    Default My diet dillemma

Ok, this board seems like an oracle to healthy eating. Basically, I am sick of being sick all the time. I still want to lose a bit of weight and tone up (maybe ten pounds), though weight loss hasn't really been hard for me.

My problem is that everything makes my guts turn, and the doctor hasn't given me very solid advice. I have IBS, and from experience I cannot eat any dairy (none whatsoever, including yogurt...it just kills me), nothing high fat (this is sketchy, but it seems like anything fried or 'fatty' like mayo does me in), and not too much insoluble fibre that is not mediated by soluble fibre (I can't eat wholegrains or fruit/veggies on an empty stomach...it makes me bloat and also grates my guts apart...so generally I eat vegetables with a fresh bun, white bread because brown I can't handle). Also, no caffeine (not even green tea), and very limited alcohol. Even ice water and things like spicy food, garlic, onions...all pain. Haha, I actually request room temperature water sometimes at restaurants.

This is limiting. Basically I'm confined to lean meats (I like fish), and lots of white carbs with limited fruits and veggies. To complicate, I also have chronic iron/b12 anemia, which I try to battle with pills and the occasional b12 shot, but the pills are stomach pain as well. Any meal suggestions? I am so tired all the time and my metabolism is grinding to a halt because I just can't think of what to eat, and when I need to be in class or at work, I often eat nothing at all in fear of getting sick. ALSO (were it not enough), I have PCOS and this contributes to insulin resistance and obesity in women, which I have thus far avoided, but have been told to limit my carbs because of the hormonal mess.

so what the hell should I eat? I have run out of ideas and food is so damn frustrating. I want to be healthy, and I know i need to speed up my metabolism by eating more consistently. Any suggestions?

Your symptoms sound like classic celiac disease. You can read more here . If you are intolerant of dairy, you should check all foods you are eating for dairy. Lots of processed foods use whey or casein or other dairy derived ingredients. Going gluten and dairy free is worth a try even if you are unsure it is what is going on for you. I hope your digestion gets better soon.

Are you sure you can't eat ANY dairy?....Cheese is fermented dairy product, so some lactose intolerant people can eat it....Goat milk is also good for people with dietary issues since the milk proteins are smaller than cow's milk......

How about some Middle Eastern diet staples, like dates, figs, hummus, & they make cakes out of oranges & almond paste, so no flour or dairy....

If she is intolerant of casein (the protein in milk) then all dairy will be out for her.

Are you by any chance blood Type A?

I am and I read this book called Eat Right 4 Your Type and it's also known as the blood type diet. It's not really a diet in the idea you will lose weight, but a diet in how to eat healthier. Blood Type A is supposed to flourish on an asian-type diet (very little meat, with protein coming mainly from soy and certain fish, whole grains and green vegetables)....bad foods are foods like beef, pork, dairy, tropical fruits and vegetables. They are supposed to cause health problems in Type A.

    Worth considering....

Hmm that's cool Emily, but I am Type A+, and I couldn't survive w/o some of those things, lol.

I want veggies like kiddos want candy.

hon, maybe you should see a specialist instead of a general practitioner, and a registered dietician. in your case, your insurance plan probably covers it.

My roommate in college had IBS, and rice/brown rice were her staples. Eating all white rice would upset her GI because it didn't have any fiber, but all brown could be bad too. You can do quite a lot with rice if you've got a good collection of spices and sauces. If you buy sticky rice, you can also make rice balls (with or without a nori seaweed wrapping), which are easy to eat and transport well. Rice + veggies = good light but nutritious meal with some fiber to help everything go well.

Nuts can be good -- plenty of calories, but not too much for your tummy if you eat only a bit at a time (or only go nuts with lower-fat ones like sunflower seeds).

I'd look into what other posters have said about milk/wheat sensitivities. It kind of sucks to read the labels and realize that everything has something in it that you shouldn't eat, but if it can help you figure out what is or isn't causing all the pain, it should be worth it. Maybe you could try eliminating all milk and milk products first (my roomie got cramps from the bread at the cafeteria, which she discovered after a few weeks was made with a teensy bit of milk). If that doesn't help, then don't worry about trace amounts of milk and see if you can eliminate gluten-containing foods (anything with wheat, oats, barley, rye, and other similar grains like spelt); rice, corn, and potatoes are fine.

In general, the more processed foods are, the more likely they were to upset my friend's gut; that seems to be a rule with me as well, though to a lesser degree.

    Best of luck!

I agree witht he Celiac. My mother and brother both have Celiac's...my mom suffered 40 years of severe allergies, had to avoid all of the foods you mentioned, and was always sick until her doctors figured it out at 49. See someone who knows about the disease...it can seriously improve the quality of your life, and is diagnosed with a simple blood test.

Wow. I just read the Celiac symptoms on a website, and it's uncanny...the anemia, the bloating, the fact that I don't get my period, the 'enormous appetite', all very uncanny. It even said that many celiac people get mistakenly misdiagnosed with IBS. Spooky.

Thank you ladies. To a doctor I go (thank you free health care in Canada, but the waiting time for a specialist is months and months).

The Gluten Free Pantry (separate the wheat from the chef!) is a great resource for mixes and whatnot (making GF breads/etc from scratch is a pain in the butt), and the Gluten Free Gourmet books have some terrific recipes.

If that's what it turns out that you have, they're great helps. In the meantime, cut out all gluten and see what happens, since that's what you think you have. This means wheat, oat, barley, rye, spelt. . . If you've got a big grocery store or health food store nearby, you should be able to pick up some GF cookies (Pamela's makes some good ones) for when you have cravings for sweet crunchy carbs. Read all the labels on things that aren't labelled Gluten-Free; even "Modified Food Starch" may be wheat starch and can get you if your gut is still in turmoil.
And don't try to sneak any wheat, your body will still freak out (I'm serious, there are some people that "sneak" croissants and biscuits, which are difficult-to-impossible to recreate GF; like their body wouldn't figure it out??)

How do I know so much?
My mom got diagnosed as celiac when I was 13. I've been her deputy food police ever since, and so I've picked up a lot of stuff along the way. If you are diagnosed as being celiac, feel free to PM me or email me; I'd be happy to help if I can. It's very liveable if you can get it figured out (and therefore get it under control).
