    Default Stupid Tourette's Syndrome disclaimers

I fucking hate it when people use the following excuses to give themselves Get Out of Jail Free Cards:

    1) "No offense, but insert offensive insult of choice here."

Yeesh, why can't people just not say offensive things rather than say something offensive and take away all the responsibility by feigning pacifism? Whenever someone does this, I retort, "Offense taken."

    2) "I'm the kind of person who speaks her mind." This is said after saying something pretty offensive.

Face it, the majority of people who explicitly state that they speak their minds in a defensive voice after saying mean things are excusing themselves from all blame. I know plenty of people who aren't afraid to speak their minds, but they don't use it as an excuse to say hurtful things (Mwah mwah, you wonderful ladies on SW).

I have named such disclaimers the Tourette's Syndrome disclaimers. Yes, I know that Tourette's Syndrome is a very real and very serious mental disorder, but I call them such because by using them, people are basically saying that they can shoot off their mouths without consequences by excusing themselves.

Can anyone else add any more Tourette's disclaimers?

    Oh come now.

Whats the big deal? And don't tell me, face to face, you've never done it.

The problem is the lack of reasonable discourse on the subject.

Its not a 'Get out of Jail Free' card, its an 'I have an opposing point of view and don't want you dropping to personal insults because I have an opinion.'

I use it often, I use both often. The lack of their presence is normally devistating to those who can't take opposing points of view.

"Bless her heart" is my favorite Southern one. You can say the most horrible things about someone, as long as you bless her heart immediately beforehand or afterward.

    Examples:
She's a sweet girl, bless her heart, but that face of hers could stop traffic.
Poor old Jimmy sure is stupid, bless his heart.
Bless her heart, that girl will go home from the bar with anything in pants.

    Mastri:
Yes, I agree that it can be used to add extra emphasis that you meant no harm, but some people will say stuff like, "No offense, but that's a really stupid idea and you're going to fail." One girl once said, "No offense, but I don't like you gooks because you're stealing all the jobs."

Also, if one is so confident that s/he is so entitles to his/her opinions, why worry about what other think? If they don't like it, they don't like it. If you want to say it, go ahead, but just keep your mouth shut if you're just arguing to be perverse.

Yekhefah, that's great! I never thought of that.

I was setting up an Movie theatre system on a boat in miami once...
The purchaser was unable to be there except for the last day.
During the process his wife and son tried making multiple changes to the setup to change the way the audio sounded, in their opinion it was better. Well anger ensued and before long we were all meeting witht he owner, who asked my opinion on the audio. I used the 'No Offense' a LOT there. Yea it was my OPINION that it sounded better, but, well.... She signs the paychecks... I can eat humble pie for that.

    Mast!

I usually say "Im the sort of person who speaks her mind" before or during the verbal assult as a sort of warning of what comes next! (-:

How about "I was drunk" had a boyfriend once who used to belive that he didn't have to appologise to anyone for anything he did whilst drunk - that pissed me off!

    It's all about context.

Using an excuse for a racial epithet doesn't fly, however, in my book at least, something along the lines of "No offense, but your breath is kinda stinky" or "Your boyfriend is treating you like shit. Sorry, I speak my mind."

That seems to make more sense to me.
"She has written so well, and marvellously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer...But this girl, who is to my knowledge very unpleasant and we might even say a high-grade bitch, can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves as writers"

Ernest Hemingway on writer, aviation pioneer and horse trainer Beryl Markham
