Default Other than loyalty, what gets you into the door of a salon?

So I'm working on my advertising for my esthetics business, and I need some help please!

I want to make up some coupons and specials.

What would you be impressed by in terms of a discount? what would make you pick one place over another? what would you pay full price for anyways?

I'm really counting on all your good ideas! Thanks!

the qualifications of the people there make me want to use the salon and I have never liked people who are too pushy about booking appointments. That turns me away.

There are a lot of 'discount' esthetics places...I think people are more impressed by results: ie, word of mouth, hot receptionist (sorry, true), trendy layout, trendy ad campaign in trendy papers...note the operative word!

People will pay extra if they're confident in the results they'll get.

I think slightly-higher-than-average prices with a discount coupon offered in an appropriate place(as part of an ad layout in a trendy mag...not in a local free daily, or as part of a valu-pak mailing) would be most effective.

I have ever been into a Salon twice in my life....last time MAJOR cut!

What attracted the certain salon to me after looking at many are: The way the ladies who do our hair have their hair cut, cleaned styled!!!! Really.

If they had nappy hair (alot of salons did) i kept looking around.

If the woman or man has great hair..I'll chose that person!

I think when a person does hair for a living they are a walking advertisment!!!!!

Nice people, I know you cant put that on a coupon but it helps.
I called 4 different stylists to redo my hair 2 didnt call me back and the other 2 were rude. Needless to say Ill never go to either of those places for anything ever. By the 5th one she was nice and receptive to me and Im seeing her on Tuesday...the others lost out on at least 300 or more.

Anyways, thats just one of my things that brings me in. If I go in a salon/spa its mainly not for the special but for the ambiance of the place. I like to be able to relax in it and feel like I dont have to think about anything.

Me, I'm a big mess. So the idea that someone will sort of look after me in a nice way (like, please don't judge my torn cuticles. I already know they are there). I think, too, that offering some small services very inexpensively (like an eyebrow wax) will get people in to meet you and see your facilities, and maybe come back for the brazilian?

Meea - are you open? Where are you? I'm dying to come and have you or one of your associates wax my eyebrows or something. I look like a yeti from the eyes up.

what kind of services will you offer? i'd mainly be interested in cleanliness, a professional demeanor, and, if you offer waxing, full body waxing being available, a private room for it, and maybe a discount for frequent clients.

I won't pay full price for acrylics. But I will pay full price for an extraction facial (and make regular appointments if they do a lot of extractions). A lot of salons forget to have comfortable chairs, but this won't necessarily make me not go to them.
I like doing walk in appointments, so a place that is willing to fit me in, or call me later to tell me if someone cancelled will get my appreciation.

Part of it depends on what market you're in. If you're in a higher-end major city market, focus more on the decor and ambiance and hiring the best aestheticians you can. Don't hire lazy people who cut corners. Most people will pay a bit more if they know they'll get consistent good service.

If you're in a smaller town, of course good service is still important (it always is) but the decor and advertising don't have to be quite as slick. In those markets, you want elegant but still accessible.

Whatever you do, DO NOT use those 80's Duran Duran Rio prints in your salon or ads. Way too many places still have the misguided notion that it gives their place cachet.

Grand opening specials help to get a place off the ground regardless of the market, though you might also want to send a press release to magazine like Allure (depending on where you are) since they have a Directory for services by major cities and smaller salons with good service are represented there as well.

If you're planning on running a higher-end place, it might be money well-spent to hire a publicist. There are smaller firms that can send out press releases for reasonable fees.

The nail salon down the street is awesome! They always do the "little" things that matter. Like on the off chance that my daughter goes with me, they give her a mini mani/pedi (whatever I'm getting) as well...no charge. Just treating customers like people, instead of just another dollar (*sigh...I know I know*).

Cleanliness really attracts me. And, dammit, if you are going to have those big vibrating/heated chairs for the pedis, make sure they work!! One place I went to had the chairs, but they were all broken in some way. I walked out.

Oh, and for nails...I hate going to a salon where they don't speak english. I went to the place with broken chairs (got a mani before the pedi that day) and they were all talking, they would look at us, look at each other and start laughing. WTF? No tips, refused to pay for bad service (and on top of the broken chairs) and walked out.

I look for a clean, friendly, place first. After that it's more about they way they do things, like how they treat custys, how they treat others employees, and how they are in general.

I would go the hole in the wall salon before the big box (lol) salon if the hole in the wall, was nice, and took the extra time to answer questions, treated me well, and just in general cared.

I do look at price too. I'll admit it. If I can pay $50 for a set of nails, a pedi and a good attidude, then I'll do it over the exact same thing for $65+. (That price difference will usually go to the stylist anyway, so the cheaper they are on flat rate, the more of a tip they get.)

Make the client feel most comfortable with you. Yes, everyone loves for you to do a fab job...but most clients love a stylist who they can socialize with while getting serviced.

Also, make sure you take the time to get to know your clients.
