Default Woohoo! finally got my ass to the gym

So, I finally got my ass to the gym; I've been feeling a bit negative about parts of my life (but there's been some good parts too), and part of that was feeling like I'd gained weight. Finally too myself to the gym, weighed myself (155.4, when I was expecting over 160), and exercised my butt off.

2hrs and 40min on the elliptical, going 8.97 miles, burning 1680 calories.

How accurate are those calorie counters anyways? I always do about 600 cal an hour on the elliptical so it didn't seem too off.
AND I have my CLA tonalin (walmart brand) which I'll start tomorrow because I don't want to deal with those possible squirty side effects

Congratulations! it's great for blasting out the blahs.

Remember to go at a manageable pace for your come-back -- or you'll find yourself too sore to move tomorrow!

I was wonderingabout the accuracy of the calory counters myself. I do 30minutes on the eliptical and go a little over 3 miles and burn about 300 or so calories. I decided to try a bike the other day and in 30 minutes I'd gone 8 miles but only burned about 145 calories. I know they're different machines but that just doesn't seem right.

fancygirl: 2 hours & 40 minutes on the elliptical? Holey moley, have some Advil tommorrow!

I always follow the heart-rate rule to time workouts, not the calorie counter...but everyone is different.....

me too on the heart rate...try to stay around 150 and keep it for 50 minutes, then a 10 min cool down.

stay motivated! If you are losing it, come here and we can help, or hire a trainer. Mine keeps my butt in line.

Congratulations, getting to the gym is the hardest part, at least for me. Once I'm there, I always want to work out at least for a little bit.

Two hours and 40 minutes on the elliptical machine? Holy shit! Be careful that you don't over-exert yourself! 45 minutes of cardio is plenty!

    Yeah, me too...

Calorie counters on exercise machines are notoriously inaccurate, so forget about that reading and as Emily and MM said, focus on the heart rate reading of the machine. That's a far more accurate indicator of your performance for that session.

2hrs and 40min on the elliptical, going 8.97 miles, burning 1680 calories.
You're not doing anything for yourself past the first hour of exercise--you're only cannibalizing your own muscle proteins. Moreover, you want your exercise regimen to be practical in the context of your overall lifestyle--you want to be able to fit the gym into your life 3-5 times a week, every week, every month, all year long. Almost three hours at a stretch is not at all practical or necessary.

OMG! I can BARELY to stand to do that for more than 20 minutes! haha..I think that's boredom though, I have ADD, so I get bored REALLY easy. The only way I can even get through the 20 minutes is listening to super heavy music or watching the tv!

I have to agree though Cas. Obs. You don't want to do that much. Plus, you will definatly get burned out quick!

Is that so? Or are there different strokes for different folks? I used to do about an hour of cardio and then lift some light weights/do crunches/etc... but then I stopped and started doing strictly cardio-- like 2-3 hours a day and my body improved dramatically. I mean like crazy. But as far as being able to do that consistently, it only lasted for about 2 months, until holidays came around lol. It was a big part of my schedule though. I used to joke around and say the gym was my "part time job"... I made way more money at work looking like that so I guess it really was! Go figure.

Yeah, I was in the best shape I think while wrestling. I'd go to the gym in the morning, do an hour of cardio, and then train with the school team for two and a half hours of cardio and weights in the evening. It was INTENSE. But I felt like wonderwoman...and the football guys would come into the gym and drool at us wrestling girls, writhing our lithe bodies around one another, wearing short shorts and sports bras. Haha, if they only saw some of us in the hotel rooms at provincials (xxx!).

If I ever had the stamina to do that again, I would. But it really is a full time job.

