Depends on your budget - for cheap back packer acom go to The Generator, it's cool there and fairly central. Much nicer than Picadilly backpackers which is very central and about the same rate!!!!! You can get a acom from about 70 pounds a week with basic breakfast.
I also stayed at the YHA in Kings Cross / St Pancras which was really nice, 25 pounds a night including full breakfast, 4 bed dorm.
I LOVE Camden markets for shopping - dunno what your into though, but you'll be sure to find plenty of things to do (-:
Picadilly Backpackers is a fucking hole! Unless you have a reason to be there (like you're working in SoHo), go outside of central London. I had my best times staying in a campsite in East London (Lee Valley cycle circuit...I think the campsite's closed now though).Depends on your budget - for cheap back packer acom go to The Generator, it's cool there and fairly central. Feature costumes for sale!

I'd echo Scarlett's sentiment - don't stay in central London unless you absolutely have to. Usually a room in the City will run you about £25-50/night more than an equivalent room, say, near Heathrow Airport.
Don't know what your budget is or how long you'll be staying, but chains such as Premier Travel Inn or Ibis Hotels are your typical budget hotels. These will probably run in the £60-75/night range, depending on where you are in London.
"Women, not girls, rule my world" - Prince
"No parking on the dance floor" - Midnight Star
If you like the opera, go and see The Phantom Of The Opera!! I was really amazed when I saw it much better than the film!! Shame John Owen Jones left
Ive been to london countless times + I also live in the UK (not the best part!).
Places to visit in London are....
Picadilly Circus,
London Zoo (in Camden)
Camden (shops!)
Harrods!!
Tower Of London (if you go there, take the tour round much interesting if you like history)
The London Dungeon (great fun!!)
Shakespeare Globe Theatre ++ also visit Stratford-Upon-Avon (I really love shakespeare's work!)
London Eye (amazing views you can see buckingham Palace)
Buckingham Palace
Hyde Park (nothing much there)
Go on a boat ride across the river Thames
Hounslow West (a very special place for me that) - doubt you'd want to go
West End (some great shows on)
When you walk around London and go on the tubes you dont realise that the places are so close together even though they feel longer to go on the tubes (must be me going crazy!).
Thats about it for now, but it all depends on what you like, what your interests are.
Hope's that helped for now, anything else you want to know dont hesitate to ask me.
