Post Skipping a period - is it safe?

I was thinking about skipping my sugar pills this month because I dont want my period this month. I was wondering if skipping the pills will work? I've never tried to skip a period before. I'm on Orthocyclen if that makes a difference. If anyone has tried this befoer let me know please.
    thanks

i've done it...it won't put you in any danger but you might spot during the month or have a longer period next month..so it may not be worth it to you. when i did it my next period was like 12 days long.

Just make sure you start a new pack when you should be starting your sugar pills, otherwise you'll get your period anyway.

I tried that trick, but it made me bleed all month long rather than once a month. I still do it once in awhile if an anniversary is coming up, but pay for it later by spotting all month. If you're going to skip periods, then at least let yourself bleed a few times a year to get it all out.

the trick is to use the pills that have no variation in the dosage of hormones. IE the same dosage all 28 days. Mircette is what I take.

Then I simply skip the sugar pills and go onto the next pack.

I can do this for 3 months then take a week break to have my period. My periods are typically 5 - 7 days. first 3 days are a typical period without bc and the rest is very light . I've never noticed them being worse, longer .

I use to also use the patch and skip the week it's to be off. Basically works the same. HOWEVER I noticed I was prone to a ton of infections when I was on the patch. I've not had an issue since switching to the pill.

Seasonal works the same but mircette is cheaper and is the SAME deal except that you have the placebo pills in the packet, just skip and go onto the next month and you've saved your self quite a bit of money.

Doing it with Ortho Tri cyclen or any other pill that the dosage varies as the month goes on , typically dont work to well, if at all.

But just as was mentioned above , still if your body wants to start...spot or bleed there is very little you can do about it.

i've done it for years (not gone for years without a period- skipped every other or so for years). every gyno i've talked to said it was fine, and perfectly healthy. just make sure you do bleed every 3 months, at least. tart is exactly right about constant dose pills though- you said you're on ortho tri-cyclin? you might not be able to skip successfully.

i've never had spotting or an extra heavy period after skipping. in fact, my periods seem to be lighter and less painful if i skip every other one, which is one of the reasons i do it.

FYI.... I think doing this can increase your risk of uterian cancer. Only because if you skip your period, you don't shed the lining of your uterus and the lining can build up and cause some weird cell stuff. Not that I don't skip my own period from time-to-time but I would NEVER do this more than one month at a time.

the lining doesn't build up constantly. it is reabsorbed into the body as it grows. otherwise, your uterus would explode! j/k. but you'd start to get a seriously distended abdomen and think you were pregnant.

It is fine to use your B/C pills to skip a period. Actually it depends on how long you've been on them too tho. If you haven't been on them for a year, I wouldn't recommend it. If you do, use a backup for the 1st 2 weeks of your new pack. Sometimes when your body isn't used to the hormones and you do try to skip a period it backfires because you confuse your body. Just be sure to have a few periods a year if you are going to try this regularly.

I've done it twice. Both times, before I finally did get my period the second month, I got so bloated I looked eight weeks pregnant. I got agonizingly painful cramps and an endless, heavy period. Some women do it fine, but I'll never do it again. It was miserable.

The way that hormonal BC works is that it tricks your body into thinking it's already pregnant. So instead of your uterus building up a huge nutritious lining for an egg to implant into, it just builds a little bit onto what's already there (which would already be very rich if you were actually pregnant). The analogy I've heard is that it's like tricking a bird into thinking it's almost done with a nest when it's actually just started -- instead of a sturdy thick nest lined with lots of feathers, it would just build a spindly contraption of a few sticks and twigs with some fluff here and there.

Since your body thinks it's pregnanant, there's no "need" to shed the lining and start the ramp-up for the next egg; the big reason that the pills have you do that is so that it feels and seems more "natural" and therefore acceptable to most people. Seasonale has you have your period four times a year partially for the same reason and partially so you get confirmation that you aren't pregnant.

With Depo, many people don't get their periods at all. I can't see much reason why you couldn't do the same with the pill or really stretch it out to 9 months between periods other than the lack of confirmation of non-pregnancy. In any case, I wouldn't recommend skipping the placebo dose with variable-dose hormones* (for all the reasons above), and if you do skip the placebo dose, you may wish to take a pregnancy test around when you'd normally be bleeding to be certain nothing's gone wrong during that first month.
*With the Ring, you need to stack rings for that fourth week to have enough hormones in your body to stave off bleeding. Make sure you have some way of telling which ring is the old one and which ring is the new one so you don't take the new one out and suddenly have very low circulating hormones.

