that place of huge speakers and quality is amazing.

But if you use a nano with the dock the remote control does not work. Which is a bit annoying.

Hey 242 Fair, thanks for recommendation on the Bose system. I wanted to buy one for private parties when they don't have a stereo, or if it's in an off-site location. I'm glad you like yours!

I ended up just buying a monster cable. Works great, I can play all my favorite songs throughout the house. It's also an easy option for hooking up my iPod for private parties (until I buy a Bose system!).

(On a side note...Blade, I was in your neck of the woods today. I stopped by the Petco at Gilbert and Uni. Isn't that near you? A very cute guy (who looked similar to your picture) helped me buy a crate for my dog. Any chance you're moonlighting there?)

Just to update this thread a bit, be VERY aware which Ipod you have because some models are not compatible with some hardware. I just went through a rediculous learning lesson with my ipods and now I hate Apple even more than I did before. I just wish this damn company would go bankrupt already!!!!

Anyway, there are six different generations of Ipods, and depending on which model you have, you may have compatability issues with both 3rd party hardware or even with Apple's own hardware. It's insane. I have an older Ipod (3rd generation) which my wife uses. The battery started to go bad in it and I later found out that this generation Ipod was built with bad batteries to the point where Apple lost a class-action lawsuit back in October regarding this matter. It's complicated. Anyway, she mostly uses it plugged-in so it's not that big of an issue but recently she lost the charger and cable. Thinking Ipods were Ipods, I went over to Wal-Mart and got another one. It didn't work. Why? Because Generaltions 1, 2, and 3 of the Ipod use a different charger than 4, 5 and 6 do even though they look identical. This compatability issue makes it to where you have to order this special charger (at $30.00 plus the special cable that goes with it for another $20.00) direct from the Apple Store. Crazy.

Now, regarding more modern Ipods, the new video Ipods (generation 6) are not compatible with any top-mounting periferals such as your remote controls, some FM Transmitters, microphones, etc. Why? Because Apple decided not to put the small adapter port on top of this latest Ipod whereas they did on the previous 5 models. So anything you want to use with your Ipod that goes on top cannot be used. Just something to be aware of when making your decision to buy one. If this is important to you, you may want to get a 5th generation Ipod (called the "Color Ipod" or "Photo Ipod" as it's the same device minus the video. If watching rock videos on a 1" screen is important to you, then be aware you may have a lot of compatability issues with many of the toys out there.
