    Default Wireless Internet HELP!!!!

I'm pissed. I'm moving to my first apartment all by myself next week and I was super-excited until I called to start the utilities and found that not only do they not have digital cable in my area, but there is no DSL/Wireless Internet either! That presents a HUGE problem for me since I like to watch music videos and surf the net in my spare time. So... I was wondering... a while back I met somebody who said they had a chip in their cell phone that gave them internet access permanently, anywhere... does anybody know what that is and how I can find it? I'm almost considering not moving to this particular place because of this.

I've mentioned it before. I use a usb cable to go from my phone to my laptop. Their is no special chip, but you have to pay for the service, I pay for 'Tmobile interenet' for $20 a month in addition to my normal charges.

You can connect to the new using a satellite link. You download by satellite and upload comands, data etc by dialup. I believe the standard home satellite services Dish and DirectTV still have those. Just a suggestion to look; I'm out of date of that. Also isn't Verizon installing wide area access points you could look into.

Anyhow, that's one thing people need to look into when they are relocating, just like city water, sewer, gas etc.

DSL is very sparse unless you are on an urban or well-populated suburban area; probably always will be. And yes, specific TV services is completely independent of internet (or voice) over cable, as CO says below.

I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Just because a provider has no digital cable, that doesn't mean they don't have cable internet service. Ask them.

Moreover, trying to use your cell phone for high speed internet is only good if you're in an area covered by that service. Verizon has the widest coverage right now, but you'd have to check online to see if it's in your area.

My condolences on your arrival in my own private hell.

You have any idea how close your wireless router is?

I also have cable internet and my laptop is wireless. It's an 802.11g and doesn't go to the next house...I've tested it. Two neighbors over, however, is a wireless router that does reach my house. They make boosters that allow you to go further, if you have a 3-4 story house, or a lot of brick walls.

So do I lol. Luke just got everything et up and working today, so I'm in the living room right now, and he's in the office both on line. This so rocks!!!!

You can get cable internet, and go to Wal-Mart and get a Linksys wireless router for about $50. The it's all plug and play, and you'll have wireless then.

The company that offers DSL almost always does not offer cable internet because DSL is a telephone company product, not a cable TV product. Some cable TV companies do not offer any cable internet at all, but not many of those arohd, except the older independent companies. Your local cable company could have internet access only in certain areas and you are not in one of them.

Those are your situations. I already mentioned satewllie internet access and the new wide area network wireless as possibilities. If you have to go dial-up, get the accelerated, or Propel-enhanced, service for $5 more per month

It is VERY easy to set up your own DSL. Don't worry about that. In the kit, you'll have these "filters" that you put in every one of your phone outlets. Make sure you put them on every single one that you use. Then you'll install the software included.. Then, you'll hook up all the stuff, and you'll be online within 10-15 minutes. It's very very easy.

The software they give you will also have a tutorial on it. The installation is self-explanatory, but if you get stuck.. You can use the tutorial.

Is your DSL going to be wireless? Ours is. We have BellSouth though. In RI, we had Verizon DSL, and they weren't wireless. That could've changed though.

Yes. Well I ordered the special modem that allows up to 4 computer hookups AND serves as a wireless router. Not too sure what that means, but I have an inkling that that means it is. I hope so. I just bought my new laptop with wireless capability 2 months ago and I'd hate to not be able to cart it around my new place due to cables!

Very cool.. They have the same deal that we do then. When you get the kit, if you need any help, I'm here. But like I said, it's incredibly easy.

It's in my 2nd bedroom. My wife and I went to St. Louis new years eve and got lost, she took the laptop and turned it on and it picked up someones wireless router. We found out where we were and how to get where we wanted to go. It was kinda cool but I have no idea if anyone knew we were useing there service.

Your equipment seems to be wireless router with 4 ports that also serves as a DSL modem. Meaning you can have up to 4 wireless conections, but see if you can use hardwired cable connections too. Mfgrs are always finding ways of cost reductions at the penalty of specialization; my system uses separate devices for the modem and the router, which I agree is a bit wasteful but it has not failed me yet.

You found an unprotected wireless "hot spot." Most people use the router right out of the box without even renaming the default network or adding passwords. If they have any file-sharing turned on, they are going to get hacked.

One story I read recently in maybe CNet is that one person in an apt couldnt get his new wireless router set up because he was actually using one of the 5 neighbors' routers set up exactly with the out-of-the box defaults. I guess everyone went to the same Best Buy sale that month. It's like hanging you car keys on a nail right outside your door. You would think that at least some means of range-limitation should be built-in especially for those living in complexes.