Also, be warned that insurance companies will only pay for so many rounds of birth control per calendar year, so you can usually only skip one or two periods a year before you have to start buying pill packs on your own and at cost.

It's not good for you at all, but I have to be honest and say I do it too. So far I can't say I have noticed any problems, but I know long term it is just not a wise thing to do. A few times probably wont hurt too much, but I guess it also depends on your personal views of whats healthy and what isn't. Some women seem to be able to skip periods without consequensies too whilst others will experience spotting or heavier more uncomfortable periods after they've skipped.

If you are just doing it occasionally I don't think you will have any problems. When I was on B/C I did it mainly because I had such a light period every month that I just figured if I on'y bleed normally once every three months than that was just fine. (Yeah, I know, kind of stupid rationalizing.) It worked fine for me because I was not on a tri-phasal pill. My sister tried it when she was on ortho tri and it made her spot. I guess you just have to be very aware of your hormones, like when ovulation is coming, and things like that before you do it, so you are aware of something doesn't seem right; like Yekhfeh said, she got all bloated & spotted, or some women will get yeast infections, or get a cold every time they do this, then you know it doesn't work for your body. As long as you are aware of how your body is reacting to it, I say try it at least.

~Sorry if the post doesn't exactly make a lot of sense I am pretty trashed right now.

    *Bump*

My birthday is next week and I wanna get laid. I just checked my pills and if I go as planned I would be right smack in the middle of aunt flow at the time.

So, the plan is to buy a new pack of pills and skip the placebos. From this thread I can gather that it works and is relatively safe.

I have a few other questions tho and thought its easier to bump this than start a new thread...

To anyone who has tried this..
Did it make you hormonal and psycho?
Did it make you break out?
And can we please get a verdict on if it will make me a bloated cow or not?

    Thanks!

Nope just started a new pack. Yet, I'm not really hormonal.

Did it make you break out?
Not at all. I also hardly ever break out (don't hate me eep!)

And can we please get a verdict on if it will make me a bloated cow or not?
Probably not. Do you always get PMS symptoms before the sugar pills? If you do the next pack should keep the bloating down or gone.

No, no, and no. I'm on Yasmin and fuck around with getting my period all the time (birthdays, anniversaries, vacations, party nights, etc) and never have any problems. No spotting, no bloating, no moodiness. My next period will seem a bit heavier than normal, but it's still pretty light like always. I love modern medicine!!

What kind of birth control are you on?

I *think* I was on orthotricyclen, a generic form of it, for 3 years and I'd do it a few times a year. I think once I did it 2 months in a row. I never had any "overcompensation" of blood the next month or bled more days than usual or anything like girls have mentioned above.

I do this all year long. I get my period MAYBE 3 times a year. My Dr. said there is no health reason for women to EVER get their periods and it is perfectly safe to do it all year long and never get yours. (I get it because my body tends to cramp on its own after a few months so I just let it come) It's never made me break out OR get hormonal(think about it...you get like this when your hormones DROP and you get your period...if yuour hormones never drop, you wont get this way)

I do it 1) for convenience and 2) because I have bad fibroids so my Dr. said the less I can get mine the better off I'll be because the hormones in the pills help shrink them and keep them from getting larger, so the more I can be on hormones during the year the better.

WTF?????? I cannot believe a doctor would give this advice. Well yes I can, this is America. Cameron, I'm sure you already know the reasons why we get our periods and should. Skipping is bad, but not going to kill you, but skipping THAT much and having a doctore CONDONE this? There's no health reason to get our period? Is she god?

I would be flat out floored and never see her again just for saying this, even if I still chose to skip all the time.

I've had almost every gyno I've ever seen tell me the same thing actually...she's not alone. Far from it. It actually IS very safe. A womans period is kind of a last vestigal remain that we have evolved to not really need but still have and deal with anyway. It has a BIT of use...but not enough that we cant live perfectly healthy lives without it(kind of like tonsils or the appendix)
Periods are mostly for pregnancy issues...so you know whether you are or arent and you can tell if there are problems with your fertility.
And if you are on contraception....what you are experiencing is withdrawl bleeding..not a "real" period anyway.
