    Default getting nails done?

I saw another thread about talons or something but if I put this here I thought I'd get a better response. I haven't had anything unnatural but polish on my nails for years. I used to get gel on them a long, long, long time ago. I've been kind of thinking about getting acrylics or gel nails because every time they grow to a nice length one will break and then I cut them all off. How long do they last each time you go and how much does it usually cost? I'm sick of having stumpy nails but I don't know if I want to start having to get them done regularly.

I think acrylic nails damage your real nail or at least the process that they go through to refill and file them does anyway. It did mine quite a bit. It cost me about 38 dollars for the set and 20 bucks every week and a half to refill (my nails grow fast). I thought spending 60 dollars per month for nails was a bit much. I just had them taken off and started using Revinail to get my real nails going again. I just keep them filed a nice length and paint them clear.

I pay $40 for full set and $20 every 10 or so days for a fill. I have short pink and whites.

I have the pink & whites, too and I love them. I actually have really nice natural nails but just like you, bunny, when they break I'd trim all them down. Plus I never worry about my polish chipping with the pink & whites.

The initial cost of having a full set down was about $40 and I get a rebase every two to three weeks for $20.

When I used to get acrylics I would pay about $45 the first time, and $25 to get them redone every week. I'm obsessive about my nails, so I got them done every week because I didn't like having any chips in the paint. If I didn't have time to go get them done, then I'd just paint a darker color over the french mani that I always got, but overall I went every week. They did kinda damage my real nails, but not too bad.

Price depends on where you live. When I lived in NYC, it was about $40 to put a set on, $20ish to get fills. Now I pay $25 for a full set, $12-$15 to fill them. It also depends on how long you get them. Some salons charge a few bucks extra for longer nails. I get mine filled every 2 weeks, and completely change out the nails (remove the old ones, let my real nails breathe for a week, then get a whole new set) every 4-6 months.

Gels way rock alot more. I could try to mess them up so bad and after being on stage scraping the stage I barely had a nick. I felt they looked better and lasted longer. It might cost a bit more but they look better longer.

I'd like to try gel nails but I'm not sure anybody in my area offers them. I definately do NOT want acrylic but I see acrylic referred to as gel also on the salon menu (acrylic gel.) How can I be sure I'm getting the real gel? What should I ask for?

according to my cosmetology book, ask if they gotta be cured by a UV light.

"UV gels must be buffed off layer by layer and will not soak off in acetone."

    No-light gels are basically wraps.

I love my gels! I have a ton 'o stuff to do throughout the day so having artificial nails (that hold onto the polish ) is a god-send...no more painting everyday! Yes, they will thin your natural nails, but mine are so dang dry, they break anyhow. If you can grow your own, and you have the time to reapply polish, then do so...if not, "I love my gels"

I have long pink and whites. I absolutely love them and when I get them replaced and my nail is naked, they are just as strong as they always were!

I pay $55 for a set and $35 for fills every 2 weeks. The sealer that is used on top keeps them so well that sometimes I can go even 3 weeks without any trouble.

I used to get my nails done religously, I guess it was gels as they had me sit with my nails under a UV light to finish them? My natural nails are weak and thin, so even though they grow superfast they will never be long, strong and pretty. I highly recommend them if you have thin nails or your nails break easily. It takes a bit of getting used to but after that it feels normal. I think they look gorgeous, especially if you're sitting with a gentleman, you reach for your glass and he sees those lovely feminine nails.

Your nails do not need to 'breathe'. Your nails are made of the same material (keratin) that makes up your hair. Your hair does not need to breathe either.
So you dont even have to have them removed or let them grow out periodically. If you got an infection or became sensitive to the chemicals used you would perhaps have to do that.

my real nails are usually pretty strong but I'll get them to a nice length and then it never fails, I'll break one. I don't want to have one short one and all the rest long so I cut them off. I might just try it out and see how I like fake ones. If they aren't too long I hope they don't bother when I type and stuff.

have you thought about silk-wrapped nails? i used to get those when i had my nails done, and they didn't damage my nails. there's no drilling with that evil-looking rotating buffer like the acrylic ones. a few dollars more, but they also lasted longer and didn't chip as easily as the acrylic. never tried the gels....and am curious to do so.

anyways....you can also ask them to trim them to a length that won't inhibit your ability to type and open soda cans and such

I found the opposite to be true with wraps, they just don't last on me. I do agree that they're a little more gentle on your natural nail. Unless there's damage to the matrix of the nail, any thinning from filing will grow out.

Rbcaul, your nails are placed under a UV light for a minute after the gel is applied, before it's buffed. Exposure to the light is the only way the gel will harden. If they put you under a light after buffing or polishing, you probaly got an acrylic set. Either way, as long as your happy with the results, that's all that matters!

I am wearing plain old glue-on's right now until I acheive a little more length, then I'll go back to acrylics.

Then I'll wear the acrylics (and tips) until my natural nail is long enough then I'll have the tips taken off, and just have an acrylic layer over my natural nail.

I always go french tips, on both my nails and my toes.

I do the silk wraps as well. I love them-they make it not only through my clumsiness, dancing and also dog grooming (which is brutal on the hands).

I haven't tried the gels, and although I'm curious, not about to take my wraps off and start over.

Wraps are a little more expensive and time consuming.. I get a french done on them each time and it's $32. I push it and go about every 3 weeks.