From a guide on endurance (i.e., extended exertion) sports:

    Gluconeogenesis

Research has shown [Lemon, PWR “Protein and Exercise Update” 1987, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise. 1987;19 (Suppl): S 179-S 190.] that exercise burns 10-15% of the total amount of calories from protein by extracting particular amino acids from muscle tissues. If the endurance athlete does not provide this protein as part of the fuel mixture, more lean muscle tissue will be sacrificed through gluconeogenesis to provide fuel and preserve biochemical balance. In simple terms, you need to provide protein from a dietary source or your body will steal it from your muscle tissue. The longer you exercise, the more muscle tissue is sacrificed and the more your performance, recovery, and immune system are compromised. During exercise, the wise endurance athlete will make sure that complex carbohydrate and protein intake are both adequate to delay and offset this cannibalization process.

I'm already upping my proteins anyways because of the CLA tonalin. But, my exercise regimen works for me. I only exercise hard core about three times a year. I just simply find going x amount of times a week for the rest of my life monotonous. I haven't danced in a couple months because I haven't felt like it, so when I do go back--I'm sure that will provide the three times per week rule.
But I can stay on the elliptical for hours (plus it helps that there's a TV that I can watch movies and shows on.) I've done this before and it helps drop the fat (and I'm pretty sure it was fat because muscles don't pretend to be love handles sticking out of my jeans.)
And today, I'm really not THAT sore, or at least as much as I thought I'd be. A little bit towards my outer thighs, and the inside part of my thigh next to my knee, and a little tightness in my calves.
Plus, my diet (except for the protein meals to take the CLA pills) isn't going dramatically down in calories. I'll probably be in the 1200-1800 range per day, and my workouts will probably range from 600-1800; I'm also not exactly worried because this is only for a short term, and I don't hate my body so I'm not going to risk bad hair, bad skin, et al. just to drop some pounds.

I am curious about this "following the heart rate rule." What's that?

^CO is correct about long-duration exercise cannibalizing muscle tissue- the primitive brain is built to switch off certain modes to ensure surivival (the simple assumption is that you are in distress while working out & need to retain some fat, so it quits burning fat & switches to muscle, kinda like a hybrid car engine.....). I like believing this because I'm so ADD, I only do each station in the gym for 20 minutes. Heh.

Heart rate: the simple math is to keep your heart rate during workouts above 120 beats per second for 30-40 minutes a week, to start. As you get more fit, you can have your heart beat faster for longer. Ramp up to it.

do yourself a favor and buy a heartrate monitor. Even the lower end versions by Polar have a built in calorie monitor that takes into account your gender, weight, age, and intensity level. You will be shocked by how inaccurate the calorie monitors on cardio equipment are - especially the eliptical trainers - these are usually the worse... which is why people flock to them. An article I read a while back in consumer reports discussed how the overestimation of calories burned by monitors on cardio equipment is usually somewhere around 20-45%. For example, a good, solid hour of cardio at about 75% of my max heart rate will burn about 500 calories for me (at 5'4", 120 lbs)- however, that damned eliptical will report 800-900 calories!

    the tease.
Keep up the good work though, and focus on your heartrate.

No, even though I haven't worked out in a few months, I think my body just knows that one to two hours (sometimes more) of straight elliptical (well I take stretch breaks every hour) is okay. I can do it for that long because there's low impact, an easy rhythm, and with a TV, I'm golden
But put me on a treadmill, bike, or stairstepper and I can only handle twenty minutes too.
    P.S.
Ah, there were two CLA tonalin threads here not too long ago. I got sixty of the Walmart pills (smell like chocoloate but seriously the biggest pills I've ever taken in my LIFE) for 12.00.
And I have to make a food recommendation: I love my lean cuisine entrees. They've come out with some great foods that help me reset my portion monitoring, and taste good (to me, but there's a ton of different types; my favorite is the pesto sauce over salmon and orzo pasta. mmmm!)
But I saw at walmart last night that Lean Cuisine had come out with Panini's in different flavors like chicken club, southwest, and mushroom/steak and cheddar. I just tried my first one, and it tastes pretty damned good. the club panini was 320 calories (90 from fat), 9g fat, 4g sat fat, poly and mono fat-- 1g each, cholesterol 35mg, sodium 880 mg(kind of bad, I know), Potassium 130mg, carbs 34g, diet fiber 3 g, sugars 3g, and protein 24g.
