    Default Would This Work?

Okay, this might sound a bit weird at first... It's just a thought I guess:

I was doing this bondage photoshoot earlier this week and one of the scenes called for me getting wrapped in saran wrap and then a blanket... I (obviously) sweated a ton. But, I was thinking... don't they do spa treatments like that for women to lose weight (yea, it's obviously water weight). BUT, they're sweating out toxins, right? So, I'm wondering if there's more to those treatments or if I could have my guy wrap me in saran wrap and make it a DIY? Just wanted to throw the idea out there and see what y'all have to say...

It works, but temporarily. What you lose in "weight" is just water. But, it's a great way to "detoxify" your body or cleanse the pores.

I'd paint on a mud treatment before the wrapping, at least on your chest and back. Borgese and Nars make really nice ones. You could even apply body "firming" creams to your thighs and butt, too. They really help firm, but they do give an instant smooth look and feel really nice on the skin.

I'm interested, but how do you keep your skin form getting red and itchy or breaking out cause of the plastic?

While you'll lose water weight from the sweat, there are no "toxis" that you are releasing. The whole "toxins" concept has no merrit behind it even though the word is often a favorite buzz word among the undeducated. For example, have you ever gone for a massage and had the massage therapist tell you to drink lots of water because it will help you cleanse your system of toxins? That's 100% nonsense junk science. While drinking more water is always a good idea anyway, there are no "toxins" in your system that a massage or water will cleanse. Still though, they teach this in massage school anyway even though they know the claim has no scientific merrit at all. If you want to have some fun with your massage therapist who claims this, ask him or her specifically what toxins are there in your body that the massage and water will cleanse out of your system. Have them name them. Chances are, they'll just sit there with a dumb look on their face without an answer.

Careful with that kind of wrap....i CAN'T do it because it makes you hot and will raise your BP and heart rate! Not good for me, or anyone with a condition of the heart or breathing!

Actually when I went to massage therapy school (interesting experience to say the least) we were receiving/giving massages 4 days a week. The reason water was suggested was not to release toxins necessarily, but because just like when you work out, massage causes small muscle tears and lactic acid can build up in the muscle. Basically, you can end up being more sore (especially with deep tissue massage) after the massage then before. Water helps keep lactic acid from building up. So, it really is a good idea to drink more water when you get a massage. JMO though...

I think if you want to sweat, you're better off going to a dry sauna. If you want to do it at home, just buy one of those portable sauna thingys.

^ I thought deep tissue massage was to release built-up lactic acid in the tissues....when I run a lot & work out, I can pinch-n-roll my limbs and feel something breaking up.

OH fun "toxins" info- I think the body expells unwanted substances pretty fast. When a person drinks cheap booze & gets a bad hangover, part of it is your body's haste to expel the impurities in the cheap liquor.

there's also something called "uric acid" that collects at the bottom of your feet and in the hands. you can feel it by pressing and moving your nail on the soft part of your palm/sole. It feels like crystals inside. this uric acid can be broken down through massage

You could experience kidney failure by doing saran wraps. Leave it to the pros...

I have a detox book that suggests you wrap yourself in a white sheet, then saran wrap, and sweat it out for a few hours. Apparently the sheet will be all brown from toxins when you're done. I'd actually love to hear if this works!

This is from the American Massage Therapy Association's Site:

"Massage acts to disperse the accumulated by-products of muscle action that irritate muscles and nerve endings. Lactic and carbonic acids build up in muscle tissue shortly after exercise begins. These acids are waste products that contribute to causation of the pain and occasional cramping that exercisers, athletes, dancers, etc. suffer during and/or after workouts or performing. These acids are formed when the glycogen stored in the liver and muscles is burned to produce the energy expended during exercise. The acids must eventually be reconverted to glycogen and stored again, or drained out via the lymph and circulatory systems. Pain and fatigue persists until this process of reconverting or excreting is completed."

I do not pretend to be an expert on the topic, but I believe, based on this information, that there is some "merrit" or merit, even, to the idea that "toxins" (call them acids or waste products or what you will) are eliminated with the aid of water.

After the "toxins" (called here lactic and carbonic acids) are worked out of the muscles through massage they may enter the circulatory system, be passed through the kidneys and the bladder and be eliminated with urine. I would think that drinking a lot of water would aid this process greatly, as the kidneys, along with liver, are responsible for most waste removal in the body.

As the elimination of some bodily wastes is handled by the endocrine sytem, which includes, ultimately, sweat glands, I would think that the saran wrap deal would work to a lesser extent.

    While I'm at it:

toxin: A poisonous substance, especially a protein, that is produced by living cells or organisms and is capable of causing disease when introduced into the body tissues but is often also capable of inducing neutralizing antibodies or antitoxins.

This definition would apply directly to carbonic and lactic acids.

So why do some rehab places give massage to people who are detoxing?
