    Sad New and worried

I'm new to dancing (started about mid-october), I am a college student and athlete and I decided to dance to make money to have for things I might need, emergencies etc. (I don't need to pay any bills or anything like that). I work no more than two nights a week and often not consecutive weeks, I worked a few nights in Oct, about 6 nights in Nov and two nights in Dec, I haven't been since. I was never a crazy hustler, I just wanted some money so I on average I would say I definitely make a lot less a night than most dancers.

Going into dancing I knew nothing about taxes, keeping receipts and records and now I am starting to worry...a lot. I don't know who to go to for help because this is a private thing, only a few friends know about and I didn't make so much to be going to acocuntants and all that.

I want to be straight with tax payments, I don't make loads of money to be able to pay two or three times what my tax fee if I don't pay and get caught.

Any suggestion on what I might do?

I don't know your personal/financial situation and your state laws and such concerning taxes, but I don't think you need to worry too much. Just go in and ask your fellow dancers, managers, whoever would know.

There should be plenty of people willing to help you.

Just be calm and you'll be fine, girl!

I'm not trying to burst your bubble but please think 2x about trying to dance if you are a college athlete! That is one can of worms you don't want opened...trust me.

Well, if you've made bank deposits, you can always use that as a way of estimating how much you made. If you have a time clock in the club and the IRS (in the off chance that they audit you) looks at that...and then compares that to your earnings, then I don't think that you have a lot to worry about. It's not like you are claiming that you earned $15,000 a year working full time as a dancer. Working a few nights a week here and there wouldn't put up any red flags.

Don't worry about it too much. But, for this year, make sure that you really keep track of what you earn from, and spend for, dancing.

Also, Isolde, keep in mind that as a student your reported dancing income may also factor in ...

    - regarding your eligibility for student grant money, which is based on total family income both your parents' income and your own income

    - regarding your ability to be claimed as a dependent on your parents' tax return, which is based on you providing less than 50% of your own total support

again, as Scorp points out, if you are only earning a few hundred bucks here and there by dancing, your own income is not going to be much of a factor. However, if your income starts to approach say $600-800-1000 average per week = $30k-40k-50k per year, then there could be some serious issues with your grant eligibility as well as your dependent status. In any case your parents are going to have to be told of your dancing income, because it must be included on the student grant applications which they must fill out and sign.

also, as Cinnamon points out, many colleges look upon exotic dancers as little more than the thieving, drug addicted whores that the Hollywood Stereotype prortrays. If it were to get back to college coaches and/or administration that you are an exotic dancer, they could very well decide that continuing to allow you to represent the 'good name' of their college as a member of a college's athletic team is a negative publicity risk that the college is not willing to take. Of course, some girls have managed to parlay retaliation by authorities into a Playboy/Penthouse appearance, too !

I remember reading about a woman who lost an athletic scholarship because she was dancing.

Now of course, if it is basketball or baseball or football then the "character clauses" would be looked over anyhow.

It was actually a non-scholarship cross-country runner from Cal State-Fullerton.

The ironic part was that it was members of the CSF baseball team (who had athletic scholarships and just happen to give the school notoriety by making frequent trips to the College World Series) going to her club who outed her.

Looked over, or overlooked? When you're in the running for the Heisman, stealing from Dillards or dragging your girlfriend down three flights of stairs means nothing.
