Nope - but they are really only for times of intense anxiety not really for everday . At least that is how my Doc has prescribed mine . I have a full bottle of them but I rarely take them anymore as I no longer work at the place that gave me the axiety in the first place lol .

Xanax is ONE of the safest drugs to take! After i had a second baby i was on 3 pills daily for PPD. It's hard to overdose and kill yourself on Xanax (sure people have) but much much alcohol and a bottle of 30 will do it without immediate attention.

This drug is in the Benzo. family, has been reported to have mild antidepressent properties as well! But the down side. The half life of this drug is VERY short in the body, so most people try to keep a steady flow of the med. in them.

Not easy to wean off of, i needed my doctors help..but do-able. I would not advise doing it alone however if you have been on the drug for 6 months or longer.

Again everyone is different. Side effects are pretty damn rare with this drug.

I don't mean the dizzy feeling you get at first, or the dry mouth, or very sleepy etc. I mean rashes, hard time breathing etc. The later are allergic reactions.

You're right Pamela but some docs are reluctant to prescribe this med because of the short half-life and tendency to get addicted to it. I have found that most doctors would rather prescribe klonopin, which I take, it has a longer half-life and the outcome is the same.

I need to try it for test anxiety. I have major test anxiety and have an important test coming up that I always freeze up on and get sweaty and nervous as soon as it starts.

I was on depakote a while back for migraines. I don't think it helped that. I found out years later that it can make your hair fall out.

echo was everyone else said about xanax....i took it for anxiety awhile back, and it made me calm and fall asleep. bad thing to drink on though....years ago i took a 2mg bar at work, had a few too many drinks, and blacked out for 5-6 hours, meaning i have only brief flashes of memory, but was semi-talking/moving/comatose. apparently i was mumbling about angels and bright lights, so my friends dragged me into a shower and tried to wake me up, and i came to many hours later with a bad headache.

taken carefully, it can work for you if it works well with your body chemistry.....just listen to your doc, and, like pamela said, don't stop cold turkey if you take it for long periods of time, especially at a large doage. some people have had seizures (extreme level) or rebound anxiety/insomnia (minor level) from going off benzos, but it's not really common (correct me if i'm wrong). are you thinking of taking it for panic attacks, generalized anxiety, or some other reason?

Other than possible addiction, don't think so. Oh, and never drink when you take it! Black holes in memory guaranteed.

    Cautionary tale:

I was on xanax years ago. Took it for a year and a half, daily, before I realized I couldn't function without it. Once my prescription run out, I had to wait for a few days to get a refill, and it was a nightmare. Only I was messed up enough by then to not even think that I can kick it. I decided it controls my life, I can't function without it, will never be happy again, and when I got my refill I decided to just take it all at once and die. So I did. Well, Pamela is right, it's hard to odee on it. I took 30 pills, .25mg each, and still woke up in the am. Weirdly enough I felt fine for the whole day. Only once night came and I lay down to go to sleep and closed my eyes did it hit me. First I started getting something like seizures in my eyelids, so couldn't keep my eyes closed. Every time I did it felt like I was walking along a razorblade and tiny electroshocks were going thru me, and I kept falling off into darkess. So I sat in bed, and it kept getting worse. I felt so cold, began shaking, started hallucinating and got super paranoid. I haven't gotten any sleep, of course, couldn't eat, and I'm small as it is, but in those first 24 hours I dropped about 15 lb. My eyes were bugging out of my head and I looked like a victim of strangulation. I knew I was really close to insanity, and just kept trying to write in my journal, to know I'm still who i am. At the time I had no money and no insurance, and was way paranoid besides, so emergency room was out of the question. There was no one around who cared to send me anyway.

A friend of mine kept ringing the doorbell until I opened the door. So he took one look at me, went to the store and brought all kinds of booze. Only after I drunk the amounts I couldn't get away with at any other time did I finally stopped shaking and was able to breathe and look around. So for the next 3 weeks it was all I did. Start drinking as soon as I woke up and pass out by 6 pm.

I did pull thru with no major consequences, but it took me 2 years after that to overcome the major depression and hypersensitivity that followed. The anxiety was trippled, but now there was nothing I could take for it.

Later I found out you are not even supposed to take it for more than 3 months... My doctor sucked, so make sure you find a good one, who actually listens to you and doesn't just write a script and ushers you out the door. Once mine just met me in a hallway even... I was really young, tho. Now a days I make sure to get my money's worth, lol.

Anyway, know thyself. Before taking stuff known to be addictive make sure you can handle it and are taking it for the right reasons. I started seeing xanax as an escape from feeling stuff I didn't want to feel way too fast. It made me feel invincible... I envy people who can just take in occasionally.

Depakote is a useful drug for bipolar disorder and migraine headaches. It has a braod range of side effects, but is generally a safe drug.

Excellent medicine for migraines, but when I prescribe for patients with severe migraines, there are 4 or 5 drugs that I prefer to use before Depakote. Topamax is my top choice for migraine prevention.

Remember, Xanax and all other benzos work by binding to GABA receptors in the brain, the very same GABA receptors that alcohol binds to. It is actually rather easy to overdose on benzos.... I'm always careful when writing for it. Someone mentioned Klonopin above...... that is a good choice for benzos. I like to write for the Klonopin wafers. They are dissolvable on the tongue and no water is needed. That way if someone is stuck with an anxiety attack and doesn't have liquid to take a pill, they can just pop a wafer quickly .

    Yeah, Xanax is great.
Untill you get addicted to them, eventually quit taking them, and then have violent seizures that you will have for the rest of your life.
Oh, and you will have no memory whatsoever.

I have a friend that had a huge xanax problem even earning him the nickname 'danny xanax' he ate handfuls like candy.
Once he was really high and there was a bowl of potpourri on the table in front of him, and he ate the whole thing thinking it was chips. That should give you an example of how out of it xanax can make you, lol.

Seriously, Please be careful with xanax. It is very, very easy to get addicted to them. And the side effects when you stop taking them are more than unpleasent.

Valium is in my opinion the best benzodiazepine. It is much less addictive than xanax and the side effects are so mild compared to some of the other benzo's out there.

Depakote is THE drug for bipolar disorder. It's the first line treatment.

I know of "3" people who died this passed year from oding off of Xanax. They are highly addictive and I personally hate Xanax. The withdrawels are awful. When I was prescribed Xanax for anxiety issues, I weined off because I was afarid of becoming dependant on them after noticing that I was reaching into the bottle every time I fealt the slightest bit of worry. While weining,I fealt as if my chest was caving in from a ton of bricks and I was only taking them for a week and a half!

Benzos are benzos are benzos. They basically all have the same side effects. The only main differences are some have quicker onset of action.... some last longer in the body...... some are stronger. Valium is one of the LONG acting benzos.

So what do you reccomend if Topamax and Depakote as well as a few other don't work?

My neighbor has severe migraines (meaning she's in pain for 29 of the 30 days of the month, and sleeping 20 of the 24 hrs in the day), and her Dr.'s (all 4 of them) have tried damn near everything in the book. She had one of them throw his hands up in frustration at her case.

She has also gained almost 150lbs since her car wreck (which started this whole mess), and has HBP and major depression.

Any ideas for pain management and an exercise routine that she won't black out from/or get her heart rate too high?

There are a lot of factors. I like to give all migraine patients Midrin for when they feel an aura of headache. There was recently a study from Turkey that showed IV Magnesium could be used successfully to stop migraines. There is new research that shows Botox is very effective. There are TONS of meds that work for migraines. It's just a matter of finding the right one. If the area of headache can be localized, it's also possible to do nerve blocks which give 3 to 6 weeks of relief.

A doctor prescribed Xanax to me in 2000 for anxiety. He kept on upping the dose and I kept shoving the pills down my throat. In about 6 weeks, I was addicted.

Xanax has great SHORT TERM uses, like, 2 weeks tops. Me? I was on it for 5 years. My parents stepped in and took it away. Anyway, I treated my pills the way Gollum treats his precious. I still have a bottle left, for safe keeping, just in case. I carry it around with me. Once, I misplaced it and had a panic attack.

I hate that Xanax was introduced to my life. I hate that I still think, "I can take just one. It won't hurt. I'll do better tomorrow." I hate that I have a limited supply and I am not getting any more.

I think the thing that everyone has to keep in mind when it comes to benzo's is that you need to be monitored when you are taking them by a dr. Do not just take them and then not go back to the dr's or take them from your friends prescription bottle. Xanax is not as great as the other benzo's because it is such short acting and is more addictive. Try looking into klonopin or requesting it from your doctor. I think adrenaline said that klonopin is better too, but I do not know anything about valium.

benzo's will help to deal with things but in the long term I think a good diet, exercise, and changing your behaviors to stress, etc... more natural methods will help to keep the anxiety, stress, depression from coming back or at least under control. It is hard believe me- I am headed down a long road to recovery.

I've been taking Xanax daily for almost 10 years now. Luckily, I haven't had any problems because of it and in fact has been the only thing that helped my anxiety so far.

Following a horrible long term violent situation, my already stress prone self went haywire and I developped general anxiety disorder along with a pretty intense depression. The depression was treated well and quickly with Paxil and the Xanax was dealing with my anxiety well. Back then, I was prescribed 2mg daily, .5mg/morning, .5mg/afternoon, 1mg/before bed. When the depression was dealt with, I was weaned off Paxil as it wasn't helping my anxiety much and prefered not having to deal with the side effects. I stayed with Xanax on 2mg or less for quite a while, contrary to others, my consumption of Xanax during the day decreased as I was getting better. After a year or so, my daily intake was between 1 and 1.5mg/day.

2-3 years ago, a new doctor thought it was time to take me off it and I did so for 7-8 months without any ill side effects aside from problems with my anxiety again and sleeping. I was given effexor as a new long term anxiety treatment and then suffered horrible side effects. Basically, went from being anxious to very very depressed and obsessively suicidal. After 3 months of this, I was smart enough (thankfully) to chuck the medication away instead of killing myself which was the only thing on my mind. A few days after stopping the effexor I started feeling better and like my old self again but still had problems with anxiety and sleeping.

My doctor put me back on Xanax at 1 to 1.5 mg/day and I've been doing well since. I've been seen by a psychiatrist and because I respond well to the Xanax and haven't abused it, I'm still on it for the time being.

I'm willing to switch to other meds if necessary but I do refuse any anti-depressants now for treatment of my anxiety. I'll be re-evaluated again in a couple months so we'll see if they will keep me on Xanax or try switching me to other meds.

I do appreciate the many contributions that others have offered in this thread, I have much research to do!

Xanax like many other drugs just aren't for everybody, for some they are hell and for others a godsend.

Xanax is very safe! But use as directed! As with asprin! However addiction/dependence is very high with any benzo. Asprin people just take for blood thinning headaches etc.

When it comes to ANY drug prescribed, talk to the pharmacy about taking it. Side effects your doctor may now know of are there. Doctors only prescribe, a pharmacy knows about the drug/s.

I can't take migraine meds. Because they contain various ingredients that make my heart rate go up too high.

So...Always use any drug with caution! Xanax is the number ONE prescribed med. STILL in the USA. It's much cheaper, it's (usually) with less side effects, and calming abilities take hold faster than the other Benzos.

They use it for seizures. I haven't ever seen anyone who was on it for mental health purposes that didn't appear to be in a zombie state.
